  1. I'll be disappointed if his contract is absurdly large

How could it be anything but absurdly large?

Given his previous contract and his production, he stands to demand a gross overpayment.

I love Peyton and want to see him kept by the Colts' date=' but where's the money going to come from to surround him with the talent he needs to win? The older he gets, the more he's going to need support. This deal has to be a win-win or everybody loses.[/quote']

This has been an issue all along. Indy has always been burdened by their greatest asset. The mantra has always been "As long as we have Manning, we have a chance to win". What we saw last year was the compromise folds into failure when we get hit with inordinate amounts of injury.

  2. In other news, water is wet....

I would place DT before RB though as Indy still needs someone capable of playing the NT position on the roster. Mookie looked pretty good there the past few years but is a FA and the Moala, Nevis and Matthews all are better suited for the UT position.

How do they arrive at the conclusion that we need more depth at RB? We needed run blocking, not runners. Add to that we've added a fine looking RB via the draft. We have two first rounders already at RB, one of which posted 1k+ rushing in his rookie year. I would put RB among the least of our worries.

  3. I agree that there are built in consequences.

I just keep thinking of a regular person getting called out at work for something that did not happen at work.

I realize that the NFL is different and actually I think that's a good thing.

I just wonder sometimes if we are possibly too intolerant of judgement lapses.

Well, of course people put far too much levity to any transgressions by celebrities. The public holds them accountable at a far higher level then the average citizen. Can you imagine having to hold a press conference to apologize for getting drunk on Friday night?

it has been proven in study after study that it's parents' date=' friends, etc that by far have the most influence. i think it's just easier to blame celebrities, music, violent video games, etc.[/quote']

I think the irony here is that these issues upsets the parents more than it upsets the kids. I have a 12 year old daughter that was enamored with Miley Cyrus. She grew up on squeaky clean Hannah Montana. When Miley was seen smoking drugs through a bong and acting a fool, my daughters reaction was essentially "What a dumb***". I didn't hide it from her. I didn't pretend. I watched it with her because I know she had seen it. I explained to her that this is the kind of crap thats coming your way. This is also often step 1 to getting yourself in trouble. I pointed at how Miley was out of control of herself and highlighted how this gets you taken advantage of, especially being a girl. If you do that and pass out, your going to be sorry. If you do that and a cops sees it, how are you going to hide it? You're not, you're going to jail. Put yourself in a bad place and you will stay in that place and deal with the consequence.

It is parents that determine how instances like this are received by their kids. Therein lies the problem, Mr BLOODontheTRACKS. Some kids have scumbags as parents. Some kids have parents that hide the realities of life from them for far too long, until these problems show up at the threshold of their homes. Kids will replace absentee parents with something, that void is filled with something. Often they look up to celebrities to fill this void.

But you're right, it is far easier to blame Celebrities and video games. These things provide an easy out and often the parents that make the loudest noise about such things are also the ones who have the greatest deal of dysfunction in relation to their kids. Often, they are the ones that are most disconnected.

  4. Of course I am! Using poetic licence to emphasise a point is fun. As I've said many times, hiw many fans wear Polian Jerseys to games? Zero. It's the players who win matches, not the bureaucrats.

Without Manning, Colts would likely still be struggling along, and certainly without Bill. I just don't think one decision should elevate him to the hero status he holds on here.

No one hero is smitten with Polian as a heroic figure head. The man deserves some respect, and conversely, doesn't deserve such disrespect. Yes, It is the race car that crosses the finish line but who built the darn thing?

I agree with your forecast of Costonzo. Due to the lockout, he will be several games late in arriving on the starting roster. But he will get there, and stay there. Solid pick from Polian Jr.

  5. Who's forgot the brilliant moves - Manning over Leaf? Are you serious? At best a coin flip. Half of the posters on here would have got that one right. One SB in how many years with Manning and Kelly. Wow.

Clearly he's done some good stuff, but he's also clearly lost it in the past 5 years. Even Marvin had to hang it up. I'm more behind the guys who actually take the field, not the pen pushers who dictate from the box.

To diminish Polian's role to that of a "pen pusher" is rather over-simplifying. The man constructed some of the most dominant teams in the AFC for the better part of 20 years now.

  6. I care because too many professional sports figures don't recognize or care that kids watch what they do and whether they like it or not, many times they are role models (good or bad) for kids. Children imitate them and their on and off field behavior because they think they are so cool.

Being a professional athlete comes with a responsibility, IMHO. That includes making things right if you mess up and proving that while no one is perfect, you don't have to let mistakes define you.

These young players know the game. Not referring to the game of football, but the game of endorsements and fan perception. They are well versed by agents and others in their camp to realize what is expected of them.

Players make a decision as to whether or not they will cater to endorsements. Take "sticky" Ricky Williams for example. A great running back that quit in his prime because he wanted to smoke pot. Literally stating this outright. He came back but endorsements are going to be limited to local area used car dealerships. Here we have a player that sticks one foot in the gutter, one fist in the goal. He had his cake and ate it too. A bad bad bad example for kids whom have learned a fowl lesson. In practice, one rarely gets away with this sort of duality.

  7. Not necessarily....the draft class was terrible at the safety position.

That has yet to be determined. Projections are just that....projections. The reality is some of this years safety class could be inducted into the hall of fame in 20 years. Were teams falling over each other to land a safety in round one? Nope, not even close. But that doesn't suggest that teams weren't poised and eager to * some of these kids, knowing the draft class would allow them to pick safeties lower in the draft without worry of consequence.

lol (S N A T C H) is dissallowed via word filter? Are you guys serious with this crap?

  8. I agree....I mean the fact is a lot of people drink but, you can't be the morality police about everything. Yeah, it may look bad because of the organization they play for, and the attitude associated with it. Could've been worse though, could've been rape, murder, gun possession, drug possession, or something more decadent to tarnish the image of these player and luckily it wasn't. Put it behind and focus on the upcoming season. If these problems persist, then do something.

I'm sure the alcohol related issue will be addressed and accountability will be expected, a meeting on this matter will be among the first concerns once they take to camp. But, as you said, perspective is key and these legal issues are more indicative of complacency among millionaire youngsters with nothing better to do. DWI, violence and crimes involving victims are not tolerated as much as these relatively pedestrian offenses.

As well, Jerry shouldn't be exponentially punished for his teammates past transgressions. If they got a slide, he gets a slide.

  9. He's 23 years old (or will be in about 5 week). Is that still a kid in America? That to me, is adulthood. Not saying drinking and getting drunk is a crime, but this is not about age (as people of all ages get pretty drunk most of the time). This is about making the correct (or should I say incorrect) choices as a professional footballer.

I'm 39 so ya....thats a kid. 23 year olds are prone to doing things like havin a few drinks and creating a few fusses. What he did is no higher a degree of crime than speeding or jay-walking.

  10. Isn't saying he may not start pretty much the same thing as he may start?

I don't know how anyone would know Castonzo not starting to be true given he has yet to practice with the team and his coaches. Seems like they just needed something to write about with all the football nothingnessgoing on right now.

Well of course this is derived from an absolute void in substantial NFL news, aside from the CBA game.

A first round draft pick is, more often than not, expected to start. This report may serve to temper such expectations. With good reason, I might add.

You essentially answered your own question. "I don't know how anyone would know Castonzo not starting to be true" followed by "he has yet to practice with the team".

LG/RG are, under any circumstances, high end cerebral positions. Combine the very nature of this position with the added complexity of a Manning led offense and a far delayed start to any semblance of synergy or practice, and we have been provided ample reason to put some merit to this report.

  11. it's not only potential lost revenue from unplayed games. if games are missed, then fans will be lost permanently. that would cost a lot more money in the long run

i think most fans will forget all about his off-season as long as football resumes on schedule

Both sides knew how far they could push it, to what date they could stand their ground. Both sides knew concessions would only be made as this date closed in. I feel as though all the protests from fans only fueled the leagues assurances that the fans would remain, wallets open in their hand. Silence would have been the best weapon for the fans, but all too many couldn't shut it up. Hollow threats from overtly eager fans. Our way of life was never threatened, only our entertainment stood in threat. It was they, the league and the players, who's way of life would have been impacted by a failed season.

Though they weren't playing football, they were in fact playing games.

  12. I posted extensively about my feelings that this lockout was a show. Too much money to be lost for them to actually miss a season. The inherent irony being; Greed caused the lockout and greed will end the lockout. At least there is one thing we can count on in the realm of NFL football .....greed.

Oh....and HI everyone. I finally decided to show up here. The debacle surrounding our last move had me thinking I wouldn't be corresponding with any of you any more. It is truly great to see you all again!!
