Never would have thought Luck would retire. Didn’t see it coming. I get it though and don’t blame him at all. I’ve studied Herbert for a few years and (besides Trevor) he has been my favorite college QB for the past few years.

Ballard is a smart man. He has to see the inadequacies at Oregon. Number 10 is a stud, and in my opinion he is the best QB in this draft. I hope he falls far enough for Ballard to move up and get him. 5-10 is all we need. We are in striking distance.

Imagine Justin Herbert and Frank.... Look what he has done with Foles and Brissett.

     Crossing fingers.....

Seriously, answer me this, what has Reich done to elevate JB? What has JB done better since coming here from NE? Foles, maybe a better argument for but JB is still the same thing, possibly worse, than when he arrived.

From what I understand it has been reported that he wants to play for the Colts.  Usually players don't make statements like that but he apparently has.  He would certainly be a perfect fit at a PON.

That’s interesting that he says that openly. He certainly would fill a needed spot. It appears there are 3 top DT’s in the draft and I hope we get one of them. Actually after looking at the draft site reviews, there appears to be 4-5 that could really play well. If we can’t land Brown at 13, and we go for QB at that spot instead, I’d feel comfortable knowing we should be able to get a really nice piece at the top of the second round. The Alabama kid is intriguing. Comp to Booger McFarland in the review. I’d take that.

  3. When they grade, I’m not sure what their criteria is because some of these don’t make sense.

the other take away, if you buy into these numbers as quality, I don’t, RB J. Williams listed at 87 never seen the field again after 2 explosive games. And nobody in the media has really had that explored by the coaching staff.

also, the WR Johnson made some really nice contributions to the wr group and he is under 60 where Inman and 3/4 game Funchess is above?  Scratching my head here.

If you look at his numbers, Carr’s last two seasons have been excellent.   So while my asking price may be too high, I think yours is going to be much lower than will be needed.

Maybe there’s a midway point between the two?   Just not sure how much Ballard will be willing to pay?

I will throw this out there as the wrinkle in the trade. Raiders draft right before us. It’s conceivable that the Raiders draft a QB with the deal set up that we give our 2nd Rd pick, a 5th rd pick, if they want JB I’m throwing him in and maybe one of those extra 7th rounders we seem to always have.

if the Raiders guy doesn’t fall to them, whoever that may be, the deal is off and we handle our draft plan B option. It’s better that they draft ahead of us because it kind of forces their hand first imho.

  5. For you draft nutty, rabid college watching fans, what’s your take on this guy as he seems like the second rated DT for the draft currently? At 6’6” and 310 pounds, that’s a lot of height to be dominated by short stocky C/G in the nfl. What’s his strong suit in this game at DT and what’s his weak points that must be overcome? Is he just a younger version of Hunt? Would like to have our board experts weigh in here on how he would fit in here.

I really hope we either have Derrick Brown fall to 13 or trade up for him, he is one of the most impactful DT’s I’ve scouted in recent years

I do like what I’ve read on Brown and would love to have him on the team, don’t believe I see CB spending draft capital on a DT though as it seems his comments in the past says he devalues this position in the draft. Although I would love to see this kid drafted, maybe sign an Ngakoue and see if those spots resolve the back end because hopefully you are getting pressure now. Could be a winning defensive strategy but we are still stranded at the QB spot. Maybe you could land Carr in a trade idk.  Barring injuries though, those three moves would dramatically change the 2020 outlook for the colts.

We would be releasing Brissett, signing Dalton, and he'd be Mentoring Montez and Kelly behind him. That improves our starter and backup situation. Okwara will go in the 1st half of the 2nd round most likely. We have pick 44, so it's close enough.

Dalton, unless he is cheap, isn’t worth bringing in. Imho. My point towards Montez is, what’s his upside because I’ve not read good things on most any of the QB prospects going after the 2nd round, and not much on the ones who are in the second round. I also don’t think Okwara gets to the second round. Could always be runs on certain groups that allow him to fall but not from the initial reads he is first round trending. Lots of movers and shakers by April of course.

Wanted to do a different spin on a mock based on the Costanzo situation. This is what I'd do if Costanzo retired in the offseason.

Round 1.) Jedrick Willis, OT, Alabama

Round 2a.) Jalen Reagor, WR, TCU

Round 2b.) Julian Okwara, DE, Notre Dame

Round 3.) Ben Bredeson, OG, Michigan

Round 4.) Steven Montez, QB, Colorado

Round 5.) Kenny Cooper, C, Georgia Tech

Round 6a.) Harrison Bryant, TE, Florida Atlantic

Round 6b.) Khalil Davis, DT, Nebraska

Round 7.) Joshua Kelley, RB, UCLA

Let me know what you guys think below! Just to be clear, I would also sign Andy Dalton in this scenario in FA.

I think I’d be about as sad if this were the draft we get as I would knowing we signed JB to a new 5 yr deal. I really doubt Okwara with our 2nd 2nd rounder. You may be pressed to get him with the 1st 2nd rounder. What upside does Montez give you? I would t be upset getting the OT though but give me a DT with the 34th pick if you couldn’t trade down in the first for more picks.

    and please no Andy Dalton.

Carr is ok, and any upgrade to JB would be welcome.... But it's gonna take more than one case before I get excited about Carr I'm afraid.

I think this team could go far with a guy such as Carr. We don’t need a Luck/Manning guy, although it would be great, but we do need a guy that is well above the level of JB. If we had a scale of 1-10, we could label Luck a 9 and JB a 3 and Carr a 6. I’d be fine at that level while we also build up the defense too. We got the oline and a decent run game. A guy who can make the defenses concerned enough not to stack and blitz the line every snap would go a long way into improving both the run and pass game. A Carr type player can win a SB with the right team. Carr I think could have had that team just a few years ago. He is capable. JB has shown he is not capable.

Offer pick 34, eat JBs contract and trade him as Gruden's backup Qb to mentor his new Qb, and include Hooker since Gruden could be enamored with his potential splash-play ability and 5th year option.  Maybe also a mid rounder next season.

Jeez, maybe a spa package for life and a years supply of his favorite sports drink. If the Raiders are going to part with him then we can work out a deal no doubt but I don’t see us giving that 34th pick, JB, Hooker, a pick next year for a guy they are ready to move on from. Maybe Peyton will go hang out with him and ask for a favor for the colts as he has always loved Peyton too.

    Clarify nobody is available?

    Agreed!

Either can be cut with little CAP ramifications.

8th in total passing Yds and first in completion 70%.

    Carr won’t be had for a 3rd.

I’d give our 2nd rounder and Hoyer or JB (his choice) if he wanted a vet of sorts for his new QB. I like Carr and would certainly welcome him here but I’m not giving away too much for a guy that we know his ceiling. He isn’t manning but also isn’t JB. With a better protecting oline, he may fit in here to Reichs system much better than he has Grudens. Never know but lots of risks.

Carr is a 39-55 QB with not a single playoff start to his credit.  He is Jacoby Brissett, and every other .500ish (sub) QB who shows flashes, and then disappoints.  He's had the likes of Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree, Jared Cook, Waller, Jacobs, Lynch, and Murray as weapons.  The Raiders,  albeit temporarily, made him the highest paid QB when his current deal was signed.  He's had a lot of support and a lot of talent on those rosters for them to be as bad as they've been.  His fault?  Of course not.  But he's a part of exactly the same problem in Oakland as JB is here.  This discussion is akin to shuffling chairs on the Titanic.

Was it 2016 that has Carr as an MVP kind of year and had his team favored to go do big things towards a Super Bowl run until he had a freak accident against us. He is an above avg QB and he has shown more than a game or two flash, he has had a season of it and several games in between with a dysfunctional team on the west coast. This move would be way better than the shuffling of chairs.

    He won't retire.

    He's contract dancing.

That’s what I think too. He wants the colts to sweat and maybe panic a little therefore it gets him more $$$ and I don’t blame him. At the beginning of the season I didn’t think he was going to warrant a big salary but I can see him making top 5-7 tackle money now if not better. We shall see

Sheesh. Another player who could retire after a career year. When it rains it pours I guess. Hope Ballard can convince him to stay.

I honestly think with the punishment these guys take in the nfl, the amount of time it takes away from family and growing up as a parent to little kids and missing all the little things, the lingering affects it has on them and the insane amount of money they have made in the first contract for big names and then that second contract, I could see so many more Andrew Luck occurrences happening. Play to age 30 and have 50-100 million in the bank, why continue and risk permanent damage if you don’t need to? I think we will see more Lucks and less Brady’s in the future.

Personally, I think the best passing QB in the draft will be available in the 2nd or maybe even the 3rd round.  So, I think the Colts can take a DT in the first and then take the QB in the 2nd.

I think this defense really has to have a dominate DT to have any success here. I’ve posted elsewhere but I honestly believe that QB and DT are priorities 1A and 1B. Very little amount of separation in importance.  Now if AC does retire, crap, now you have 3 equally pressing priorities

  14. 30 minutes ago, Smonroe said:

As for an earlier draft pick - I'm not sure that's going to help us.  There may be as many as six teams who are QB needy drafting before us.  You know Ballard isn't going to take the 5th, 6th, or worse QB on his board to fill a need.  He'll go BPA, or trade the pick.

If CB were to pick an inferior QB left on the board with our first pick because we have to have a change, I would be furious. He won’t do that either imho. He either identifies his guy and if he thinks he has to move up to get him, that’s what he does. If he stays at 13 then we go with BPA as you indicated.

Personally, I think the Colts' coaches through the game against Jax because, as @Rackeen305 suggested, a win would have put the Colts in that 17-20 draft order a loss get them with a top 15 pick and 3 picks in the top 50.

That is the only way I can explain only running the ball 4 times in the 2nd half against the worst run defense in the league and a run defense the Colts had 113 yards in the 1st half against.

Sadly, we have abandoned the strength against weaknesses while playing teams when we were in contention that didn’t make sense so I’m not sure we ranked on purpose after the half but it’s possible. I really do think the team wanted to salvage a .500 season over a better draft pick.

There will be a thread, but about locker room continuity... AC is mulling retirement.

It also could be a tactic that AC has taken to entice the colts to cave into bigger money to keep him playing. Idk if CB was playing poker and AC is holding pocket aces, CB is either gonna have to fold and pay or call him and see.

But we’ve been made to believe, Jacoby was solid in the locker room?

When did they stop believing in Brissett?

    Week 17 or earlier?

Was it before Ebron shut it down?

I don’t think there is any rift in the locker room over JB. I think it’s totally possible to be content with getting the season over with and being fine in the locker room at the same time. I feel like the guys believed in JB up until a point in the season when he showed on film what he is. I do believe that EE was the first to kinda pull away from the belief that JB wasn’t the guy and was costing him a chance for a new big contract somewhere. That’s not a revolt though. With TY stating his point of view for getting more touches, I also don’t think that’s a slam to JB, it’s just a fact for him, he wants more looks. TY has shown disappointment with his season on multiple occasions this year so nothing new there. A star of the team putting up 500 yards is pretty ugly.

pretty sure they're the standard league dates, so mid march and then June/July

we don't have a top 12 pick.  We pick at 13...

If it’s March that a bonus is due, the team is either going to have to pay him and just eat it to hide their intentions or cut bait and expose likelihood of drafting a new guy. I will have to go search for the article that explained his payment structures for his 2 yr contract.

We also need a second cover safety, Geathers is awful in coverage and a better corner to replace Desir it’s not just only on the defensive line.

While we are pointing out blame in covering, Hooker has looked like a hot piece of dog feces lately. Not sure what’s up with him. Is he hurt, lack of caring or the scheme is not allowing him to showcase his skill set. Something isn’t right with Hooker for sure.

our strong suit is our lb’ers now, and even then, it’s not like they are the dominant group in the league. Eberflus has to add more wrinkles into this defense than it’s vanilla shell we so frequently are seeing.  I do recall an article early in the year that quoted a few other “anonymous” GM’s  that said planning or playing against our defense was the most simplistic defense of the league. Or something like that. Eberflus either isn’t that creative or CB has him cornered down to certain parameters. Idk something must change next season for sure. Maybe with Turay and Houston on the field together and a better DT, the back end looks better. I’d just like to see more creative packaging from Eberflus than we’ve seen so far. Look at the Dallas team he was a part of, they have some wrinkles in their defense.

agreed. besides, if I remember right, it was only a 2 year extension and was heavily front loaded. We can get out of it and have the cash to spare. My guess, we'll hold him thru Training Camp at the very least , regardless of what happens in the offseason

Agree that he will likely be here through at least TC but he has some bonus money that’s due at some point and I can’t recall when those dates are.

Chad Kelly: best inactive QB in the league.

Chad is legendary!!! He is still 10X better than what we are getting out of JB. My hopes are these:

    1. We draft a legit QB with 1st pick

    2. we get a legit QB via FA

    3. Kelly gets a real chance to compete next season and see what he has with the #1’s

    4. Hoyer is asked to clear his locker immediately. In fact, here is your box of crap, we cleaned it out for you. JB’s box is on standby pending the new competition.
    5. regardless of the new route to a QB next season, JB is not at the given helm. If he somehow earns the right by showing a drastic and dramatic turn of events in his play, then we are probably in trouble because someone can’t evaluate very well.

  20. Perhaps if the guys on the team who matter speak to coach and to CB enough, the JB experiment will be done. I honestly believe they will have a new QB come start of the 2020 season anyways, they will just keep the position top secret. May in fact be why JB kept the starting spot at the last two games, in order to conceal to others their true intentions. Keep saying and acting as though JB is their guy and then at first chance for an upgrade, either FA or draft, they pull that trigger.

JB May in fact stay on as a back up guy, idk,  but he in no way can be the given starter. When is JB’s bonus money due? Will it be before or after the draft? Will it be before or after the FA period starts?

Defense has been bad! Spent most of the draft on that side of the ball and it took a step back. The scheme sucks. We gave up big plays everywhere. Down the sideline, middle of the field, we never cover the back out the backfield. Blitzes were obvious and didn’t hit home often enough. A bunch of issues.

Either there is a disconnect with what is being taught or Eberflus is getting out coached. I know wasn’t a Reich guy. We made a lot of average QBs look great.

I certainly think it’s a fair question to evaluate the entire coaching crew. Eberflus hasn’t wowed me at all though.

Doubtful, so trade up, if you have to.  If have no QB, you have nothing.  Can't go bargain shopping at the QB position.

As much of a concern as I have for the QB spot, I worry equally as much for the defensive crew, including do we have the right DC?
