Only time will tell.  Jacoby finally has his shot to earn that elusive title “starting NFL quarterback” (he’s only been an interim starter to this point).  So the ball’s in his court.

But what would you have Ballard do if neither Jacoby nor the other two on our roster prove to be up to the task?  Just wait until we’re lucky enough to strike gold in the draft?

Nobody does that.  And the Colts won’t either.  No, they’ll look at upgrading through trades and FAs.

I’m not endorsing Eli, BTW.  I’m not endorsing anybody in particular.  I’m just saying that it’s not unlikely that we’ll find ourselves in that position.

But here’s to hoping that Brissett (or Kelly, or Walker) pans out.

There is no one available that we could get short-term (that we know of) that would be worth trading for. Eli Manning makes no sense. He's barely an upgrade over Brissett if he is at all and is old and doesn't know the playbook (and yes I realize you aren't advocating for him). If Brissett and Kelly both crash and burn this season you just ride it out to the draft next year when you can either get a great draft pick or really explore trading for someone that maybe just needs a change of scenery and could at least be very good if not elite (maybe a Derek Carr?). Right now those don't seem to be on the radar so I think you stick with what you got and hope for the best.

Like you, here's to hoping Brissett (and/or Kelly) pans out and the issue is moot.

  2. I am interested to see what happens at the QB position. It is Brissett's to lose - but I think Kelly is going to push him because sadly I expect JB to be underwhelming when it is all said and done. Hope I am wrong.

However, even is JB plays well I think sneaking into the playoffs is the absolute ceiling. But yes with zero expectations comes a sense of relief.

  3. I think he might be slightly better than Brissett is right now. Not enough for this to be worth doing and giving something up for a guy who is right at the very end of his career, however. Not to mention he would not know the playbook.

Roll with Brissett. If he is underwhelming see what Kelly has. If Kelly is underwhelming then draft a QB this upcoming draft. Eli would be nothing but a "feel good" story of a Manning being back in Lucas Oil to help those nostalgic people cope with Luck checking out.

It is one of those things that is dumb enough I won't be shocked if the Colts do it though.

  4. Houston is the clear front runner because they have the best QB and best WR group. Defense has aged somewhat but is still very solid. Watson isn't elite but I would say he's very good. He has had some injury issues himself though.

I would put Jags next given they added Foles and you would expect their D to have a bounce back year from 2017-18 when they were so dominant.

I would say I think we are better than Tennessee for the #3 spot.

  5. Mahomes had an outstanding year last year in his first full year of starting. We need to see how he does this year with a full year of tape out here.

Hard to argue with the season he had last year. But honestly would be surprised if he puts that up again this year - not that I don't think he will still have a good season. I, for one, am not ready to concede he is better than Luck just off of last year, although I think he is very good bare minimum.

  6. As an avid Spartan fan I found it humorous how everyone was dogging my boy Khari Willis. Can't wait for him to prove everyone wrong. He is one of those guys that is always in the right place at the right time and was the heart and soul of one of the best defenses (not named Bama or Clemson) in the nation last year in the college ranks.

Won't be shocked when he is starting by the end of the season next year.

fair enough, let me ask you this...the colts win 2 SB's with McCjheater, and every other fan base says, yeah, but they must have cheated, they have McDaniels"..you gonna be OK with that? Im not....I expect the colts to hold themselves to a higher standard as they have in past seasons.

So they win two SBs with McDaniels and some other fans of other teams have a suspicion the Colts maybe, possibly, could have cheated to do it? Sign me up!!

  8. Assuming every roster is completely healthy (this is mostly about Luck and Watson though), I agree with others the Titans are definitely in last. I think the other three almost become a toss-up. Jacksonville has the best roster outside of QB, Houston has probably the next best roster with the second-best quarterback, Colts have best QB but the least talented roster otherwise of these three teams. Hard to really put one over the other.

  9. Can a contract be signed by McDaniels prior to NE's playoff run ending so that he is locked up and can't be flirting with other teams (or deciding to stay put)? If not, this would seem to be a very risky move on Ballard's part to take McDaniels at his word that he wants to come coach here and having to wait until after NE is out of the playoffs. NE is more than likely going to be at least in the AFCCG or even the SB. By that point, if he got cold feet or went elsewhere the Colts would be in a very tough spot coaching-wise.

I think McDaniels is probably the best candidate out there so I am all for him being the HC, but I also hope we aren't putting all of our eggs in that basket unless he is guaranteed to be here in the future.

  10. Pagano has more than earned being fired at this point. Some improvement on defense is not enough to save his job. The number of in-game coaching blunders and blown leads in just this year alone are enough for him to be shown the door in light of the last few years of the team fizzling. Sure, bad drafting and Luck's injury status have made things more difficult, but the aforementioned things are independent of that. Those are directly attributable to the HC and shouldn't happen.

IMO, only way Pagano is back is if he somehow gets the Colts into the playoffs this year, which is looking less and less likely. If not, I think Colts have to make a change at this juncture.

  11. Can't believe how obsessed people are getting with being okay with trading Hilton. The roster outside of him, Luck, and a few others is completely devoid of talent, but we are still willing to get rid of him? That'd be a great move!

And also, people already getting on Ballard about the 2017 draft class -- most picks below the 3rd round typically are not going to be difference makers. Not sure why people are being hard on him about rounds 4 and later. The only one you can MAYBE give Ballard some flack on is Basham. Basham so far does not look that great, but he is transitioning from a MAC school to the NFL. It is already a major jump from a Power 5 school to NFL, let alone a mid-major. Let's give it some time before we automatically write him off halfway through his rookie season.

  12. I'll join the others asking for Jim Bob Cooter. Not only does he have a great name, but the guy has done great things in Detroit the last few seasons despite not having a plethora of talent on that side of the ball. It is a pass-friendly offense that I think Luck would be great in.

Now I would love Harbaugh too, but he isn't leaving Michigan UNLESS they lose to Ohio State again this year. That would mean he was 1-5 versus MSU and OSU since he has gone to Michigan with zero Big 10 titles much less national championships. I think he will be ready to come back to the NFL at that point.

  13. Does the NFL still have the rule about no alternate helmets? I remember teams like the Steelers (yellow helmets) and Pats (white helmets with the "old" Patriot logo) used to wear alternate helmets and I feel like I heard the NFL nixed that, hence why you never see them wearing these anymore. I feel like the Packers can get away with it when they wear their ugly blue unis because they just rip off the Green Bay "G" on the helmet -- it is still the same helmet. If Colts switched to a blue helmet for away games it seems like they may have to always wear the blue helmet if this rule is still in play.

  14. I actually think the Colts just switching with Miami would make the most sense. In the OP, you don't want to displace the Ravens since you would lose the Pitt-Bal rivalry, although geographically that division makes the most sense for the Colts. But the AFC East still works better for the Colts than the South. Plus, the Colts don't really have any big time rivalries in the South, and I am unaware of the Dolphins being some major rival for the Pats, Bill, or Jets. The Colts are actually a rival with the Pats, so if anything a rivalry is gained for more TV by this move. Plus, the Dolphins would be a more natural rival with the Jags since they are both in Florida.

I highly doubt that if we come out slinging it in the 2nd half and we lost everyone here would be praising Pagano.  In fact I bet that everyone would be calling for his head. He protected his backup QB and kept the clock running.  That is literally how you win games when you have a lead.

I'm no Pagano supporter by any means but this is the time when we are 2 TD's up on a weaker team that you give the oline boys and RB's a chance to man up and close the game out.  You protect your backup QB and have real game time experience to improve the run game.

I had little issue with the call for a conservative approach.  I do have issue that the oline and RB's didn't rise up to the challenge to put someone away.  You are supposed to rise up to the situation.

I think some people forget this is a backup here not Luck.  Just think if he goes out there and throws 3 picks like Kizer did last week and the boo birds start howling.  Yea not the situation I want my young promising backup QB to be in.

I don't think most people were against getting more conservative in the 2nd half with a three-TD lead. What most took umbrage with was the horrible play-calling. There are other run plays besides handing the ball off straight up the middle, and you can still throw short, safe passes that are conservative but are effective against a defense that is being overly aggressive due to being down as the Browns were. Neither of those things happened. It was Gore running into a pile of linemen and linebackers right up the middle almost every 1st and 2nd down in the 2nd half. It was frustrating to watch.

it is now being reported that luck and the colts are growing further apart. do you blame andrew ?  would you want to line up under center for a rah rah not very good coach, who is clueless.  run, run, sack punt. you know what give andrew the reins. chud see ya. pagan see ya!  go get a good coach and OC that luck likes. let him control things on the field. and if harbaugh is his guy? MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!

Luck is only in the second year of a six year deal, and it is more than likely that Pagano is gone after this season. Of course Luck is getting tired of the same thing each year. So is everyone else on the team and all of the fans. There will be change. Pagano will be gone, Luck will probably get to have a small amount of input into who the next coach is, and everyone will move foward. However, Luck's ability to get out of his contract is nil, and quite frankly it doesn't matter if he doesn't want to play for the Colts. He isn't going anywhere -- this isn't the NBA.

He isn't the first QB who will be ready for a HC change. It's happened here in Indy before.

  17. From 2012 to today, can we really say the team as a whole has made progress? About the only thing you can say is that two of our core players in Luck and Hilton have gotten experience, some of it in the playoffs. This is offset by Luck's injury history that has accumulated over the past few seasons and horrible roster management. It was just two years ago that we were thinking the Colts were ready to take the next step after their AFC Championship appearance, but it seems like things have completely unraveled at this point. Most of the players that we had on that AFC Championship team are gone now outside of our core offensive players.

We're only one game into the season, so perhaps this is premature, but after the abomination that was the Rams opener, it is hard not to be pessimistic and say we are no better than we were at the start of the 2012 season. Maybe even worse -- because this defense clearly isn't as good as it was then (not that it was great in '12). Most pundits think the Colts roster, outside of Luck, may be the worst in football -- worse than the tanking Jets. Luck will be on the other side of 30 by the time we are ready to compete for a Super Bowl again it would appear.

If the ultimate goal is to win a Super Bowl, it appears that the last five years essentially went nowhere. I hope I am wrong and the defense just had a very bad game in the opener and Luck can come back and salvage this season. It is not too late. I'm just feeling pretty negative along with everyone else after that game on Sunday.

  18. I think expecting to win the AFC South at this point is on the extreme side of optimistic. Impossible? No. But not likely. Outside of the QB position, every single team in the South has a better roster at this point. If Luck doesn't play we are far outgunned period.

Bortles seemed to figure out that his team is good enough that as long as he doesn't turn it over they have a shot to win. If he plays TO free ball I actually like their chances this year despite being the doormat for the past 6-7 years.

Actually, the problem has always been a QB, that even on quick throws, he has gotten rid of the ball late so the defenders have time to get a step back after our receivers made their cut.  And Lucky constantly threw the ___ ball to the back shoulder and at or above the shoulder pads. What the ...! Didn`t you get sick of seeing that .... year after year from this once in 25 year guy?
Knowing he sucked at the quick game he Wanted/Needed to wait for the pass catchers to come out of the break, still throwing the ball late and giving a step back to defenders. Yes he needed that strong arm.
About half way through year 4 he started bringing the ball down, thank goodness for the health of our receivers,

and he actually started leading his receivers Sometimes.
So now his body has been battered into the turf ( Hey, nice hit) and who knows how his shoulder and the rest of his upper torso will hold up to the battering still to come.
BTW, Dorsett ran open many times crossing Lucky`s face and on most of the throws he couldn't come within 3 feet of an on the $$ pass to him.
I have no reason to believe he will ever become a quick thinking, creative throwing, on the $$$ accurate passer in the short game. And YES i hope he gets great at it.
And if you take away him running like he has done in the past to save the day, well, it is going to be a Great challenge for Lucky to become a SB Winner. Elwayesque    Go Lucky! Go Colts!

Yes, "Lucky" is slow and dumb. Surprised he can even stay upright without tripping over his own two feet. If anything this has definitely exposed Stanford as a fraud of an institution of higher learning. Why do we keep him around anyway? We have a short-throwing Tolzien after all who is much better.

I respect BB and Brady. Their HOFers, but when you win time and time again and you hardly lose and you're always there at the end, you want some kind of moral victory. Also didn't help for 9 months that all we heard of dynasty this and 19-0 that.

I agree. Whenever the media starts proclaiming someone champs or a sure-fire SB participant before the season begins it definitely is obnoxious. I feel that you always get in trouble doing that for the NFL or even college football but it doesn't stop them from doing it almost every single year. It was dumb to be talking about the Pats being undefeated this year before the year even began, not because it was likely they would lose game 1 to the Chiefs, but because it is likely that they are going to have a Sunday or two where they don't play well and will lose to a less talented team. It is just how it works in the NFL.

I think the only sport where you can definitively say who the champ will be before the season begins is probably the NBA. And it is partly why that product isn't nearly as fascinating to watch for 95% of the season.

Don't care what it makes me look like, it is 100% about "Spygate, Deflategate, etc.". In a league that has gone out of its way to promote parity, the Pats are the team that somehow stays uber competitive and are also the team that keeps getting caught cheating.  Pretty easy to put two and two together.  What makes it worse for Colt fans is the realization that the Pat cheating was concurrent to our best Manning- led teams (inexplicably) losing to the Pats in the playoffs.   Can't help but wonder how many SBs the Colts were duped out of.  So, you just can't wave these scandals off with a flip of your hand...

Alright, don't put me in a position that I have to defend the Pats! Seriously though, saying that the Colts "inexplicably" lost the Pats during the Manning years is a bit of a stretch. The insinuation that the Pats were cheating in order to beat the Colts in those years would be complete speculation. It's not like they were completely devoid of any talent and the only explanation was that they were pulling shenanigans in order to win.

To be honest, I thought the whole deflategate thing was pretty silly. Especially since the Colts got blasted after a normal football was introduced but had kept it close while Brady had his preferred flat football.
