  1. The 2023 season saw an unprecedented number of teams lose their starting quarterback.

In spite of that, the Chiefs had to go through FOUR playoff opponents that DIDN'T lose their starting QB.  Tagliova, Allen, Jackson and Purdy all played and were healthy.

The 49ers didn't any "breaks" either, facing Love, Goff and Mahomes after getting a first-round bye.

They didn't appear to get much of a break from their division opponents either - for the 9ers, Smith and Stafford played almost the whole year (and the Cardinals stunk no matter who was QBing them), and for the Chiefs, Herbert and Wilson played pretty much the whole year.  Honestly, the Raiders didn't experience much of a dropoff from Garappolo to O'Connell from what I saw.

I just thought that was interesting because normally in such an injury-plagued season the SB champ "gets a break" by getting a pretty easy draw, but that wasn't the case for either participant really.

As a matter of fact, of all of the playoff teams, only the Browns and Steelers had significant challenges with stability at the QB position.

Tied for worst with the 2020 Steelers

I'd forgotten about that.  Embarrassing and frustrating that their lone W during their collapse was us.  That nonsense block in the back call that negated Hines's 65-yard catch and run?  I was furious.

  3. One other iron to put in this thread's fire:

It seems like Minshew clearly has the arm strength to heave the ball 50 yards down the field.  It also seems like his accuracy when he does so isn't horrible (I've seen better, I've seen MUCH worse, even at the NFL level).  Do we all agree it's more either an unwillingness to push it down the field or perhaps just a vision issue, i.e. he needs to get better at reading the defense and knowing when the deep threat is going to be open?

Here's the question:  If it is indeed either of those last two things, are those COACHABLE?  Are those things Minshew could WORK ON and IMPROVE at this stage of his career?

If Jerry Hughes didn’t get hurt in that game last week colts probably get a TD and win. It took away all the momentum.

Browns game sticks out because we actually did win with a sack strip fumble recovery.

Jerry Hughes?  Sorry, I'm not sure which play you're talking about.

  5. Why too soon?  That was easily the closest game we played all year.  The bogus PI call was just one example, there was also Minshew protecting the ball better in the end zone so Garrett doesn't get a strip-sack TD.  Either of those things happen (and nothing else that bounced our way doesn't bounce the other way) and we're hosting a playoff game.

  6. As most of us know, the NFL is a league where a play here and a play there can be an enormous difference.

We were 1-2 in games decided by 10 or 11 points.

We were 2-3 in games decided by 14 or more points.  Biggest win, 30-13 over Pitt, biggest loss 34-14 to Cincy

We were 6-3 in one-score games.

In our 9 one-score games, what are some examples you can think of of individual plays that easily could have swung the game in the other direction?  I'm thinking of the bogus PI call in the Browns game for one, or if Matt Gay doesn't tie an NFL record with 4 50-yard field goals in a game against the Ravens.

IMHO strength of schedule is overrated.  Look back at SuperBowl champions and participants over the last 10 to 20 years - you'll see plenty of teams that had easy schedules.  You'll also see plenty of teams that had easy schedules that couldn't BEAT the teams on their schedule.  Yesterday is a perfect example - many are going to say, "Oh, wow, you beat a 4-8 team in overtime."  It was a 4-8 division rival in THEIR HOUSE.

Last night's upset is the perfect illustration of what I'm talking about.  Who had Jacksonville laying an egg against a backup QB?  You gotta beat the teams on your schedule no matter what your record is.

  9. How is this injury-riddled band of ragamuffins 6-5?  Surely there are more talented teams with less wins?

How much of this "success" (because let's face it, as easy as our schedule has been, winning 6 games by this point in the season is an accomplishment) is because the coaches are busting their humps to get the players fired up to play and doing a good job of maximizing their talents to put them in a position to succeed?

I'd love to see what this staff could do with, for example, a healthy Taylor and Richardson for 16 games, not missing Stewart for 6 games, basically not losing all 4 of their top 4 corners etc.

If we were gifted anything it was Tucker missing his field goal attempt. He’s usually money 9 times out of 10.

Playing devil's advocate he was 2 of 8 over his career from 60+ before that kick.  He was actually 54 of 79 from 50+ before that kick which is INSANELY impressive.  He's 106 of 118 for his career from under 50 and has never missed from under 30.

Great kicker.  No question about it.  But asking even the best to be clutch with a 60+er on the line is a stretch.

EDIT:  The all-time NFL average for 60+ yard field goal is 17.2%.

  11. ...that I don't lose a second of sleep when I see a bad call go in the Colts' favor for a change.

I'm sure you all know exactly which call I'm talking about.

A few plays before that I swear a saw a Ravens OLman with a fistful of jersey between the 2 nines on Buckner's jersey.  Flag? Nope.  I'm pretty sure that play resulted in a first down.

  12. Don't know how many of you frequent YouTube, but there's a Youtuber who posts a lot of "topic" videos, like dumbest game-losing decisions, biggest chokes, best players to never make the Super Bowl etc.  There was one video that was "longest 4th-down conversions".  It brought back a memory of a game from 1998 where Aaron Glenn returned a field goal for a touchdown at the end of the half while most of the Colts players were just standing around twiddling their thumbs.  I was so embarrassed LOL.

But the Colts did come back and win that game.  2 plays that stood out were Marcus Pollard carrying I believe it was either Aaron Glenn or Otis Smith 2 yards into the endzone on his back, and Marshall Faulk's 4th-and-17 conversion.  It's funny because Faulk was catching a lot of heat for not being able to pick up a 3rd and 1, but what RB do you want in the backfield to pick up a 4th and 17?  There aren't many!

It's a shame the win didn't mean much in the grand scheme of things because the team showed a lot of heart that day, beating an eventual AFC Championship Game participant.

  13. Grunch

Those who are saying Rivers wouldn't be a huge upgrade over Brissett are kidding themselves.

Rivers threw 20 picks to Brissett's 6 - that's the ONLY area where Brissett was better.  Period.

Their completion percentages and sack totals were similar.

Rivers averaged 90 more passing yards per game, had 12 completions of 40+ yards to Brissett's 3 and had 57 completions of 20+ yards to Brissett's 32.  Rivers had 217 first downs by passing to Brissett's 143.

I know stats don't tell the whole story, but it's pretty clear Rivers is far superior.

  14. The 2019 Colts are 3-1 in games where the offense fails to generate 20 points.

    2018 Colts:  0-2

    2017 Colts:  0-10

    2016 Colts:  0-3

    2015 Colts:  2-4

    2014 Colts:  1-1

    2013 Colts:  0-3

    2012 Colts:  2-3

    2011 Colts: 1-10

    2010 Colts: 1-1

The 2009 Colts were 3-0 in such games until the last two weeks when they rested their starters.

  15. A stupid penalty at the end of the half gifts them 3 points.

A stupid fumble on a safety punt gifts them ANOTHER 3 points.

A missed extra point leads to a failed 2 point attempt, then a missed last-second FG - 5 points

(In case anyone's wondering, I'm giving the Steelers the pick 6.  I consider that more a great play by them than a bad one by us).

No Hilton, Funchess, Brissett, Kelly, Desir, Campbell for all or part of the game, we GIFT them 11 points, and we still only lose by 2 in Pittsburgh.

Can you imagine how dangerous this team could be if we could get everybody healthy and play 60 disciplined minutes?
