  1. Even if we had our choice of FA QBs, or QBs in the Draft, with our schedule next year, a .500 record would be EPIC. I think with Brissett we might win 5 or 6. (If you haven't seen our home/away schedule I had to have us win all 3 home division games and Cincy just to find 4 home wins and 4 road wins was no easy feat either).

If we go 7-9 or worse with anything other than a promising rookie I think Ballard will be on the hottest of seats and in listening to this interview I think he knows it. He has to roll the dice on a rookie. He has the luxury of sitting him behind Brissett for a year and that buys him another year to debut and succeed against FAR easier competition the next year.

I think they'd have to be sniffing the playoffs at that point or we'll have all new coaches and GM and a failing 3rd year QB which could set us back to a place we haven't been since the darkest days. Many forget or are too young to recall but prior to Manning we had Jim Harbaugh Capt. Comeback, so it's going back to the Jeff George/Eric Dickerson Jack Trudeau Mike Pagel etc. Losing dog years. We are a Ballard solution/pick from becoming a basketball city again.

DD could have asked him about that but didn't. Instead he tossed up softball conspiracy theories that even if true weren't going to be answered in any case so it was a missed opportunity.  Our tiny market has been blessed by great success of our two Pro Sports teams. But the risk of becoming irrelevant because FAs don't want to come here without a real chance to win it all is real. That could spiral in a lot of ways.

It all rests in Ballard's hands along with some luck.  I like his chances, not that it matters, nor can we do anything about it anyway.

I'm thinking about the potential of carrying three QBs all year, and in that case, I would think that a fully guaranteed, one year minimum deal isn't a major consideration. But if they are only thinking about having another vet on the roster for a limited time, then the prorated contract is a factor.

And yes, I was thinking of Inman as well. Though that was a very different circumstance, obviously.

I agree, I would be fine with Osweiler for a year AND Walker/Kelly at the same time.  Our 53rd player is usually never suited up.. having options all season at QB seems a better use of spot 53.

    THATS the $64000 Question

If Briskett is 15th we need to build the team around him

If Briskett is 30th we need to develop someone else

Look at the next few games as Brisketts JOB INTERVIEW

Does he have the talent to be a good starter in the NFL...... its really yet to be determined

He has the skills to be "that guy" He appears to have the leadership ability to be "that guy".......

I continue to think he is a very good prospect

However......... the time to dance.... is NOW, for JB

If he doesnt pass the muster.......  (4-5 weeks in), I want to see Chad Kelly get the chance

Chad has been playing against 3rd and 4th team players mostly.  Even in the Chicago game it was 2nd team and lower.  We haven't seen him play #1 talent.  I hope we don't get a chance because Jacoby plays so well.  Leaders don't let "Denver" happen.  We have leaders on Offense across the line, TE'S and Hilton.  Maybe that would be enough..

I agree he looked the best during PreSeason, just no apples to apples comparisons talent wise.  SD was going to be a longshot to win with Luck.  Any idea our hopes now?  I am more concerned week 2 against TN.  That will be key.

    That seems very high.

That's because from about 10 on down there is very little difference.  I don't see him as worse than 10 other starting QB's.  And I see very little difference outside of team personnel and coaching past the top half.  Do you think there's much difference?  Since some are challenging me to name even 1 worse starting QB, I will ask you, do you think we are getting the #1 pick next year?  I don't think we'll be anywhere near it.  With a completely dysfunctional team/coach/gm and zero prep Jacoby still finished above 2 other teams.  Luck was top 3, the drop off after about 8 is tremendous.. after 15 is enormous and I see little to no difference between his talent and bottom half QBs.  I only see differences in the other team personnel and coaching/GMs.

Guess we'll soon see.  I only saw Luck winning 9-10 games with this schedule (as did Vegas).  So if Jacoby can keep us from losing 11 games he's met or exceeded expectations by the league.  I think he can keep us around .500, not more than 2 games off of Luck.  Our schedule was easy last year and we won 10.  This year our division has the toughest road.  If he could win 8 I think that would be impressive.  9 could win us the division or wildcard if the AFC South beat each other up.  10 would be like Luck played.  6+ would beat Vegas expectations.  Now more than ever this is a team record, not a top tier QB achievement.

We had the QB with an incompetent GM who provided a cruddy oline and defense around him that broke him physically and mentally.....

That same 'healthy' QB with this GM would win the Superbowl.

But's and if's... does it matter anymore? Luck seems to have gotten hurt doing something other than football this time around for sure.  We know 100% that no one on the Colts caused it.  There is plenty of reason to speculate if the shoulder was football related as well.  In which case this is all solely on Luck.  Additionally, people keep saying "he had a kidney laceration that he played through" but that isn't the story.  Sure, he got hit and it got lacerated.  I have had a kidney laceration as well.  Guess what?  It doesn't hurt.  Yes, it is dangerous and damaged and had to heal, but he finished the game unaware until later it was damaged.  Every player in the NFL that plays is playing hurt after game one.  By the end of the season they are often very banged up and in pain game after game.  College players experience the same things.  So it isn't unusual that he played through it.  The O Line sucked like about half of them do.  This is an obvious league wide problem.  Kids in college don't often play pro style against top tier opponents so they either dominate their opponents easily 8 of 11 games, or the schemes are such that they don't have to maintain blocks as long so they never learn how to play properly.  If they played against top talent 90% of the time like the NFL, they'd learn.  And if they had to practice twice as much and twice as long as they once did, at least early in their career, they'd be more prepared.  But they keep negotiating less practice and now teams like the Rams barely practice at all.

But Luck is a memory and Brissett is the now.  If he sucks, bringing in guys like Osweiler, who have their own issues, is the best we can do because let's face facts.. Luck screwed everyone waiting til now, fans, team, coaches, GM etc.  So we take what we can get, be glad our back up isn't much much worse as in past years, and see if the rest of the team can come through.  I'd be happy with a competitive team that is in games all season.  A winning record would be wonderful.  Sniffing or getting in the playoffs is a lot to expect but if Brissett exceeds expectations, we may yet have something to look forward to on Sundays around here.  If not, the Pacers start in October.

Name a team he would have started for

Miami... you asked for one, I gave you one.

  6. I don't get why people aren't excited that we "lucked out" (great pun for this) having Jacoby on the Roster because it is likely he would have/will get signed as a starter by another team next year.  We already have him, have a history and a whole year audition with a playoff caliber team.  If he gets us in or even close to the playoffs with this schedule, he's our guy.  And THAT would be a great result from a terrible situation.

Sure, we need a better back up for 2 games.. I think Osweiler would be perfect.  I would even keep BOTH on the roster as long as possible to see them compare to each other.  One might be our long term back up and imagine if Jacoby could help us to a winning season and we also had another top tier backup?

Brissett is getting massive short shrift by media and fans alike.  I am on vacation in Wisconsin and I've worn a Colts cap and had over a dozen people stop me to talk about Luck and 100% of them followed the question with "Brissett just isn't good enough to fill in" to which I said, "we are so lucky to have a top tier back up already in house, it could be so much worse and it might be surprisingly good in the end."  I think the only place Jacoby might not be up to muster is processing speed of trouble spots.  Luck was a great improviser and Jacoby seems fairly vanilla.  But if the right plays are called, the right preparation is done, he can physically match :Luck.  His arm is slightly stronger and he's big and tough and healthy.  He may not be as quick, but we don't want him running anyway unless it is wide open.  Hopefully he learned last year from Luck to get down and get rid of the ball, something it took Luck sitting out a season to learn.

I think things could be so much worse.  I figure Brissett is in the 15-22 range of QB's in the league.  If Ballard and Reich have built the way they say they are building, that might be enough to win.  The Colts only win with strong defense and a run game, whether it was Manning or Harbaugh or Luck (which is why Luck's era had no real chance of making it all the way until this year).

Which would shock you more?  We finish 5-11 this year or we play in and win a playoff game?  I'd be more shocked if we lost 11 games.  And if Brissett pulled that off, he's held up to Luck's productivity for any given season but one.  And if he keeps his INTs down, his likely smaller TD rate won't harm us as much.

The defense and Zach Crocket had far more to do with the success in 95 than Harbaugh did.    He was ok.  He certainly didn't carry the team.

Well, apparently Irsay disagrees with you, but then you're JVan and he'a a nobody.   I don't see Crocket or the defenders on the ring.. how could Irsay be so clueless you say?

  8. I agree... no point in ever saying his name again... he is elsewhere doing other things he'd rather do in life.  I do feel bad for all those kids (and anyone else frankly) who got stuck with useless #12/Luck jerseys.

I wonder if they will buy all that stuff back like the long snapper offered to buy season tickets back? I am guessing... not so much.

HARBAUGH got beat by a lot of teams too.   What's your point?

Rather than admit your mistake, you deflect.  That's a weak move.  But alas...

The point is that Luck collapsed in the playoffs all 4 times having poor games.  Harbaugh playing very hurt got us a single play in the endzone from the Super Bowl Luck never got remotely close.  Harbaugh had a weaker team and Faulk, their best player was out.  Luck had Hilton and some other solid players during his run compared to that team.  Harbaugh did not quit on the team but rather played through his serious injury and tried to get the Colts to the Super Bowl, then he was sent packing to Baltimore.  He clearly deserved a spot on the ring.

If Luck had at least retired after the season pre-Free Agency and draft, that would have given the team a shot at a QB this year and/or at least prepped them better to be ready to move on.  Luck's accomplishments were solid, no question, but there have been a LOT of excellent position players over the years who will never get a whiff of the ring.  I think well after Hilton and Vinateri are up there and perhaps Constanzo if he has a few more productive seasons, then it makes sense to consider him.  But who else is on a ring of honor that retired in their 20's without ever being All Pro, MVP or playing in a Super Bowl or championship?  Aside from someone who died early etc. I can only think of a tiny number of players from the modern era who might fit that, and they may have been more decorated in their careers.

But make no mistake, he WILL be in the ring.. that is 100% assured.  Whether he deserves to be among the HOFers and ALL Time Colts, that another issue.  He had 4 good seasons as a Colt.  He led the league in TD passes one time and made the Pro-Bowl 4 times.  There are a lot of guys in the Colts history who had really good runs during 4 years at their position.  They won't get in, but Luck will because of his name and peoples infatuation with recency and popularity.

So much nonsense.   They didn't get beat by the ravens because they didn't exist.   They didn't play the browns that year.  They did beat the Patriots.   However Tom Brady wasn't the qb and Belichick was in Cleveland.    They did get blown out by the 8-8 Vince Evans led raiders.

Andrew played many games seriously hurt.   Jim Harbaugh missed games because he punched Jim Kelly and broke his hand.   Maybe it's you that doesn't remember the Harbaugh days.   Andrew was miles better than Jim.

This is coming from a guy that considers 95 my 3rd favorite season.   But if Harbaugh is in, luck should be in

Read much? LUCK got beat by KC, the RAVENS and the PATRIOTS.  I stopped reading after that since you're not even aware of what you are replying to.

I didn't say it was nothing.   I said it wasn't close to being down by 28 and winning.   And I'm correct

Yup.. a tipped ball away from being the greatest play in teams history.  Or, a blown refs call.  Plus, the Colts played KC at home and should have won that game.  Those Colts probably shouldn't have made the playoffs, certainly didn't have anyone on the team close to Luck or Hilton or any of the other good players the Colts had in the KC game.  So Luck brought back a favored team that was clearly under performing in that game.  Definitely impressive to bring it back to where it should have been in the first place.  Those 95 Colts were more impressive as a team in my view.  And they never got blown out by the Patriots or shut down by Baltimore or KC like Luck did each time.

Is Luck worthy for the Ring of Honor? Jury is out.  His only "achievement" was bring a bad team to the playoffs.  3 times.  Now he's bailed out and we'll always wonder what if.  Harbaugh played seriously hurt in that game.  Luck didn't want to play on a hurt ankle any longer.  Tough call.

Andrew Luck was a far superior talent than Harbaugh.   If you can't see that then I don't know what to say.   This is coming from a guy that loves Jim Harbaugh

I never argued that.. and yet he clearly took a super mediocre team and got us a jump ball from the Super Bowl.  Luck had a series of collapses in each playoff ending game.  The Pats blew us out each time we played.  Don't you remember "Captain Comeback" and his heroics?  They rivaled Luck's KC playoff comeback.  You might be too young?

  13. 2 minutes ago, jvan1973 said:

Look.  I love Jim Harbaugh. Andrew was miles better than him.   Our run in 95 was lucky.   The colts run in 2013 was far more impressive from the qb perspective

I can't say the talent around Harbaugh was better than around Luck, can you? Harbaugh rose up in those playoffs and we really should have won that game if not for Ref nonsense.  And even having to play against the Steelers and the Refs, we still had a jump ball to go to the Super Bowl.  Luck was never remotely competitive against New England nor any other team that knocked us out of the playoffs.  I just think Harbaugh's heroics earned him a place on the ring, and I think it was Manning that caused Harbaugh to be jettisoned wasn't it?  Hard to recall.

I think the more questionable name is Marshall Faulk,  Sure, he was a HOFer but only played 4 meaningless seasons for us and we didn't resign him.  That felt more like boosting Colts cred by listing him there than the other way around.

I’ll never forget that game. So long as I live I’ll always remember that last play.

Well, we got royally screwed by refs all game that day.  We SHOULD have made the Super Bowl.  I was bummed at the time that they sent Harbaugh packing to Chicago I think.  (Not sure, been a few years).

I’ve honestly never agreed with him being in there, either.

I think tenure should play one of, if not THE largest role in getting in. It gives emphasis to great seasons versus great seasons over the long haul.

Harbaugh got us a play away from a Super Bowl... Luck never did that.

"One NFL salary cap man relayed that third-round negotiations have proven to be more challenging than other rounds in recent years. The reason is that first- and second-round picks can receive a maximum of 25 percent allocation of a team's rookie salary cap, but because the third round doesn't max out at 25 percent, there is often debate over what the correct percentage should be. That has created a situation where the third round has been the spot in the draft where some agents are pushing for more annually, such as the inclusion of workout bonuses in the deals."

Thanks for looking that up Dew.  Odd that they wouldn't just set the number.  Perhaps it is a learning tool for both sides.  3rd round is where battles take place to set the market in a way, rather than holding up 1st and 2nd rounders. It seems illogical, but perhaps only on the surface.  This might just be revealing on where certain battles in the next player/league negotiations will settle for each side.

For whatever reason, all draft pick contracts are predetermined except for the third round. It has nothing to do with Okereke, it's just the uniqueness of third round contracts in the CBA.

Really? That's even stranger than I thought then.  I think that would qualify as being odd in general.  Any idea why they would leave a loophole where in other cases there is none?

Yeah, I think if he could have managed even 5 injury free seasons playing like he did he would have been a HOFer.  He was a paper Monster.

    This was so good.

I was a little disappointed.  We didn't get more from it than "he's just a regular guy outside of world class talent on the football field" sort of commentary and I think that was already established in the trailer.  I had hoped to learn more about his life and history directly from him, but that isn't what this was and the more important point was certainly made.

I do like all of these a great deal, it humanizes the players and the "larger than life" people that make up the league on all sides.  So that is a welcome peak and an important reminder and perspective.

I think this should be done for most "famous" people.  It would connect them back to reality for both sides.  It would also set a good example for the "rage or rave" culture our country has devolved into.   Whether you have many millions of dollars and financial freedom that comes with "fame" or not, after you find yourself in the mansion after driving the sports car home and you go inside and close the door, you are still you and all your flaws and demons, gifts and virtues remain.  If only THAT lesson would be reintroduced to society we'd all be so much better that we are now.  It is a needed "Red Pill" of reality.

Appreciate their talent, but don't lionize/demonize them and realize that by doing so you dehumanize them to a degree and at the same time you dehumanize yourself.  You are neither better or worse for what someone else does unless you're in that person's direct orbit and have a say.  People with fame and money do not have easier lives, and in most cases they do not have better lives than anyone else nor do they deserve positive or negative expectations placed on them by others.  In that respect, we're all in this together.  Just Plain Folks.

I think he has his priorities in a good place.  Enjoy your life as if you weren't a famous football player.  He doesn't need the false narrative of "fame" and the "lifestyle" because that is and always has been a complete lie.  It doesn't matter if it is Football or Music or Acting or Politics etc..

Money is a tool like any other and nothing more and Fame is a false God not worthy of worship.  It won't fix your plumbing when there is a massive leak in the middle of the night and it won't keep your brother from being murdered.  It might be a useful tool in the first and useless in the second, but it doesn't insulate you from either.  You're still you no matter what the scoreboard says.  No better or worse than anyone else.  It is what is left when the "rage or rave" passes.  You.
