Tannehill made two huge throws. The bomb for the TD and the dime to jonu for the other td. You think JB makes those throws?

    14 minutes ago, BleedBlue4Shoe86 said:

I do. JB made that same bomb type throw to Marcus Johnson in Tampa. Also the Smith throw was a great play by Smith. Kinda like that catch by Enron earlier in the year.

I was going to point out the same game. Every QB has moments where they look like Montana and then there are moments where they look like Jamarcus Russel or imploded Ryan leaf.

I will accept a QB who throws a couple really nice hits downfield for those chunk plays (TD’s are bonus) along with the continual safe check downs and smart plays with a RB who has the ability to run over people or flat out make them miss. To make it all work for a playoff run and opportunity at the SB prize, this make up has to have a defense that can shut down the other side though. Without a defense like that, game managers flat out will not work. JB is not a guy who will win games for you nor is he a smart game manager. He just isn’t that avg imho.

This is still the craziest thing I have heard.  Played well?  Against who?  Third stringers that are bagging groceries.

Don't get me wrong.  I am all for him still being on the roster and I actually really like him as the backup next year (can't stand Hoyer).  But to say he is currently better than JB is just crazy talk.will ferrell crazy pills GIF

I don’t think it’s crazy talk at all. Until we get to see CK and JB play apples to apples games in the PS, CK out performed the potential that JB has proceeded to this day. CK May get out there and display mad skills of a Curtis Painter or he could display the hidden gem that a Brady held behind Bledsoe, nobody on here knows because the team didn’t allow it to show. But I’ll tell you this much, they held onto his 53 man spot during the season when they needed another healthy player and dumped Cain, who they gushed over in PS camp, as did reporters and fans alike, for a reason imho. They have to like the potential we seen from those PS games he played in, the fact he stayed clean all year and have t heard a peep of negative press all year long about him and the fact he showed high level potential out of college to boot. It was simply his head and off field antics that looked him. McAfee swam in the canal drunk and was an * and turned out as a pro bowler because he kept his nose clean after that stupid event about killed his career. Another chance and risking millions turned him around. CK May be the same thing.

Kelly will more than be the odd man out next year the same he would have been this year had AL not retired

Not only do I see CK here next season, but given a true opportunity to win the position, I see him as our starter unless they land a QB via 1/2 round pick.

Not sure Tua will ever be back to his pre injury form

That hip and his many other college injuries already have me nervous as heck that Tua lasts in any season in the NFL. He may have many great qualities but durability has not proven to be one of them so far in any season he’s played. Not good going into a franchise roll spot imho.

Hoyer is under contract for two more years

Hoyer is 100% cuttable. Hoyer was brought here as an emergency stop gap. CB panicked with him imho by thinking JB needed that teammate mentor and peer who could hang out with and just talk X/O’s 24/7. Overpaid by a ton just to feed JB football related experience. His experience and assistance to JB this year simply doesn’t justify keeping him over  keeping another kid. Coaching from Reich and an actual QB coach should be enough.

Fascinating, isn't it? But if QB1 had lit it up, and QB2 showed he could hold the fort for a couple of games, QB3 would be forgotten.

Hoyer hasn’t proven to be worth being kept for any one of the three spots imho.

as for my rational to say CK will be our opening day starter, which is my prediction given three factors of 1. We don’t draft rd 1-2 QB, 2. We don’t get a starter via FA or trade and 3. He gets an actual chance to compete for the spot. My rational is starter 1 currently isn’t good and starter 2 (Hoyer) is worse than the current starter and CK has just as much potential as any college QB prospect not named Tua or Burrow. Those factors alone give me the idea that CK will open as day one starter over JB.

come back and crucify me if I’m wrong in September but this is my super bold 2020 team prediction

If that highly rated QB prospect is drafted, developed and possibly red shirted, and they roll with JB as the starter in 2020, it makes sense to let Chad Kelly come in the first sign of JB not getting the job done, assuming the rookie is not ready. That will help them evaluate if they want to retain JB as the backup or Kelly in 2021 since obviously, the 2020 rookie will be starting in 2021 and I do not see them paying $15 mil. for JB again.

If Chad Kelly doesn’t get an open chance to compete against JB in camp and preseason, I will be furious at this team. Now, whether CK is good enough to beat out JB in camp and PS is the question that will left up to CB and FR but if it’s not an open competition to see who wins, it’s a dereliction of duty imho.

as for drafting a guy in the later rounds as a potential plan to  hedge against JB sucking again and to develop, you can’t tell me that CK doesn’t offer as much potential as a guy we could draft in round 4 or later.  If we don’t take a QB with our first round pick or maybe even with the second rd pick, we have to believe that either the guy we could have taken at those positions are not as good of a pick as using JB and CK for the 2020 year. I just want to see CK get a legit shot at showing he is good, great or below avg talents in live fire against #1’s.

Did Banogu look like he was progressing as the season went on or the opposite?

I’d like to see the wr routes as well. Are they open, wide open and JB isn’t looking at them or are they just running bad routes and not getting open often enough.

I have always been a fan of Alex Smith. I would take him over Brissett any day. I would take Smith and draft a QB and clean house of what we have now.  Smith is mobile, smart, and he wins.  His first few years were rough but once a little more talent got around him he did great.  He should have never been benched in SF.

I’m not what he is now at this stage of his career but the last time I seen him playing in KC, he was an adequate game manager, not carrying the team by hisself and that’s solid enough. Makes good decisions and is mobile enough (the injury and daddy time has probably slowed him a bit).  I’d roll the dice if he were healthy. He will know this offense mostly. He would fill a stop gap imho.

Let’s be honest...  Alex Smith is one of the most unpopular players in the history of this website.   He is hated here.

You are dead wrong here, McDaniels is easily the most hated guy in the history of this website, followed by Tom Brady then Rivers and then most of the 2000’s group of New England Patriot players.

Alex is pretty far down the list of most hated here. Lol

I’m all for Ruggs but, only if we draft a guy like Easen in the second.  Jacoby can’t throw the ball.  If we aren’t drafting a QB That can start day 1 a WR means nothing because Jacoby will miss him when he’s open or overthrow him when he’s open.  Take a stud DT or something because playing solid defense is how we’re gonna win games if Jacoby moves forward as our quarterback.

I feel the same way. Our DT spot is 1B on the list of problem areas of the team. If you can’t fix the QB day 1, best to fix the DT spot and make plans for your next QB because we all pretty much feel JB has hit his ceiling and it’s a 6 foot ceiling. We need those high 10 foot ceilings again.

Well Tom Brady could be leaving the Pats this year.

Scary thought.  Belichick lets Tom walk, tells Kraft to let him tank one year, puts some crappy backup in there, purposefully makes poor gametime decisions, secures himself the #1 overall pick, gets Lawrence and wins 6 to 8 more Superbowls.

    Ok I'm scared now.

If the Pats trade for JB, we know the plan is to tank hard lol.

I think Gordon would beat on Brissett pretty quickly.

Based on what we seen from JB this season and what little we seen from Kelly, I honestly think given the honest chance, Kelly will beat out JB this upcoming year. I wouldn’t be against looking at a Gordon type guy (have no idea who he is) just to keep the competition steady.

If Brown is available at #13, you take that DT, if not and you’re set on DT, trade down a little and pick up another pick and get Kinlaw. Certainly we can get better value with #14 than Ruggs III. This defense has got to have production from the DT to be successful. If we aren’t going for a QB at #13, we better fix that DT spot.

I think the only way the Colts would pick a QB at 13 is if Tua fell that far.  Otherwise, I expect the Colts to pick a DT or WR and then pick a WR at 34.  Because I don't think any other QB is worth 13.  I would shoot from Fromm or Eason at #34.  I would avoid Love at all costs.

I don’t think many here have Fromm as a successful QB in the NFL on this board. He has some concerns for sure. I wouldn’t be taking From until 3rd or later. Eason sounds like he has upside so I’d take a look at him at 34 or possibly our next pick in the second. Take the DT and the WR combo from both picks or we again may be forced into taking the left tackle depending on what AC does this off season.

Personally, I’d rather see the Colts go with P. Rivers on a 2 year deal. Draft a replacement who sits, cut JB and save some draft collateral.

Rivers is a “bridge QB” with the ability to get the Colts to the playoffs in 2020 and the future still progressing forward nicely.

Folks want to bash Rivers, but playing behind a bad O-Line he still managed to average 288yds a game. I see know reason he couldn’t come close in Indy.

And it makes everyone else better. No?

I’m no fan at all of the current version of Rivers and think he would be more harmful than helpful in the long run. Is he better than having JB, certainly but I’m not sure who isn’t at this point. I’d almost rather look at Brady if I’m taking on an older QB to mentor my next in line guy. And I can’t stand the thought of Tom Brady in a Colts uniform. Eli would also be ahead of Rivers. If I’m running things, I’d certainly have my eye on the possibility of getting Carr as I think he matches this offense, but I’m not giving up the farm to do it. Our 2nd and a 4th at most. Then I take the best DT in the first and BPA with #34.

The trade was for Kelvin Sheppard...a slow ILB.

It was a bad trade at the time...that looked awful in hindsight. That 2013 offseason has to be up there with worst  of all time. Yet the Colts still went to the Divisional round that year.

It was a trade that both players were going to be moved from their team. The trade just swapped players and each was looked at to fit in better on the new team in a new scheme, one that suited their strengths. It worked out for Buffalo for sure but he would not have had that success in our 3-4 scheme. JH was either gonna get traded as he did or cut from our team. We swapped to take a look at another younger guy who maybe fit in better here. He didn’t. Neither did Grigson as it planned out.

That was a spot on article. I absolutely think his opportunity is with us. This may have simply been a test for him this season and a tremendous restraint on Reich and CB to put him under center even though things looked dire when JB was out and floundering so badly down the stretch. Maybe this was the mental test CB needed to see, can the kid stay mentally focused on the sidelines watching this team, knowing he could be of help but wasn’t asked to. Maybe see how he responds up to the draft time with a plan of if he stays positive and out of trouble during that time, he gets the chance. We know this kid has every bit of talent that these kids coming out this season has, at least the ones that may fall to us at 13. I’m high high on the kid from what we’ve seen. He is just risky in the behavior part. Stay clean and positive and he is a rich kid as a starter. At least the opportunity to be a starter.

My thing has always been with Chad Kelly is, if any other team even thought he could help them out and he be good why haven't they took a chance on him? The way some people post in here, they think he is good and better than JB so am I missing something? I get he has been in trouble with the law but still not 1 other team has took a chance on him. Strange. On top of that, we won't even play him.

His baggage was 100% his reason for not getting snatched up. His connection to FR and Jim Kelly is the reason the Colts brought him in. The reason he didn’t get snatched up on the first cut was because of the baggage. The reason he didn’t get taken off our PS during the season meant another team had to put him on the 53 man roster for 4 games (paid for 4 anyways) and again, the risk was from his baggage. The Colts brought him up and kept him up while having zero intention of using him it appears and that to me is an indication that some team wanted to sign him while he was on the PS (and don’t forget he was highly paid as a PS player), the team didn’t release him while they needed spots because of other injuries but kept him without ever dressing him. That again indicates to me the team had a fear they would lose him if they left him exposed.

I honestly believe this team has a solid degree of interest in letting him compete for a starters spot this next season. If they do not get a QB at 13 and one of those top 3 QB’s don’t land in their lap somehow or a FA guy like Carr doesn’t make it here, I honestly believe it’s an open spot between JB and CK. This team feels he has that type of talent or they wouldn’t have saved his spot for anyone’s uncle.

I may be in the minority here but aside from a first round trade up for the QB or a trade for a Carr type guy, I honestly think CK is poised to take over this team if he stays clean this offseason. It will have shown he is capable of maturing after being stupid and wreck less as an entitled young man. Imho

So Ballard gets a top 10 rookie in Okereke, two first round quality guys (through year 1) in Willis and Tell, and a top 50 rookie in Rock-Ya-Sin? All without a 1st rounder? Looks like another solid draft class with a one year sample size. Ballard does it again!

Oh, and we also got the Redskins 2nd round pick which turned out to be pick 34 in the draft!

    Great perspective. Good post!

There have been some comments talking about how a cornerback should be on Ballard's draft board.  I won't say that he won't draft one mid to late in an obvious BPA situation, but the corners we have need more experience together with a better pass rush.

I doubt that any corners or LBs will be added this offseason.

I’ll agree with that. If your front end is bad, Deon Sanders X2 and 2 of the best safeties aren’t going to be as successful as they have always looked. We need pressure and penetration, not new corners. Could we upgrade back there? Always but pressure makes all levels better.

  19. 19 minutes ago, DougDew said:

I've thought the secondary needs growth more than replacing.

A pass rush will make these guys look like all pro’s. Things like time, communication, better scheming, and definitely better pass rushing from the line, will make the back end complete. These kids aren’t bad at all, they do need to get the qb’s scrambling instead of sitting in the pocket surveying the field. Lb’ers are set and we have decent depth too. Get me a DT that can push back the pocket and force the QB to move and we could see that old Tampa bay dominant style. Turay is also gonna help things but need more from Banagu.

You are overly optimistic ... they may stop the bleeding on season ticket holders, but they won't be picking up many either.  Single game sales will be down as well. I usually go to ~3 games a year; I might go to 1 if JB is QB and I have talked to others of thinking similarly.

We dropped our ST’s two seasons ago and didn’t miss it. So glad I didn’t have them for this season, kinda missed them a little bit in the 2018 season. Doubt we ever own ST again, just too expensive for the 10 events we would attend.

The more I read about Ballard and the more I listen to Colts podcast, the more I believe that Ballard will got get some offensive weapons in the draft, build around JB on offense. But more importantly I believe that he will continue to build the whole team around the defense. Everyone says the defense is his baby and he wants to have a top 5 defense. I truly believe that is his goal.

looking at defense there are players to like.
    Need DT

    Turay

    Okereke

    Houston

    Leonard

    Walker

    Moore

    Rock

    Hooker

    Khari

Monster defense with an average to above average game manager at QB. You can win in the league that way. Not sexy and not the way we have done it before, but could be great. Ballard is all about the 22 not 1 player. Can’t wait to see what he does this offseason.

    Thoughts?

So I am in the camp of obtain your DT to really complete the defensive plan. I don’t care where we get the pieces to fix the team, whether it be draft or FA or is there a player on the team that was injured that can come back to make that difference. My feeling is that player isn’t anywhere on the team and what FA DT stud will be available? I think you get it in the draft, 1st pick.

so to stay with the theme of all 22 guys, you definitely have to have just a bit more emphasis on the QB position.  It can be a game manager but it has to be a competent starter. JB has not fit that bill to date, he is way to erratic and blind to 3/4 of the field. I’ll take a QB who only throws 6-10 yards all day but has an ability to find his open receivers and find them quickly and decisively. JB doesn’t do that either. Every QB has the ability to chuck a ball downfield 20+ yards and on occasion hit it to loosen up a defense a bit and that’s fine with me. Having Manning again to hit those type of plays often would be great however, I don’t see is getting that guy again soon.

you say draft a guy in round one to be your future do you? What if that guy has many holes in his game and has potential but hasn’t been able to display it fully yet? Doesn’t the guy we have as a bench guy now have those same designations for his career? Kelly has many of the traits as the guys coming out that are first round risks. Why would a team draft another guy with such risk when you’ve already got that risk on the team to try and develop? He showed everything you wanted in camp and preseason, why not develop it? Is the team so stubborn they have ignored how badly JB played and how well Kelly played in his chances just to try and show they were right (or wrong imho) In sticking with JB? If you’re risking a first rounder on a QB with upside, Kelly has exactly all of that written on his as well and he is under contract. I say build that defense up with those high picks and the oline. Never forget the trenches, they are the initial lines of both sides. Once the opposing guys get past the initial lines, you never know what’s happening.
