don't know of a name, but some team may be able to part with  one if they can  move up in the draft for a skill player. that is how we got davis and it may work for us again. I want players who can help us next season not down the road. draft picks are fine if we have a current starter who is getting old like mathis, we can bring the pick along slow

I can think of a couple of names.  Dallas: Zack Martin or Travis Frederick or La'el Collins.  Dallas going for a QB. Cleveland: Cameron Irving and also going for a QB.   All of these players are young starters on the OL ad both teams could be in the market for a QB at 18.  Long shots I know but you can never underestimate what these teams might do to get a player they really want.

As far as interior lineman goes I think Whitehair is the prize I think he is going in the first just the more I watch him the more I am impressed

I agree.  I think Whitehair is the prize. In all the film I have watched of him the thing that impresses me the most is he never stops until the whistle blows. Blocking, Secondary downfield blocking, pass protection.  He is tough and relentless.

Why take the best Guard in the draft and put him at C?

I have read numerous reports on him that he has played every position on the OL.  More than one categorize his pro position as G or C.  It sounds like he can play anywhere and his versatility would be a huge plus.

  4. For the most part I think GM's draft BPA in position of need not just BPA.  The only teams that might not are teams who have very strong playoff teams without glaring needs and who could take BPA regardless.  And even then they could still go need.  We did it last year and took Dorsett because we thought we had a SB team after FA.  Carolina could do it this year but now they lost Norman so now they have a need.  It will be interesting to see what they do.  This years draft is supposed to be filled with highly ranked DL.  Using BPA there should be a boatload taken in the 1st. round this year.   But I think teams will try to fill a need and take BPA in position of need.   Two teams just traded up to take QB's who were not BPA  but players they needed and are BPA for their position.   I don't think Grigson will just take BPA. This is a new year.   He has some glaring needs now and he will use his draft position to fill them.  We don't know where he has Spence or Kelly or Ragland or Whitehair on his board but I think it's reasonable to assume we are not just going BPA  and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

I know all of that. My point wasn't that it doesn't happen. My point was that you shouldn't count on late round small school guys to address areas of need. Evidence says a guy like Ochi isn't likely to become a star. Remember: Rules and exceptions to the rule.

I wouldn't be a fan of passing on a prospect like Calhoun to draft Kelly and then hoping a guy from Stony Brook can help your pass rush.

Calhoun would be a decent pick in the second round but not great, especially if Kelly was there which he probably won't be. .  Kelly would start day one and would be a fixture on our line for a decade.  Calhoun would be a situational pass rusher at best day one and a long shot to start down the road.  Our 1st. and 2nd. rounders should be starting caliber players.

  6. Grigson just said he "needs" to hit this draft out of the park.  He "needs" to show Irsay he is serious about protecting our most important player.  He knows he "needs" to fix he OL.  I think he is toast if he doesn't.  No more taking chances on 3rd. and 4th. rounders hoping they can do the job.  He can no longer take the risk.   He needs OL starters now.  Those kind of players are found in the first two rounds.  I think he will draft for the Ol in the first round maybe even second round as well.

  7. The more I read about our upcoming draft from all the various sources and sites and the more I see of him on film the more I think our 1st pick is going to be Cody Whitehair.  He seems so versatile and is so highly rated that I can see him being high on our board where he also fits a huge need.  I think Grigson has to hit on this draft and I think this would also be a safe pick for us.

I was reading comments from Irsay saying ideally they would like to take a center that could play guard and tackle if asked to.  That almost screams Seumalo to me.

That comment from Irsay also screams Cody Whitehair.  I have seen him projected to play C. as well as guard.  He has excelled at playing T in college and if you are looking for a very versatile player Whitehair fits the bill.  I think G is probably his position but seeing him projected as a C intrigues me.

I do too. but it is hard to get draft picks who can come in and start. I would prefer they trade picks for a proven young player who is not a project like a lot of drafted players are.i want us to win this year not wait for a project to develop. we traded a pick for davis and it worked. why cant we do it on the o-line?

I believe your suggestion is a real possibility and I have mentioned it as well in other posts.  If a team wants to trade up to take a QB or back into the 1st. for a QB then we should be looking at their OL players for a quality young player that fits our needs as part of the trade.  I used Dallas as an example with Fredericks or Martin or Collins as candidates.   I think we should explore those kind of scenarios with any team that might call.

  10. If you have a chance to watch ESPN's NFL live today you should do it.  There is a segment at the end of the show when they talk about the Colts off season workouts starting today and they focus on the OL with Woody and Schlerich.  They have a lot of fun showing our Ol getting beat with three rushing our five and pretty much mock us out for having no talent.  They show Harrison, I believe, getting bull rushed by one guy putting him on his back quickly.  They show a number of clips that are pretty bad.  Hard to watch and then listen to their comments.  They have a lot of laughs at our lines expense.  For Luck's sake and our teams success I hope they fix it next week.

I wouldn't be against trading our round 4 and round 5 pick to someone near the end of the third round to take him (If, he was still there at the end of round 3) similar to what Grigson did to get TY Hilton.  Here's some excerpts of scouting info on him-

    ****************************************************************************************************

Played well with his hands, working down the LOS to make plays. Demonstrated an arm over on several plays to beat blocks for TFL. From the 4/4i alignment he gave away his slant as his gap foot was always back.

Strong Points: 1. Length. 2. Versatility in his position 3. Kick blocking 4. Energy 5. Character 6.Pass rush
Weak points: 1. Arm over 2. Level competition 3. Stance give away

This kid reminds me of former Oakland Raider Ted Hendricks, aka “The Mad Stork”. Long and lanky who could be a disruptive force both on defense and special teams. He played from a 2 & 3 point stance as a defensive end and OLB. Was comfortable in zone drops from an up position, Could play in a 4-3 scheme or a 3-4, the hybrid type of player.

    ***************************************************************************************************

I would make sure he is on Special Teams right away, and see how he progresses (playbook / practice) for game play.

I believe Hendricks was a star for the Colts before going to the Raiders.

  12. Nice analysis.  I too think Dallas might try to trade back into the first round to try and get a QB.  If they called us I would be inclined to try and get one of their young starting Ol as part of the trade.  Possibly targeting Frederick, Martin or maybe Collins who they signed last year.  I know it's a long shot but if Jerry Jones really wants that QB he might be tempted.  Collins turned out to be a great pick for them and really turned out to be a luxury pick which might make the trade more palatable.  We get an instant proven starter and they get their QB for the future.  If he called us I would definitely make it part of the conversation.

  13. I don't like Joseph as our 1st. pick.  I want a starter with our 1st pick not somebody who can't step in right away.  I would be okay with him in the 3rd. , I know he won't be there.  I would be surprised if Kelly, Martin and Whitehair are there for us in the 2nd. round.  We need to take one of them in the 1st.  I have seen them all taken around our pick on some mocks. Now if we could send a conditional 2017 pick to the 49"ers. for Davis then I think we could take our chances and wait until the 2nd. for a center and thus freeing up our 1st for possibly a defensive STARTER, maybe a NT or LB.  Even if we were able to trade for Davis I could still see them taking a C with the first pick.  I think Irsay has told them, fix that IOL or else.
