Well winners get rewarded in companies all over the world every hour of the day. I own an business and I reward people that have been in this business for a long time and I allow them to be sales leaders. Nagy has done it all in his coaching years, so he is well rounded and MY choice for the colts, Agree to disagree brother

So your sales leaders would be coordinators in the football world.  Would you think a sales leader with one year experience could do what you do?

Also, I never said anything about not rewarding people/winners so I am not sure what your point is on that issue.

well the tree would branch out as new coordinators are promoted.  in the example I used above, both Mike Shanahan and Andy Reid came from the Bill Walsh tree.  But now, you'll hear about guys like Doug Pederson and potentially Matt Nagy as being under Andy Reid's tree, but since Reid is under Walsh's tree both Pederson and Nagy would also be considered under Walsh's tree.  So it just depends on how high up the tree you want to go.

To your specific example, no I wouldn't consider Jim Johnson under Reid's tree because Reid is an offensive minded coach and Johnson was a DC.  If Johnson had previously worked under a defensive minded HC and that's who he learned his defensive philosophy from, then that's who's "tree" Johnson would fall under, imo.

TL:DR version...imo the tree will be all offensive minded coaches or all defensive minded coaches.  I wouldn't consider any defensive guy to be under an offensive minded coache's "tree" nor vice versa.

So you would not consider McDaniels being under the BB tree?

He has played and coached since 2002! Is this discussion about splitting hairs or discussing who we like??

It is not splitting hairs when discussing leadership positions.  Usually the more experience that you have actually leading a unit, then you understand what it takes from a leadership and organization stand point to run a unit and could make the jump to a team.  If you do not have that much experience, then you might not have fully developed those skills yet.  Same thing with any other job.  Most businesses don't hire CEOs who have only been Directors for one year.

i was with you until the paid his dues part.  If he's "paid his dues and deserves a head coaching job" then so has every single coordinator in the league :)

IMO, when looking at "coaching tree" you're looking for similarities in the schemes that are run.  So when someone says that Mike Shanahan and Andy Reid both come from the Bill Walsh tree, that means Shanahan and Reid are going to run a similar style of WC offense that Walsh created.

That's why Superman said he considers Ron Rivera more under the Lovie Smith tree...both run similar styles of the Cover 2 4-3 defense.

So what about defensive coaches?  Ron's Cover 2 also has ripples of Jim Johnson's defense.  Jim worked under Andy in Philly.  So would you and Superman consider Jim to have his own tree which includes McDermott and Spags and maybe Ron or would that still fall under Reid?

I'm catching flack because many look through blue-tinted glasses.

I certainly want the Colts to hire the best coach available that will mesh with our new GM.  I'm simply pointing out that Luck's uncertain status might give some candidates pause.  I don't doubt for a minute that good candidates want to come here.  Just maybe not all candidates.

No you are catching flack because you compared the Colts to the Browns which has been the worst franchise in the NFL for almost two decades running.  The Browns are an incompentent organization that is ran by an owner with a quick hook and changes his mind like his underwear.  The Colts have a much deeper tradition, an owner willing to give HC and GM more time (look how much time Pagano and Grigson got).  The Colts also possess Luck which Cleveland does not and even with the questions, I am taking Luck over an unproven high draft pick.  I know what Luck can do but have no idea what one of those picks can do.

I couldn't agree more. But have the Colts been rumored to even interview him? Ballard probably is going to hire his buddy from KC Toub. It because he knows him but he'll get to know these other candidates as well to isn't that what the interview is for come'on Ballard. I just think hiring a special teams coach with no head coaching experience is a big mistake I don't care if he and Ballard were roomies.

You are making huge assumptions into Toub.  He isn't being considered just because he knows Ballard.  He has had several interviews that are not connected to Ballard.  He is well respected in the game and several well respected individuals in the game think that he is ready including Andy Reid.  You can find fault in all of these candidates.  Most of the coaches with HC experience have bad experience so have they learned?  To disregard Toub just because he is a ST coach and probably the best in the league at it would be folly. IMHO

Not a bad article. Question is, has that fact finding mission made him ready for the next HC job

No idea, but he has seemingly taken the proper steps and at least shown a willingness to humble himself and try to evolve.  I would be happy with this hire as I think he does have tremendous potential but I also like Toub for similar reasons.  I would be happy with either one.

The '07 Pats offense should make McDaniels such an easy sell to a fanbase, but for whatever reason, everyone wants to focus on his 1.5 year stint in Denver, when he was 32 years old, had Kyle Orton/Jay Cutler as his QBs, & was clearly in over his head with the combination of HC & GM duties.

It was very evident that he was over his head as it progressed.  His attitude at the time was very off putting to veteran players.  However, I think that he truly has learned from that experience and I would be very happy with him although my number 1 is still Toub.  I just think he will be great.

The only reason I would hedge on someone like Nagy or Wilkes or Vrabel is that they haven't been in leadership positions for very long. Meaning things like game management, staff hiring, overall strategy, etc are things that they are inexperienced with, the things that Pagano struggled with. If you haven't been DC or OC or HC for very long, sometimes those are the skills you lack. For me, one of those guys either better knock it out of the park or, like McVay in LA, be able to hire some experienced coordinators to surround themselves.

Of the candidates we are linked with so far, slowly warming to the idea of McDaniels (very slowly). Of the one's not linked with us, Frank Reich looks like our kind of guy and as much as I hate to say it, Schwartz from Philadelphia as well. Should be an interesting next couple of weeks!

That is why I like Toub so much as he has been in a leadership position on a football team for years.  He is respected by players and coaches alike.  I just have a feeling about him which could totally turn out badly but I just think he will be a very good HC.

John Harbaugh also was the coach for the Eagles Defensive back too. Toubs only did special teams and that it. That all he is known for nothing else. John Harbaugh also had the best defense in the league and defensive capt Ray Rewis which made his job pretty easy.

BB has had the arguably the best QB ever, you want to downgrade his accomplishments as well?  Also, he didn't primarily coach the secondary as his primary coaching responsibility was special teams.  Toub helped with the defensive line during the same time frame.

    It's the KC connection lol

Not in the slightest.  For several years, Toub has been atop the HC candidate list.  He is well respected in the league and has worked with Ballard the longest going back to Chicago.  He is probably the best special teams coach in the league.  He has worked under Andy Reid twice and Lovie Smith.  Reid's tree is established as a really good one to pick coaches from so Toub is a very exciting prospect as a coach.

That's literally mine. Was gonna post it then ya beat me to the punch haha.

But yeah I like guys who are very well respected in the league. Gives me confidence that they can build a strong staff around them too. I don't know if any of the other names are more respected than the 3 you named.

I have more of a 1A and 1B with the first two names but right there with both of you.

I don't quite understand the people who are bent out of shape over McDaniels being a Patriot coach - the Patriot connection.  Coaches are identified with the teams they serve as a head coach for, not the teams they were an assistant for.  If he comes here and succeeds, he'll be a Colt.  Belichick spent a decade as an assistant with the Giants.  No one views him as a Giant.  Bill Walsh spent nearly a decade with the Bengals.  No one views him as a Bengal.

Also, for people expecting McDaniels to come here and run a carbon copy of everything they did in New England, that's generally not how things work.  When a long time assistant gets his own job, he wants to be his own man.  He wants to make his own mark, do his own thing and try new things.

I don't get it either.  If Ballard thinks he fits best, then do not let the NE connection stand in the way.  I do have a little more concern over him just based off of the past NE assistants not really doing well as HCs as opposed to the Andy Reid tree which has had more success (Pederson, Harbaugh, Childress (for a time), Sean McDermott, Ron Rivera, etc.) but every candidate is different.  He could be much better this time around.  I think that McD will run the same offense but yes he will put his own signature on it.

The more and more people say Toub the more and more i do not like it. That all he has been was special team coach nothing else

But he is probably the best special teams coach in the game.  He is well respected in the league.  John Harbaugh was only a special teams coach as well.  I've seen a multitude of hot shot coordinators and college coaches fail as well.  If he interviews the best and you feel that he could lead your team then hire him.
