Which QB gives us the best chance to win in 2023?
Gigc replied to 2006Coltsbestever's topic in Colts Football
not sure any of them do. Peyton was one of the best rookie QBs ever. and he threw 26 picks and we went 3-13 his first year. On a team with bookend OTs, Marvin Harrison and Marshall Faulk. -

But even using these stats---we'll assume they're right for now--- I'll take a 50-50 chance of a hit over a 10% chance any day of the week. So, draft a QB in the first round... -

Hey man, I loved Freeney. But he did not lead us to a Super Bowl. You can make the argument that Bob Sanders did... Only used all caps cuz I didn't see the italics up there. No snark intended. We just disagree. I disagree on this issue strongly. When you are so bad you get a top 5 pick and you don't have a QB, in a draft where most observers are saying there are four potentially good ones... well -

okey doke. The distance in years between Brady and Wilson is 12 years; Brady and Purdy? 22 years. (Rodgers? Green Bay? he was a 1st round draft choice. I UNDERSTAND what you're saying. Johnny Unitas was signed off the street. BUT --- I will continue to argue your odds of finding a really good QB is MUCH greater in round 1 (and LOW round 1) than hunting for one in 2 through 7. I really don't want to wait for 12 to 20 years to find relevancy. (By the by, that 20 years? that's how long it was between Bert Jones and Peyton Manning. that's a looooooong time.) But hey, an all pro DE will lead us to a Super Bowl... -

It's just delaying the inevitable. Find a QB later. We've been punting since Andrew retired. We haven't had a pick this low in round 1 since 2012. Swing away on the position of biggest need. Unitas, Jones, Peyton, Luck. or Domres, Hogeboom, Chandler, Trudeau... -
Did not see that one coming. Anyone have "kicker" in the pool?

C'mon man. Elway and Eli never played a down for any other team than the one that had them first. -

Everything I've read says they LOVE him in Kentucky. Not heard any problems with leadership. -

Well, one other thing Richardson does REALLY well is feel pressure and move in the pocket. I like all four of these guys but richardson seems from vids to have a better feel in the pocket than Levi's. What we don't know is how well he processes and feels defenses -

Funny. Everyone loves that story about Peyton telling Polian and the Colts in his pre draft interview that if they didn't pick him he'd be "kicking their *" twice a year... -

The other thing that Josh McCown (long time NFL QB, recently hired by the Panthers I think) noted about Levis' throwing motion was how compact it is. No big windup. Makes it easier for him to throw from a smaller pass pocket... -

Just for context, Ballard traded their 1st round pick a few years back on March 18th---- well ahead of the draft -

We're livin in a new era of NFL with all of the advances in understanding the true toll of the sport on athletes, not just their bodies, but CTE. Combine that with the fact that top NFL players can earn enough in their young years that they can afford to step away from the game. We've seen a LOT of really good players step away early, like Andrew, like Patrick Willis, Luke Kuechly. Tua having a number of concussions. They have to be ready... -

The fact that we could be bidding against a division rival --- in a division that already has trevor lawrence in it ---- is what has Chicago licking its chops. This could be a defining moment for Ballard. He hasn't HAD to draft a QB this far in his career. Hard to tell which way he'd go based on his Colts drafting. Eason and Ehlinger couldn't be further apart as types. Eason was all traits --- size and arm. Sam was considered lacking traits--- arm strength, size, accuracy. He was all heart, playmaking, leadership. -

No man. I lived here when he was drafted. The painkillers thing was years later. He had personality issues for sure. Turned off teammates and then started playing REALLY badly. Had a horrific game against the chiefs and his career fell apart -

Then drew Brees and russel wilson. They are contemporary. Finally, this just for debate. If everyone is absolutely positive young is just too small, then why are scouts and clubs and GMs still talking about at the top of the draft. Why not just all say "wouldn't touch him until round 2 or 3"? I'm not not pushing for him. I'm still more comfortable with a bigger prospect. Especially after luck. But he's a really interesting prospect. -

But there are outliers. Brees, russell wilson. And they were SB terrific QBs. Young is definitely a conundrum... -

hear what you're sayin, but some would argue that Fields really hasn't developed THAT much at this point. He played well this year, but still has a lot of work to do as a passer, I think.

I think one thing that makes it harder to see the Colts choosing Bryce Young is Andrew Luck. It's not like this franchise hasn't recently dealt with a franchise QB suffering career-shortening injuries. I think that would play in the back of their minds just as much, if not more, than Ballard's metrics... But HEY!!! life is full of surprises. And we haven't even gotten to the combine yet -

You may end up being right about Richardson, but I'd be very very surprised. If teams drafted Brandon Weeden, EJ Manuel, Paxton Lynch, Tebow and Haskins in the first round, then SOMEBODY is going to take a swing on Richardson's ceiling before the end of round 1.
