Didn’t our bad prevent defense just give up 7 points. The other 7 came from a special teams error. And the defense had 4 sacks and three turnovers.
So how was our defense bad? How were they enabling?
I think the frustration comes from allowing two 3rd and forever to be converted to 1st downs. But the defense definitely had a great game compared to last week.

Good:
Minshew played his best game of the year. He was smart, no turnovers and threw the Steelers out of the crowd the line run defense which was key for what was to come.
Fries and Freeland. They deserve the game ball. They have found something running behind them. They lead the Colts to 170 yards rushing and a soul crushing nine minute drive on their backs.
Sermon and Goodson. You never know when your time will come but they made the most of it.
The front seven on defense. Four sacks, only gave up 74 yards rushing and forced three turnovers. The tacking was also MUCH better today.
The safeties. Both Blackmon and Cross had picks today.
The bad
The corners. Not a good day for Jones or Brents. Not unexpected with Brents coming back after that long of a layoff.
special teams. Strange early attempts on kickoffs to give the Steelers decent field position, gave up a blocked punt, and Gay. I think Gay is just in a funk and thinking too much. All kickers go through that times. I wouldn’t get too worked up about it yet.
Drops. Too many and two dropped TDs. You can’t do that when you are trying to make the playoffs.
Moss. Not his play. The injury. The word was it’s the same arm he broke earlier this year.
Freeland in pass protection: gotta give the man help if he continues to play. He’s really struggling on his own out there in pass pro.
Ugly
The hit on Pittman. That was dirty and exactly what the NFL has been trying to eliminate. That guy needs to be suspended. Pittman very lucky he got up and wasn’t knocked out. Also he gets an extra day with the protocol. Not sure if it will make a difference or not but take what you can get.I think the corners played OK. They enabled some coverage sacks and I think the Steeelers had less than 100 yards. They gave up 1 TD, but Brents did ok for just returning from injury. Remember how Grover looked on his debut last week? I expect a better game from Brents next week.

I really really felt we were out of this game in the first quarter…I had given up all hope. I am glad I was proven wrong here. Glad our team fought back and got the win!
Colts have been like this ALL year. I've gotten used to it.

Welcome, Steichen and the young Colts, to your first "playoff" win, essentially. As long as we keep winning, we control our own destiny!

They got down there GOING for it....
The decision to go for it might have been questionable, but ultimately the execution failed (dropped pass). I don't blame him going for it either.

Now would be a great time for a game wrecking sack but that only happens to the Colts. The Steelers will probably have a 98 TD drive to end the half. That’s what happens to the Colts.

Why aren't we throwing a TD to Pierce or Downs....arg!!!!

I love these 2 back sets!!!

Oh definitely. Someone got burned.
I'd also like to see some press once in awhile. Screw up that route.

Their guy #11 had a good block on him. Don’t know what he could’ve done different.
Should a different defender pick him up in that situation? He walked in untouched.

Was that on Jones?

It was super high dude. Seriously had to jump about as high as he is able to.
Throw wasn't perfect, but it was catchable.

It was a really really bad throw by though
No it wasn't. Pittman was looking ahead before securing the catch. That was a drop.

Wow, what an AMAZING play to score the third TD against Minnesota. If Cincy can't keep him I'd take that guy.

My question is whether you think that the team's lack of wins is due to a shortcoming of Herbert's. If so, I wonder what those shortcomings are.
If not, is it reasonable to hold the lack of wins over Herbert?
The Chargers do have good receivers, and generally speaking the offense has been productive. I saw a stat earlier this season that the Chargers were top five-ish in yardage and points over the last three seasons. But the defense was top five-ish in yardage and points given up. There are games where the Chargers offense goes and scores late in the game, then the defense promptly gives up the lead, so the offense has to go try to score again. Then the postgame discourse is about how the offense came up short.
Speaking of the defense, they have good players on paper. Until recently, Khalil Mack wasn't very productive. And Bosa is seemingly always hurt. And however we feel about the defensive personnel, the results aren't good.
And then there's the coach, and his failures are well chronicled.
With all of this going on, it's surprising to me that people continue to "evaluate" Herbert on the basis of whether or not the Chargers are winning games. The offense is productive (this season, not as much -- Herbert has been hurt multiple times, Ekeler was hurt, the OL seems to be falling apart), the defense is not productive, the coach has a history of making big mistakes in crucial situations... and the conclusion is that the QB isn't that good?
Again, I watch the Chargers often. Herbert has all the tools. He's made all the plays. I think there's another level he can reach when it comes to game management, but I don't think he's coming up short in any area. I will acknowledge that he's not been perfect in some games this year. Some missed throws, and some opportunities to make plays late in games, and they haven't gotten it done. I don't think Herbert is the problem. To the contrary, I think he's one of the only things that organization has going for it.
That may be a fair assessment. As I've stated, I've only watched a small sample size.

I disagree. He is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
What don't you like about him?
Do you feel he is elite? If so, what makes you say so? He's not even top 10 in passing yds, and is about 8 in TDs.

Besides this, and team record, is there a real criticism of him as a player? Is there an area where he comes up short?
All I hear is abstract stuff, with little acknowledgment of the circumstances. I watch the dude play all the time. I don't know what "it factor" a QB is supposed to have that he doesn't display.
On paper, does his team have more talent than the Colts? I believe they have some elite WRs, elite DE, and probably won't even make the playoffs this year. I do acknowledge he is in a tough division, but if he's so great, why aren't they winning more? Is that a different topic?

He's a rookie taking his lumps. He occasionally makes some good plays in run defense though. Doesn't help he's missed so much time. I feel he'll get better next year. We'll see though. It took Rock Ya-Sin 3 years I think.
