They could have brought him in for a visit and took their time with him if they wanted, and if it was really that important to them, they would have. I'm sure competing offers influenced their decision to move forward, but it was still their decision.

    Exactly!

I wouldn't question his toughness based on those minor incidents. Happens all the time. A Hamstring ends a lot of combine days early. And the issue at the pro day was said to be food poisoning.

And Georgia like is LB central. They get really creative with their LB's there. They move a ton of guys around. I'm not even sure they have a true base set in their D. Floyd got moved around more than anyone because of his special skill set. He's fast enough to be left in man or zone coverage. But he's also quick and instinctive enough to be lined up in the middle. And his length and motor make him a force outside.

And yes, Mathis is the exception to the rule, not the rule. That's why we should like Floyd. Dominant pass rushers usually look like him. 6'5" with long arms, and terrific play speed. Just because he isn't 260 doesn't mean he won't be effective.

I agree, the hammy at the Combine is probably not indicative of his toughness, but following that up with food poisoning on your pro day...I don't know, it's minor in a lot of ways, but it just doesn't sit well with me...your Pro Day is a pretty big part of the process and you just quit...

You're clearly more of a fan than I am, I just do not see it.  Yeah, he has the traits and he put up the workout numbers, but he does not have the production on the field where it matters.  Maybe he was moved around because he is so athletic and versatile as you say, but I do not believe you move a 'special' pass rusher inside to cover on passing downs...makes zero sense to drop him in coverage when he is "a force outside".

If he had an issue being physical, they wouldn't have had him playing ILB at Georgia. But, people are putting too much into his size. Mathis isn't big or powerful. He wins with speed and technique. Floyd is the same. He'll probably play at 250 at the next level and he won't be asked to play the run that often. He'll cover and rush the passer , which is what he does best. Easily the most explosive edge rusher in the draft.

The guy couldn't finish his Pro Day workout due to 'stomach issues'...not exactly screaming toughness to me.  This also come after not being able to finish the Combine with a hamstring issue.  I am not impressed by Floyd anyway (at least not at 18), but after his Pro Day I definitely am not on board.  I also find it interesting that Georgia moved such an amazing pass rusher to the inside, but I don't know Georgia football all that well...just seems like if you have a guy as 'special' as Floyd you'd put him on the outside and let him eat the QB up.  One last thing, you bring up Mathis being small and not powerful, but I believe it is you that always says that is the exception, not the rule...I could totally be off on that, and I apologize if so.

Ed Reed? More like Mike Singletary playing safety.  He even has "Singletary Eyes".  If I played offense, the last thing I want to see on the other side of the LOS is "Singletary Eyes"...

LOL, definitely!  I like everything that I have watched and read on this kid.  Been following him for the last couple of seasons after seeing him tear it up on ESPN one night.  He is real similar in size to Reed and he is a playmaker like Reed, INTs, Fumbles, big hits, etc...playing next to Geathers would make a pretty nasty duo IMO!

There are several players I think are worthy of the pick, and address a team need:

Reed, Rankins, Billings, Apple, Alexander. There are another five that I think are worthy of a pick between 25-30, so if I could, I would trade back and try to get an extra third or early fourth.

If I had to make a pick there, I think I'd take Reed.

@Superman, what is your opinion on Sheldon Rankins?  He's one of my favorites, but I haven't noticed much talk about him on the forum so far.

Yeah, with last year's selection of Parry and the success of Wade Philips with the 1-gap style, I expect the league to run less 2-gap stuff in the middle in a pass happy league. 340-350 lb guys like Jamaal Williams or Vince Wilfork (don't let the website listings fool ya :)) don't grow on trees. So, focusing on lighter NTs that can disrupt might be the future of the league. The key is still having either a) the secondary to go with it or b) the pass rush to go with it to make disruption down the middle more effective.

Besides, teams like the Seahawks and Broncos recently proved that you need DL depth, not every down DL, to win consistently and survive injuries. Along those lines, stamina becomes less of an issue to me. Heck, Ware and Miller were used in tandem only 16 times in the SB and were extremely effective when that happened. DL depth, more than every down DL starters is the key and this draft is the draft to load up on DL depth, which will win come playoff time.

I like where your mind is at, I completely agree.

He is definitely saying and doing the right things. The 2015 May arrest is concerning, though. If he would be willing to continue taking random monthly (or even weekly or bi-weekly) drug tests, I wouldn't have an issue taking him in the first. I dont even know if you can do that, and I wonder if the union would take issue with it. It might be a bit of a reach at 18, but I would feel more at ease if he continued with the drug tests.

Yeah, I couldn't agree more.  I posted the links because I think there is some misinformation floating around about him, and these articles seem to give you a good look at his history, etc.  I'm not necessarily advocating for him at 18 (not completely against it either), and honestly, I would probably be all about it if he didn't have the arrest in May.  Even if it was just him throwing a glass bottle into a dumpster (and missing and shattering the glass), you shouldn't be doing those types of things when you're in his position...I get it, he's a kid, and it truly is extremely minor in the grand scheme of things, but a 1st round pick is a big investment...  The drug/Ectasy issue is definitely a major concern, although I do think some parts are being overblown by a few.  Either way, it should not be taken lightly.  If there is a positive though, he seems to have a great support network around him and is pro-active in keeping himself clean and transparent.  As much as I like him and am rooting for him to do well and prove his doubters wrong, I think we'll pass on him with all of the other talent that should be there at 18.

    Free agent additions:

Casey Hayward, CB -- five years, $40m, $15m guaranteed, 2016 cap hit of $5m, 2017 cap hit of $7m

Bruce Irvin, EDGE -- four years, $33m, $13m guaranteed, 2016 cap hit of $6.5m, 2017 cap hit of $7.75m

    Mike Harris, OG/OT -- two years, $6m, 2016 cap hit of $2.25m, 2017 cap hit of $3.75m

    Ben Jones, C/OG -- two years, $4m, 2016 cap hit of $1.5m, 2017 cap hit of $2.5m

    Draft:

1/18: Shaq Lawson, EDGE, cap hit of $1.8m; pass rusher, will play Rush backer, has power and moves and finishes well in both phases

2/48: Jason Spriggs, OT, cap hit of $900k; plus athlete, especially if groomed as a RT, has room to grow as a run blocker

3/82: Xavien Howard, CB, cap hit of $620k; nice sized boundary corner who plays physical and has footwork to play off-man coverage, with coaching can be a full time starter

4/120-ish: Karl Joseph, S, cap hit of $580k; aggressive safety, mostly SS for the Colts scheme, has range and playmaking ability, hopefully the ACL is ready in 2016

A big fan of everything you have, and really appreciate the breakdown with the numbers and everything.  I wish people would use this as a template moving forward, I think it would make everyone's mocks more enjoyable.

I do have a quick question, it has been asked in a few different threads already, but I haven't noticed you comment yet; how confident are you that Hayward can play outside?  I assume you're reasonably confident since we're signing him, but from what I read there is no consensus...I have not watched any film, so I really don't have much of an opinion, just curious on your thoughts....however, I did like him coming out of college and would like to see us bring in a CB2 in Free Agency.  Bonus question; what are your thoughts on Sean Smith?

Thanks for putting Mike Harris on my radar, I really like that addition after reading up on him.  I also like getting Jones from the Texans, he should have no problem coming in and starting as well.  Their versatility is a huge plus, and I am a big fan of strengthening these positions through FA rather than early draft picks.  I am curious as to why you only did a 2 year deal for each of them though.

Irvin would be a major upgrade for us, but I could see him getting some big money from someone...I think $8-9mil is about right though.

As for the draft, I really like Lawson for us at 18.  A nice OL like Spriggs in the 2nd would be awesome...and with what we would have in this scenario we could allow him time to develop as many say he needs to...also not against some DL guys that might be available here!  I like the Howard pick, would like to see us snag some CB talent early on in the draft (as well as getting a CB2 in FA).  Now, for my favorite pick and favorite player in the draft...Karl Joseph!  It seems like I am in the minority thinking he'll have a hard time making it out of the 2nd, but I'm no expert.  I think his ability to play the ball is underrated (man cover ability and ball skills), and he can flat light it up all over the field...he's just a play-maker...and reading up on him there seems to be nothing but positives about his character (great leader, great attitude, etc.).  I know he is coming off of the ACL injury (and he's "undersized"), but IMO he's not only the best Safety prospect (and most well-rounded), he's one of the best players in the draft.  I know I will get some strong disagreements from many, but I'm serious...I hope people have given him a real look, it's worth the time.  Here is a video of him with Deion at the Combine if you want to see a recent interview with him (nothing exciting, just a quick interview from the Combine); http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/0ap3000000639974/Joseph-I-think-I-m-the-best-football-player-in-this-draft

Sorry to get off base there, I just get excited about the thought of him and Geathers playing together.  Thanks again for the great work!

I may be a bit naive, but how can he be so young and yet he's already been addicted, has rehabbed, and has quit for 2 years?  He didn't really have time to be become addicted and caught just that 1 year in college.  That makes me think he's been "using" throughout high school.  Does anyone know the details?

Here are two different links to articles about him and his background if you're interested in some more in-depth study on him.  I believe one is from August '15 and the other October '15:

Thanks.  I thought I read where he was banned from OSU because of ecstasy as a sophomore but has been straight since then.

If the info you shared was correct, then I would not draft him and hope that the Colts do not either.  I'm interested in not gambling in the first round.  Although pass rush is the #1 priority, IMO, more certain players at DL and CB look to be available.

For what it's worth, the info regarding his positive Ecstasy results were not correct...Spence did not test positive for Ecstasy in 2015.  The alcohol incident is correct, and occurred in late May 2015.

Yeah I seen that a while ago. I don't see any way he gets 12 million per year. He's a very good corner. But he isn't an elite top 10 corner. He's a really good top 20, top 25 corner. I mean Vontae Davis got what? 35 million over 4 years??? I'm not quite sure. But it was something like that, and he was coming off a year in which he was a top 3 corner in the NFL. Maybe even the top corner that year. I mean I guess Oakland may offer 5/50, but I don't think he gets 12 million per year. If that's what he's wanting we need to look into Sean Smith and Casey Hayward. I'm pretty sure we could get Smith at 4/36 or Hayward at 4/32. These contracts are getting ridiculous. Just absolutely ridiculous.

I think you're in for a big surprise if you think that these guys (Smith/Jenkins) aren't going to be getting $10mil a year minimum.  Hayward is the only guy that might fall under that number due to him not proving he can play on the outside in the NFL.  You could absolutely be right, but it's Free Agency and we see this every time.  Vontae's contract is already a few years old, and there are 9 CBs already making $10mil+ a year.

Hayward can play outside as well.  I am not opposed to drafting a solid CB in the draft though.

Just curious, how confident are you that he can play outside?  I just feel like him getting replaced on the outside by a Rookie last year is pretty telling.  I haven't went back and watched him, so I'm just curious what your thoughts are.  I hate to pay a guy $8mil a year to be a slot CB if he doesn't work on the outside.
