  1. I think too many here are forgetting how many people will need new contracts next season. We have priority in Mathis and Wayne then we have garçon. Now for others guys like Anderson and brayton who have seemingly helped that run defense, they will want more money next year one would think. This team needs to get one of these young cb's to pan out to allow us more flexibility in the draft. Don't just assume this is going to be the same improved defense next season because we have some players to resign first.

The Defense as a group can't be much worse than recent years. If we can come out of this with an average defense and average runnning game, we'll be improved. Again, assuming we get a healty Peyton back next year.

  2. Yeah that was 2009...but I remember 2007 well. It still stings that we had a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter only to let it slip away. It was a hugely hyped game as both teams were undefeated and the Colts were coming off the Super Bowl win. we had them almost buried until Brady started bombing it to Moss late....it would be the toughest test they had that season until the Ravens had them beat but then Rex Ryan saved their season by calling a dumb timeout...giving the Pats another shot (see? other coaches call dumb timeouts too)

I remember that vividly. I was so pulling for the Ravens to win (don't do that often).

  3. Part Of A Stampede Blue Article

After the Colts' opening day blow out loss to the Texans, a friend texted me saying

"They should retroactively award Peyton 4 more MVP awards."

Following another ugly loss, this time to Cleveland, and it's obvious Manning would be more than deserving. No offense to Tom Brady,

but no one impacts a game and a team more than Manning.

What separates Manning from his peers?

While other quarterbacks are known for their big arms and explosive offenses, Manning has elevated himself from other elite qb's by being dead on accurate and efficient. Don't get me wrong, Peyton still has a 'laser rocket arm' (at least he used to), but it is Manning's incredible precision and efficiency that make him one of the greatest quarterbacks (if not the greatest) to ever play the game.

No where is that more evident than on third down conversions. Since 2002 the Colts have ranked in the 10 top in 3rd down conversion every year, leading the category from 2005-2009. Not surprisingly the Colts won 10 games each year during that stretch and were the winningest team in the history of any decade during the 2000's. Again, not surprisingly, in 2006 - the year the Colts won the Super Bowl - Indianapolis converted a ridiculous 56.2 percent of its 3rd downs during the regular season and led all postseason teams with a 46.9 conversion rate in the playoffs.

Another category that has separated good quarterbacks and teams from Super Bowl contenders is red zone scoring efficiency. Once again, Indianapolis leads the way. According to teamrankings.com, only twice in the past decade have the Colts failed to finish in the top 10 in red zone efficiency. In 2010, the Colts scored a remarkable 66.7 percent of the possessions they had inside the 20.

This year without Manning, the Colts have regressed considerably in both departments. So much so, that the Colts' red zone offense is just painful to witness.

It's like watching the class nerd try to pick up the hot high school cheerleader. You want him to succeed, but know he's ultimately not going to score and then feel sorry for him when he fails.

Currently the Colts rank 29th in the league in red zone scoring at 33 percent and tied for 24th in 3rd down conversations at 21.7 percent.

So how did Peyton keep the Colts clicking when it mattered most? And what can the Colts do to get back on track until he returns?

Unfortunately for the Colts, a lot of their success on third down and in the red zone isn't transferable. Peyton's sheer brilliance was to thank for such gaudy numbers.

And while we obviously can't know for sure, much of Peyton's ability to lead the Colts seemed to hinge around the fact that he enjoyed the challenge and the pressure of coming through in the clutch.

One reason for the Colt's high 3rd down success rate was that Peyton was one of the best quarterbacks at setting up a defense. The first two downs were a chance for Peyton to read the coverages and then react on third down accordingly. Once the defense was in his pocket, he'd go to work

Replacing Manning would be a tall order even for Tom Brady. But if the Colts hope to have even the slightest chance, Indy must find a way to improve its red zone offense and third down conversion rates.

    My link

It's pretty obvious, you take Manning out and EVERYTHING drops off tremendously. Like I said in another post, there is NO quaterback that can step into the Colts' system and produce like Manning did/can. Manning is like the Albert Eistein of football. You can't teach someone to be an Eistein. Manning's brain and talent together are unparalleled.

  4. 2011 Orange Bowl MVP

    2010 Heisman Trophy Runner-up

    2010 Second-team All America

2010 Pac 10 Offensive Player of the Year

    2010 First-team All-Pac 10

    2010 Second-team Pac 10 All-Academic Team

    2009 Freshman All-America

    2009 Honorable Mention All-Pac 10

    2009 First-team Pac 10 All Academic Team

In 2010 he had a QB Rating of 170.2, 3791 total yards(school record), 32 tds(beat Elway's record of 27 at Stanford), a 70.7 completion %, and 453 rush yards(school record). 20-5 record for all games he's started in his career..

    Watch some of his highlights(

), he's a monster. Let's just say I would not mind having him on the Colts(if we didn't already have the best qb). I don't see how a team could go wrong in drafting this guy next year, almost a guaranteed 1st overall.

What makes him good for the NFL is he's 6'4, 235 and a good, quick release. He's very accurate also. He has a good presence of mind and in pocket also, and being able to run is just another advantage. He is viewed by most the best qb in college, if not the best player in college football.

If given the opportunity, we should certainly take him.

  5. Considering he nearly came out this year but was told BY Peyton to play another year. I'd say if he had the chance to take over for the one man who really helped make the biggest decision of his life to that point... he'd come out and not look back =). And you're right, he wanted his "degree + memories" as intstructed by his father and Peyton.

Did Peyton really counsel him on the decision to stay or not?

  6. I'm not so sure a "Gunslinger" wouldn't be a good idea right now. I think Collins will work out in time, but Favre might do better with in a situation with little time to become familiar with the plays. Favre isn't someone for long term, but he might work for a season that's up in the air anyway. I don't think we have cap room anyway.

  7. I'm all for bringing in another QB if the team feels it will make a difference.

I personally think Collins is as good (overall) as anyone available.

I don't think another QB (other than Brady) will make a difference.

Although another qb may be necessary before the end of the year if Collins doesn't get protection.

    We have bigger problems here.

This year ALL positions BETTER be being evaluated.

If ONE player makes THAT big of a difference then things really do need to change.

This year really makes you wonder "what if" Peyton had a better OL, or "what if" he had a better defense?

It just doesn't seem possible that he affected this many parts of the team.

My heart and gut tells me coaching. I just don't think they are prepared.

But I have no real idea of what the overall problem is.

Brady might be a little better jumping in to the Colts system (with only 2-3 weeks of practice), but any QB would need more time to improve. I don't think ANYONE could run the Colts game as Manning does, not even Brady. I'm not saying Brady isn't good, I just don't think he or anyone can run the Colts game as Manning has.

  8. Poor running game? Have you been watching the games this season? Our running game is much better this year than it has been in quite a while. Both Addai and Carter are running great so far. I don't know what you're talking about

The running game is better. Hopefully this will cary over to next season when Peyton comes back.

  9. The speculation is really crazy. Im going to take the colts organization at their word for now and hiope the Man is back by Jacksonville or right after the bye.

I wouldn't count on him coming back this season, especially if we have a losing record. I think it would be best for him to recover 100% and come back next season.

  10. Will someone please start a new topic asking my question above? I would, but I can't...

Disregard previous posts. I could barely here it (I backed it up again) but Eric Yutzy said "Well, if Peyton Manning is a no go...". It was barely audible. Now I can go to sleep. :dancing:

  11. Since I can't start a new topic (don't remember my old user name and password so I'm a new user...again), I'm going to post here as it's related to Manning and Collins. I just heard on WTHR Channel 13 Inside the Huddle "Peyton Manning is a no go, it will be Kerry Collins leading the Colts week 1" along with the first part of this quote they talk about Collins' deal (money) that's the topic of this post. Can anyone confirm this? I didn't see a post anywhere about what I just heard. I backed the program up a few times to make sure I heard it correctly. What I quoted is exactly what they said.
