Browns have had way to many coverage busts and that goes back to play design and confusion.

You’re the deep safety, WR runs at your face and you don’t turn to cover. That’s not play design, that’s just bad coverage.

Gus’s defense is dependent on pressure from the front four.  We were fifth in sacks but not so good in pressure.  I think it’s more than likely he stays and Ballard goes out and gets a new ER who can be expected to bring the pressure.  Our current ER’s are nice players but not dominant in bringing pressure.  I’m expecting a major attempt to get that player.

I think he comes back, but I don't really want that.  I am not usually a grass is always greener guy.  But for better or worse, at this point, I just think it's Irsay's style since Tony Dungy, if not before, to want his team in a Tampa 2 style defense.  So if we're going to keep Gus (or bring in a similar DC if not), we do need better pressure, yes, but jsut a sheer numbers game, 5 vs 4 is not exactly setting yourself up for success.  So there needs ot be more creativity scheming pressure, be that blitzes or stunts, and so on.

I'm just tired of either coming back or going into the 4th tied or with the lead, and needing a stop or turnover, only for the defense to get utterly eviscerated, picked apart, lose the lead, and then need our average/backup QB to march down the field and score a TD just to come up short.  Hasn't been just htis year, but this year highlighted it for sure.

I don't usually make win/loss record predictions. But my expectations were that this was a year to evaluate the state of the roster, especially on offense, and develop the young QB. It's obviously an INC on the second part of that.

But on the first part, the OL looked like the worst part of the team in 2022. This year, they bounced back significantly. Not exactly the OL from 2019/2020, but definitely back to a strength of the team, rather than the liability they were in 2022. Our QBs in 2022 got sacked 60 times; this year, only 41 sacks, and that's with obvious limitations at QB. The offense was again functional, and even showed some promise of things to come. I felt like coaching had a big impact on the OL play in 2022, and I think things look much better there this year.

I also thought we'd have our bumps and bruises in pass coverage and pass rush. Kenny Moore bounced back. We were intending to play a bunch of young, inexperienced players in the secondary. We lost two of them right away (Rodgers, Flowers), we cut Darius Rush, and Brents missed half the season. I thought Blackmon got better as the year went on, then he got hurt. Rodney Thomas got worse as the year went on, and he got benched, only to show up in the Texans game in the worst way, blowing another coverage in the end zone. Nick Cross showed some flashes, but too late in the year, IMO. Jaylon Jones was the only stable part of the secondary, and he was simply adequate.

I have other thoughts about the roster, but going from 4 wins to 9 wins with a limited QB and a patchwork secondary isn't too shabby. I definitely wasn't expecting 9 wins and a legitimate shot at the division back in August. I don't think we hit any impressive highs this season; even the Ravens win, while nice and fun, didn't make me think the Colts were ready to force their way into the top four of the conference or anything. But there is a lot of promise for the future.

I think the Colts should treat 2024 as if they know they have their QB of the future, and build around Richardson. I'm not saying get reckless and go crazy, but I think the time is right for some serious moves with the roster.

"Serious moves" that's a can of worms that you're going to have to elaborate on.  Serious moves as in...what?

Because I don't mind trading picks for players and vice versa, but we have little on the roster that I think would classify as ground breaking.  I think if there's a year that we move up in the draft, it could be this year if the right guy falls within trade-up distance.  I know everyone likes Harrison Jr. which I'd be on board for, but who knows where he's drafted this early on.  I hadn't even looked at other skill position players which I think is our biggest need - WR and CB amongst the top, and not necessarily in that order either.

I also think it depends on whether we keep Bradley - fingers crossed we have a change there, but not sure who's in the market.  But if we did, and shifted our defensive strategy to include more man coverage on the back end, I wonder who is on the trading block around the league - also probably too soon to tell.

I wont be saying anything that has not been said.

Good call on the 4th and 1 , wrong personnel. Cant do anything with the QB at that point. It is what it is, and we know how GM rolls. Why isn't Taylor or Moss in? I feel bad for Goodson, dropping that. Yeah, wasn't the greatest pass, but if it hits you in the hands you hopefully should be able to pull it in. Its a shame.....

Ballard seats probably pretty hot(better be), and if things don't turn next year, its time to be shown the door. We need more than just "adequate" results. He has plenty had PLENTY OF TIME.

I know its been said and talked about. Garner Minshew played this season for a starting spot next year on another team. Fine. He has bounced around for a reason. He is not the qb that will lead you to a championship.  He is perfect for what he did with the Colts this year and/ or any other team. Great back up , win some games, holds things down to the "A" team gets back in. Glad we had him, hopefully we can hang on to him, but if not, good luck. Like I mentioned and described , he is what he is.

AR showed promise. To bad he was hurt and missed the season. This next season will still be year 1 for him as far as learning and experience. Hopefully he can be on a fast track and stay healthy. Staying injury free and on the field is priority one, If that does not happen......we are in trouble.

Before the season if I would have been told we would have been 9-8 with AR or with GM. I would have taken it. Having a rookie guide you to that or that back up, I think that's somewhat acceptable.

At times this team looked better than that , and below that other times . So I guess that's what you get a .500ish winning percentage.

"Wait until next year1".......that ones getting old and worn out.

Why is his seat hot? He hired Shane. He and Shane were one play away from the playoffs (and division title). That’s after our QB of the future went down for the season due to a biological issue no one could have known. Relied on our septh all season long and many of them surprised, especially on defense.

No, if anyone needs to go it’s Gus Bradley. We were top tier in sacks and turnovers. But late in games, he was far too content with sitting in coverage, not scheme pressure on the QB except at a league lowest pace, and let opposing QBs sit back, read coverage long enough for someone to finally get open. How many 2nd and 3rd and longs did we give up conversions on? Waaaaay too many. All year long.

If Bucs win this game today that helps colts so much for them to be trying to win the division next week.

Just gotta hope for a Jags loss. I want to win our division so bad. Just sucks when we desperately needed a win this season we showed up seemingly unprepared.

  6. Is anyone watching the Texans v Titans? I can’t watch it, but the play by play on ESPN makes it sound like the most boring game of football ever. Looks like both defenses basically doing all the scoring and putting the kicker in FG range, while the offense is turning the ball over and giving the punters lots of practice.

This is not meant as a counter point to your thread, just something I was looking at this morning and didn't know where else to put it.

Gardner Minshew's passer rating in the last four wins: 81.9

Gardner Minshew's passer rating in the previous three losses: 78

We've also had three defensive TDs, and a few more short fields, over these last four games. Lots of other offensive stats are less than flattering. Last time we played an above average QB was Week 6 (Jags); last time we beat an above average QB was Week 3 (Ravens).

I think our offense is average. We have a functional QB, which is more than a lot of teams can say this year. We can move the ball, but stall out pretty often, which we saw plenty of yesterday. Minshew has multiple serious malfunctions every game. We're getting boosts from the fact that we're playing other bad-to-mediocre offenses and QBs, and getting some turnovers and STs plays. I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer, the team is getting it done and I'll take it and enjoy the run. I just think there's more to look at than points scored.

What I think it points to is pretty good coaching and preparation, and a strong competitive spirit. I also think there are a lot of young players who are getting better as the season goes on.

We did not have a first down in the last 20 minutes of regulation if memory serves.  That's not going to ever be good enough for any sort of sustained success, much less playoffs wins.

    27 yards is pathetic

People * and moaned for us to run more and not lean on Minshew so much and that’s what we did. Despite the fact they were stuffing the box and blitzing the hell out of Minshew.  We got a few first downs in there and thankfully Moore’s heroics and some pressure on their QB who couldn’t handle it (which is why we should have blitzed all game  long). But Minshew is not a guy who can beat the blitz like upper eschelon QBs . 67 yards was foreseeable.
