  1. What is so different about Zimmer and Spags ideologies or schemes (this is purely hypothetical since Spags agreed to join the Saints)? They both run defenses based on a high-motor front seven with the ability to get pressure up the middle. They both run defenses based on the PERSONNEL THEY HAVE rather than set schemes! If they were both to find themselves running the same defense, I bet they would have more ideas in common than not. Our new head coach (Zimmer in this case) is meant to be brought in as a LEADER, just like Grigson has said MANY TIMES. He will not have time to make every decision about our entire defense. Our Defensive Coordinator will have many decisions to make on his own, and having someone talented making those decisions would be a good thing. Talent is NEVER unecessary!

I know this is all a moot argument now, but nothing you've said is realistic at all.

Just because Zimmer and Spags both have attack style defenses that bring pressure up the middle doesn't mean they're the same. Terminology and language of the playbooks is something that's not easily transferable. To my knowledge, Spags and Zimmer don't use the same terminology. What you're saying is like saying the Colts should be able to pick up the Patriots spread offense easy since both teams are very pass-heavy. It's not that simple. The Patriots language on offense derives from Ron Erdhart's system, which uses more of a numerical play calling system. The Colts (or Peyton Manning, rather) uses a system completely foreign to any of the prominant offenses in the league such as the Erdhart and West Coast offenses. So to say Zimmer and Spags would work just fine on defense ignores this factor.

Furthermore, what coach (fresh off getting fired from a head coaching gig) would go be a D coordinator for a rookie, defensive-minded head coach (that he has no ties to), while also likely being unable to implement his own style of defense into a unit that he's being asked to coordinate for?.... Not happening. Wade Phillips, for example, was so effective as a D coordinator for the Texans because Kubiak is an offensive guru, and Wade was given free reign over the defensive side of the ball. Two defensive minded coaches with no ties to each other would be very difficult to do, and likely wouldn't happen.

As for Martz, our O-line is going to be the same "poor pass protecting line" no matter who we have as an offensive coordinator. Martz and Peyton (or Luck) would be able to create enough time for our players to get open. If Peyton can't handle the hits after his surgeries, HE SHOULD NOT STEP ON THE FIELD.

The point is, if you have a poor pass blocking line, it's probably not a good idea to hire a guy who stubbornly calls long developing routes, putting your QB at greater risk of getting hurt (hince, the reason he was fired from Chicago), and refuses to utilize all the weapons at his disposal on offense (trading Greg Olsen because he doesn't use TE's in his route combinations), and doesn't allow for any audibles in his system (I'd love to see how Peyton reacts when he tells him that.) Whether it be, Peyton or Luck who takes snaps for the Colts next year, why would you want to put the face of your franchise in jeopardy of continuous injury like that, right off the bat? Martz is a dipstick - whose scheme is outdated and no longer the juggernaut it once was - that has likely seen his last coaching gig in the NFL. That's why he retired.

  2. I think people do this too often. That is, make excuses for a coaches failure and success by contriving other reasons for it. I admit his legend is over inflated and much of this comes from the media. His resume is impressive however.

I'd hardly call the Steeler organization's run of success before and after Cohwer a 'contrived' reason to think his prestige might be a little over inflated. As I said, he is a fine coach, but to disregard the organization, where he made his name, track record pre and post-Cohwer would be not telling the whole story, IMO

  3. Don't be so distracted by mannerisms. He was a successful coach. His players absolutely loved and respected him, and the result was championships.

With all due respect, I think the Steelers success under Cowher is more a testament to the Rooney's (and Dick Labeau) than Cowher himself. Their sustained run of success before and after him is proof of such. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a fine coach, but his reputation is a little inflated ever since he retired. He's kind of like the football equivalent of Tupac or Biggie......

  4. He meant Manning and/or Luck. A conservative, run-heavy gameplan would not play to our strengths.

I know people have jumped on me for wanting Martz as an OC, but I think with Peyton only having a few years left, Martz could get the most out of the weapons we still have under contract. We seem to have the good-at-receiving running backs he likes (he could make Donald Brown into a monster), and good receiving tight ends. He does an excellent job of mixing up routes to create open receivers, and I would trust Peyton or Luck to be able to make good decisions and get rid of the ball before pressure gets to them. Luck would be the best possible quarterback for a Mike Martz offense due to his athleticism mixed with his pocket awareness.

    I would want:

Mike Zimmer as head coach/ Defensive Coordinator

    Mike Martz as Offensive Coordinator.

Steve Spags as assistant Defensive Coordinator / Defensive Line

Jim Tressel stays in his current clock consultant position.

You're just throwing out random names without even taking into account if said coaches have the same ideologies, philosophies or ties. You say you want Zimmer as head coach and Spags as D coordinator? That doesn't even make sense. Those two run totally different systems, and I imagine Zimmer (being a defensive coach) would want to bring his own staff on board, making the need for a big time D coordinator unnecessary, ruling Spags out.

And Mike Martz (and his 7-9 step dropback route combinations) for O coordinator, when we have a poor pass protecting line and a QB fresh off a serious neck injury? Yeah.... that makes perfect sense [/sarcasm]

  5. I don't know if this guy has been talked about, if so sorry, but I was thinking that Bruce Arians would be a great choice. He comes from one of the best fun franchises in the game and is familiar with the Colts. I think it would be a great fit.

I can't make an official thread about it because I don't have enough posts yet, but for those asking for Bruce Arians as head coach, word from the Steelers camp is he just retired:

    http://www.steelers....46-e62bd0207498

From reading the reaction from Steelers fans, they seem to be happy about it. Like I said earlier, the guy wasn't getting interviews for a reason. Makes me wonder if he finally called it quits because he wasn't getting any phone calls..

  6. The Texans have been a thorn in our side even with Manning. Yes, they are a threat. Shaub will be the starting QB next year, Yates will be on the bench. Mark it down. No way is Yates taking Shaub's job.

I agree, but Schaub is milquetoast. I'd actually prefer he start over Yates because he always chokes when the pressure is on.

  7. No, I get your point just fine. And you do not build a team to beat another team even in your division. You build a team based on a philosphy and that philosophy entails if you want to be strong offensively or defensively or balanced, then what type of players you need to do that... do you need a superstar QB or a game manager, do you need a big bruising back or well rounded back or both, big play receivers or possession receivers or combinations of all those.

You don't worry about the teams in your division until it comes time to develop the game plan against them.

I agree and disagree. I think you're right in that teams should always build around a philosophy rather than one specific team. The thing about it is, in the past, we were always the dominant team that made our divisional foes draft and build to beat us. I don't think it's a coincidence that all 3 of our division rivals have had the philosophy of a ball control, long drive, keep away offense since Manning has been here.

Just the same, if we don't change philosophies on defense to be more of a physical, agressive, run stopping unit (seeing as how we have MJD, Foster and CJ all in our division to deal with 6 times a season) something is wrong. That's one of the things that drove me most crazy about our previous regime. They never addressed the one weakness that our division rivals always seemed to try and exploit.

  8. Just so you know, the reason it was easier for the Texans to switch to a 3-4 was because Wade Philips uses a 1-gap scheme, not the traditional 2-gap scheme that most 3-4 defenses use. The 1-gap scheme is what a 4-3 defense uses.

Yeah, but are you honestly gonna hire Wade Phillips as head coach just to bring that variant of the 3-4 defense in? And as I said, you still can't make a successful shift to a 3-4 (in any form) without talent at linebacker

  9. A 3-4 defense makes sense, if Robert Mathis is not resigned

Since bill has been fired with his son, I feel that a 3-4 style defense could just likely be on the way.

    Here is why

    Position break down: D-line

If Robert Mathis is gone, Jamaal Anderson could fill the roll of a left side DE in the 3-4 as he is young (25 yr) has a good size of 289 pounds and is 6-6. Jamaal is a good run stopper de

Antonio Johnson could make the switch from DT to Right side DE in the 3-4 style at 310 pounds this might just work out as Johnson has been a big part of the run stopping game over the last 5 weeks of the season, he was making tackles everywhere. You will want your strongest DE on the right as we will be starting a very inexperience ROLB on that side.

For the NT position, this is the void I still fill is the biggest we need to fill on the roster. I feel maybe between Drake Nevis or fili Moala they may be able to play this position, but as I will say again, I still feel this is a spot that we could tackle in the draft/fa if these guys don’t pan out.

    LB

MLB Pat Angerer size is fit for this job and this is a no brainer. Some reports say we wont save much cap space cutting Gary bracket so he would have to play the other MLB role here, also Gary is more of a coverage guy then a pure go getter tackler like Angerer.

    ROLB

2010 First round pick……. Jerry Hughes- Jerry better be ready to step up and play like a true first round pick. It is said that jerry was always has been a better stand up type of pass rusher. So Fans and the colts are going to expected him to produces.

    LOLB

Dwight Freeney. It will take the right coaching staff and training to get this done, as Dwight will have to learn a whole new defence. But just image Dwight doing what Dware is doing in Dallas. Dwight might not be on the field on first down.

    FS

Bethea, this spot is already filled and does not need change

SS-> this spot needs to be filled via, the draft/fA will bob sanders being a free agent, we might be able to resign him, for vet min, if he is willing to come back here and we do not find a draft pick ready to step in and play this year. Even if it is for 1 year im sure the fans would welcome him back.

Right side CB J-powers would be our number 1 cb as he is the only solid player we have at the position.

Left Side CB…….Pat McAfee – Pat McAfee has great good footwork, and is a great tackler, He can play the ball in the air, as he uses his feet to get into position for the bat down. He cannot be any worse then the other corners we have on the team…. Ok seriously all jokes aside; this is a position that Jacob lacey would probably have to have, because we simply don’t have anything better. This is a spot we have to hit in the draft this year. It’s a must!, pick up a free agent or do something because this is our weakest position on the field

    Discuses

We don't have the talent on defense to make a shift to a 3-4. Houston was able to transition to a 3-4 so smoothly because they had the talent at linebacker already. They had Cushing, Ryans and Barwin already locked into 3 of the 4 linebacker slots, with Williams as a low-risk, high upside transition player. We have Pat Angerer and.... who else? Freeney and Mathis are both set in their ways, and to try to convert them to stand-up pass rushing OLB's this late in their career's would be a disaster. Both of them leave a lot to be desired in the area of tackling, and are unproven in coverage. Those are not ingredients for success for a 3-4 linebacker. Also, Houston used early picks to solidify the d-line and adressed the secondary through free agency. If we plan on using our 1st pick on Luck (which is what is being reported) there's no way we can realistically shift to a 3-4 without dedicating the 1st half of the draft to the shift. We have a bunch of guys who are used to playing 1 gap defense. You can't just move them around based on weight and height, like this is madden or something. An overall bad idea, in my opinion

  10. no no no! steelers fans want rid of him. not for the colts

Agreed. Like I said, this guy hasn't been interviewed since joining the Steelers for a reason, and it's not because he's content with being a coordinator. He's been a head coach before, so he's already shown the ambition of at least attempting to be a head coach. Tom Moore never once tried his hand at head coaching, so the Arians/Moore comparison is not accurate, in my opinion.

  11. If we go offfense with our head coach, one guy I'd like to see get consideration is Rob Chudzinki. He's shown an ability to adapt his playbook and gameplan to the talent he has around him. The fact that a portion of the Panthers plays came straight from Auburn's playbook shows this guy is forward thinking. Adapt your playbook to your talent, not the other way around.

  12. I don't know if this guy has been talked about, if so sorry, but I was thinking that Bruce Arians would be a great choice. He comes from one of the best fun franchises in the game and is familiar with the Colts. I think it would be a great fit.

I'll pass. This guy is more concerned with showing off his playbook than he is coordinating a solid gameplan on offense. His play calls have no continuity. Mendenhall will have a long gain one play, and instead of either feeding him the rock again or going play action, he'll go to an empty set the very next play. Makes absolutely no sense. Despite having numerous weapons at his disposal, he's failed to generate a truly elite offense. Every year Pittsburgh is amongst the leaders in total yardage, yet they always seem to end up in games where the score is 13-10. His redzone play calling is horrible. One game after his starting Qb breaks his thumb, he goes out and calls a gameplan against SF that has Big Ben throwing the ball nearly 50 times. Yeah, that's smart. It's as if Rashard Mendenhall doesn't even exist in his head.

There's a reason this guy has been the coordinator for Pitt the last 3-4 years and hasn't been interviewed for a head coaching job once since then. Let's keep it that way.
