Dr. T's Annual Colts Draft Contest: 2018

Recommended Posts

Welcome once again to Dr. T's annual Colts Draft Contest for 2018! Since there are a whopping nine choices this year, the rules need to be changed again. Therefore, contestants will have three picks in the first round (A, B, and C) and two choices (A and B) for all rounds thereafter. In round one, correctly choosing choice A merits 5 points, while correctly choosing choice B or C instead will merit 4 and 3 points, respectively. In the other rounds, correctly picking an A choice in the correct round wins 4 points, while correctly picking a B choice in the correct round merits 3 points. If one of your “A” selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 2 points each, while if one of your “B” or “C” selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 1 point each. If AND ONLY IF there is no clear winner at the end of 7 rounds, the contest will be extended for ALL participants and any selection you predicted in one of the earlier rounds that is instead picked by the Colts after the draft as a collegiate free agent will count for one point each.

Make your choices in this thread by listing the round, choice A, B (or C only in round 1), for each round, with the name of the player, position and school. You may also write with each choice a little blurb explaining why you chose that person.

Your 19 selections for new Colts this year are as follows:

Round 1 - #6 A, B, C

Round 2a - #36 A, B

Round 2b - #37 A, B

Round 2c - #49 A, B

Round 3 - #67 A, B

Round 4 - #104 A, B

Round 5 - #140 A, B

Round 6 - #178 A, B

Round 7 - #221 A, B

Please be a good sport and do not just copy other contestant's selections. You can easily do some research on your own, since plenty of free draft services are available on the web. You can make changes to your selections before the contest is closed on Thursday at 7 PM CST, April 26, 2018, on the first day of the draft, but, like in taking standardized tests, many times your first guess usually is the right one!  If there is another trade BEFORE the draft starts and one or more of the picks change, we will all start over. Good luck and let the best GM win!

Hey Dr. T, I can't remember this.  If there is a trade on draft night, do the "new" picks then become null and void for everyone?  For example, say we pick up an extra 3rd rounder.  The pick we are making for the 3rd round is for our ORIGINAL pick, not the extra 3rd round pick?  But we could still get 1 point since they are a correct pick just not where we thought they would be picked?  I hope my query is clear.

If there is a trade during the draft, your picks are still your picks. So if any of your picks are chosen later or earlier, you can still get points according to the rules. However, if you think that there may be a trade on draft night in a certain round, your extra picks (B's and C in the first round, or your late round picks that are more of a gamble to hit on) can be chosen with a trade in mind. I've seen contestants choose 1st or 2nd round rated players in the 7th round so that they can get points if something crazy like a trade happens early in the draft.

The only way you can get "new" picks (and a chance to change all of your picks for that matter) is ONLY when there is a trade involving the Colts BEFORE the draft. If that happens, you must still get all of your picks finalized before the deadline (when the draft actually starts). Remember, you can also change your picks at any time (even if there is not a trade), but again this must be done BEFORE the draft starts.

I think that this draft is going to be one of the most wild ones I've ever seen!!  :omg:  :fear::Yikes:

Did you at least get a t-shirt commemorating your success AZC or is this strictly a bragging rights thing alone? I always want know what the primary incentive is. What's the ultimate prize for the lone victor?

Good like defending your title I guess.

Not really my cup of tea. Good luck to all the competitors...

I am NO expert of any kind, but it's fun.  And I got lucky last year, I realize that.  Which means this year I probably won't get one single pick right.  Isn't that the way it works?

No prize, just bragging rights, unless you consider that a prize!  LOL

You should consider it Southwest.  Don't cost nuthin.

Yeah, that is usually how the law of averages usually works my friend. At the mountaintop one yr in the basement the next. Still, just pulling it off once is impressive though. I could never do that if my life depended on it.

My kind of humor man. [What I highlighted in red.] I like you so, I let my better judgement prevail there. Some prize you are. lmao I kid; I kid.

Thanks for the invitation to participate this yr though. The price is right as you suggest, but draft research doesn't trip my trigger at all. I'll pass. Good luck & go shock the forum again AZC.

@stitches did you see PFF's latest mock draft had us taking Josh Jackson at #6!?!? :omg:

Blurb from them:

6. Indianapolis Colts (from New York Jets)

Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa

As fun as Saquon Barkley promises to be, this pick was really one of three names: Quenton Nelson (the preference), Derwin James and Jackson. So by the time the pick arrived, it wasn’t really a choice so much as a last-man-standing. – Daniel Kelley, @danieltkelley

Barkley goes next pick to Bucs.

Also then have us taking another corner (Mike Hughes) with #36, with Arden Key after that.

Yes, I don't like the value, but I love the fit and I like the player. He's probably the best fitting CB in this class for what we want to run and he's a ballhawk which Ballard seems to value. I still don't think picking a zone corner at 6 is great allocation of resources. I also think I might pick Minkah ahead of him to play the same CB position but with the possibility to be used in other situations as well if required.

Last year, I woefully overthought this thing, and stunk the place up. Using flawed logic like if they take "A" in round 1 then that changes the positional "A" for round 2 etc. Not this year, using Draft Tek's big board, I went to whatever #' pick we had and chose position of need in a 10 pick radius for each pick, and that was that.....good luck everyone.

    • I just thought I would take this opportunity to brag a bit about the fact that I had the opportunity to chat with Peyton at the Masters last week for about 5 minutes.  Truly a bucket list experience and I must say, he has the Southern Hospitality that one might expect but wow- did not expect to run into him and it was quite the experience.  It just had to be the one place left on earth where cell phones are banned, so no picture opportunity unfortunately.   I told Peyton that my first Colts experience was riding to Buffalo in a blizzard when the Colts were 14-0 and they benched him only to lose that game. I said thanks for my first Colts experience being one where he was riding the pine.  He laughed, apologized to me and said that if it was up to him he would have been checking down in that snow storm for 4 quarters.  He thanked me for the support, and was asking me a bit about myself, where I am from, etc.  Quite the gentleman! I think it was obligatory for him to be nice to patrons while he was wearing his Green Jacket, but none the less....a great experience meeting a childhood hero. Lynn Swann walked up to us while we were talking and shook Peyton's hand.  I joked that now was the perfect time for a 10 yard slant- and then slid into the bushes like Homer Simpson with humility.    Unforgettable experience everyone!   Would love to hear some of your Peyton stories from over the years, since it is a bit of a slow time of year before the draft! Let it fly Colts fans
    • I agree.  I think this is another one of those over-hyped QB classes that will probably never perform to the level of the hype. But -- teams still need a quarterback.  And will convince themselves that that must take one of these quarterbacks.  That it's the only solution to their problem.  If I was forced to choose, I would probably go with Heisman winner Jayden Daniels.  I'm concerned that Caleb Williams may have some personality issues to go with his lack of measurables, even though he shows strong ability to improvise.  Drake Maye has the measurables, but I have questions regarding the level of opposition playing at UNC.  It's not the same as playing the equivalent of the Crimson Tide every single week.  JJ McCarthy is "good".  And he's been successful.  He led his team to a BCS championship.  And?  I see him in the same mold as AJ McCarron.  Supremely successful in college, but not good enough to be The Guy in the pros.
    • Right. KC was also a perennial playoff team prior to Mahomes taking over. The Colts are a fringe playoff team at best, until we see if AR can lift the roster.    And to your point, Veach took over the summer before Mahomes’ rookie year. Hard to compare how KC’s FO approach with Dorsey at GM (for several years) vs. when Veach took over. It seems like Ballard has been more like Dorsey and Veach might just operate differently from both of them.    If Ballard wanted to follow the Veach KC model, he sure waited a long time to do it once Luck retired.
    • DeFo was an aggressive move.   But I wouldn’t classify Wentz or Ryan as aggressive moves. Getting Stafford would have been an aggressive move at QB. Wentz was cheaper and PHI was looking to dump him. They didn’t even budge from their initial offer to PHI  And Ryan sort of fell in their laps after they dumped Wentz.
    • I think most important option is missing in the poll : No One.   I think it's a fairly average QB class that it's okay to not like anybody enough to draft him. There's no one QB that Wows you with their pocket passing Caliber or pure athletic traits or good combination of both. It's like a tweener class of all those abilities, having lop-sided combination of above said skills.    And, this poll, rather than forcing to pick one QB, needed that extra option to express staying away from this QB class.
