Oh man. You guys that are banking on him randomly being good in a zone shame despite him sucking the big one in Man are a special kind of Optimistic lol

or maybe you're putting the words banking In peoples mouths and being negative like always. Nobody's projecting him to start. Just stating what is likely the better scheme fit. I know its hard for you to do much more than be a dissenter. Can you tell us why hes here if he truly sucks so bad? Obviously they see a use for him somewhere as a reserve or something.

Nothing should be based on what fans feel

Exactly, those in charge of organizing everything at Lucas Oil Stadium for spectators on game day can take "fans opinions" into account when trying to maximize the "Gameday Experience"...

But any GM losing sleep over fan opinion probably won't be a GM very long, or so goes the cliche that some seem to forget...

Still nightmares of it when I was coaching

Philip Gaines is the guy I remember Peyton picking on along with that Fleming CB guy with the Chiefs when Peyton was playing for the Broncos in 2014. They were mainly avoiding Marcus Peters' side and picking on whoever was on the other side.

Can someone tell me who was the Chiefs CB that fought for the ball vs Moncrief to come up with an INT vs Luck when the Chiefs came here to LOS? That was the game Nick Foles filled in for Alex Smith.

Does anyone remember?

I think you have your years mixed up. Are you thinking of Sean Smith and not Peters?

Yep, you are right. It was 2015, not 2014. :)

The game where Peyton threw a pick six to Marcus Peters but came back to send the game to OT on Thursday Night Football.

However, Gaines, recently has been abused by QBs, so I am not sure what Ballard sees in him based on form lately.

I don't know what he sees either. He was there when they drafted him...but I don't really see anything from the recent seasons (plural) that would make him a desirable target...at least not his early in FA. The Chiefs drafted 6 CBs in the three years Ballard was there. Maybe he is a numbers guy...and we will see him bring in 2-3 guys to fill one spot.

Yeah, not sure about this one. Chiefs fans were basically mocking him on the way out.

I swear if we sign this guy and let Melvin walk I’m going to extremely upset!!!

CB put some cash out there for good players already. U low ball people and maybe that’s why we don’t get any big names wanting to come ... they know your cheap!

Chiefs fans hate him. He has a low PFF score. No thanks.

Just a sampling of Chief fans comments shortly after his release...

"I believe most of us remember the Steelers game where Gaines had an easy INT but tipped it to Brown for a TD. That's sums up Gaines career in KC.'

"Finally!! One move from the staff (Reid or Veach) that is very very good; letting a player go without fans upset or questioning why they did it."

"A year late."

"Possibly two. And actually the chiefs got fooled. Dorsey should never have picked him to begin with. Five wasted years at the position."

"Arena Football League welcomes Phillip Gaines."

Not very reassuring to say the least. We look like free agency bottom feeders even hosting this guy.  You would think the Colts had  $2 of cap space.

$2 plus 70mil. It really has become a bad joke with such approach so far. Every hole cannot be filled in the draft. The left overs from FA are not worth over paying. The only one on way to visit and who is actually good, may be Pugh.

Well Its official Melvin signed with the raiders .... CB you * .... didn’t think our GM situation could go from horrible at throwing money around at old people to having a cheapskate lowball players and sign depth mediocre young guys.

How quickly we forget what most people thought of Melvin when he first joined the Colts! Go back and look at some of the comments. You know the guy that got relentlessly burnt by Tom Brady....

This team defensively right now has more talent on it than when Tony Dungy took over in the first one maybe two years. After CB gets done bringing in and signing his targets, plus a strong draft I believe you guys will feel better. Its not as far off as it looks.Gaines I'm sure wouldn't be the starter. Competition piece just like Mingo and Hunt were last year.

Agreed on Pugh.  If we sign him then I can at least feel content about something the Colts are doing.

If signed Gaines would potentially only be an injury away from starting.  And with our injury plagued luck, it's a good bet that happens at some point next season.

Are Chief fans much smarter than the Colts fans that mocked Patrick Robinson and Tim Jennings on their way out?

Robinson played out of position here. I didn't expect him to go and ball out with the Eagles, but it was well-known that he was better as a slot corner.

Tim Jennings, yeah. That one holds up.

I didn’t put any words in anyone’s mouths.  I was very specific in that I said “Those banking on him being better” Do you include yourself in that group?

im not dissenting. I don’t even care about this upcoming Colts Season. This is the year of the World Cup and my first year of Vet School. I have much bigger worries lol. Ballard can be stingy or carefree in his spending as long as he gets good people. But Gaines succccks

Jennings was not a fit in the Colts defense when he was here.

Gaines sucks....but, he'll be cheap so Ballard will probably sign the scrub. Seems to be all about the bejamins with Ballard. Pay below average players average money but never pay top dollor for above average players.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, the Gaines I wanted (E.J. Gaines) signed with the Browns. The Browns do not have a shortage of talent with all their signings. Now, all the pressure is on Hue Jackson to deliver at least 4 wins, IMO, 1 win per quarter. Anything less, he is gone.

I think with Dorsey as the new GM and Tyrod Taylor as the new QB, and all the talent they will draft soon,  I think the minimum acceptable for wins would be in the 6-7 range.   I think 4 wins will get Jackson fired.

Hue Jackson is such a bad coach that four wins with a reasonably talented roster would be looked at as a success. I guess that’s what you expect from the team that had a parade for going 0-16.

You cant look at Jacksons record as a measuring stick as to what kind of coach he is.

For two years the Browns have tanked with all the movements they have made. Trading, cutting and setting up this years draft is something they been working on for two years.

I have a feeling the days of ragging on the Browns are coming to an end. For one thing Dorsey knows how to build a team and he also knows how to draft.

IMO they will win more than 4 games this season. I say 8-8 or 9-7.  Next year they will contend for that division.

Why do you put so much value into a few posts from people you dont know?

He stayed with the same team for 5 years in a league where people get cut at the drop of a hat. That means a lot more to me than a few opinions.

    • I knew I had a favorite last year, but I thought I would be good with whoever the Colts picked... and this was until the odds for the Colts picking Levis hit -4000 or something of the sort about half an hour before the draft and my heart completely dropped. In a way I'm happy the odds-makers completely missed on this one... it showed me how I really felt about those players and made me even more appreciative for us drafting Richardson an hour later.    So... you would be good with any of them... but who do you REALLY want?    On your question... if I had to guess, most Colts fans haven't watched this QB draft extensively. I know I haven't. So his statistical profile doesn't scream 1st rounder so... possibly why not many people really like him.
    • My sleepers: (meaning, the kind of players coaches would like to have, more than what consensus big board gives credit to them. Some of them might need couple of years to attain their high potential, if drafted into suitable coaching environment, so a lot depends on that. Some of them have injury concerns too).   Most of them are high IQ players or high-effort, high-motor players - two traits I look for from the Drafted players, list is long but I like these guys.. gonna be interesting to see where they land and how it works out for them in long run.    Payton Wilson, LB, NC State Caelen Carson, CB, Wake Forest Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale Maason Smith, IDL, LSU Christian Mahogany, OG, Boston College Max Melton, CB, Rutgers Zak Zinter, OG, Michigan Bucky Irving, RB, Oregon Khyree Jackson, CB Oregon Dylan McMahon, C, NC State (good fit for Browns)  Tykee Smith, SAF, Georgia Ainias Smith, WR, Texas A&M Cam Hart, CB, Notre Dame Michael Barrett, LB Michigan Malachi Corley, WR, Western Kentucky Beaux Limmer, IOL, Arkansas   Kamren Kinchens, S, Miami McKinnley Jackson, IDL, Texas A&M Kalen King, CB, Penn State Justin Eboigbe, IDL, Alabama    Jacob Cowing, WR, Arizona Beau Brade, SAF, Maryland Isaac Guerendo, RB, Louisville Jalyx Hunt, EDGE, Houston Christian (I'm hoping for day 3 Vikings pickup, as Flores could work wonders with him)  Jaheim Bell, TE, Florida State Brennan Jackson, EDGE, Washington State  Delmar Glaze, OT, Maryland Myles Cole, EDGE, Texas Tech Kristian Boyd, DT, Northern Iowa Javontae Jean-Baptiste, DL, Notre Dame Jordan Magee, LB, Temple Myles Harden, CB, South Dakota Jalen Green, EDGE, James Madison (UDFA Target prospect)  Trey Taylor, S, Air Force (UDFA prospect) Eyabi Okie-Anoma, EDGE, Charlotte Qwan'tez Stiggers, CB, Toronto  Sundiata Anderson, EDGE, Grambling State  Daequan Hardy, CB, Penn State (Special Teams, Returner)  Emani Bailey, RB, TCU   As for Vikings, I don't wanna rush to draft QB if the team isn't confident in the guys they could move up in draft range, and I'd like to just draft impact players that build the roster at this point.   Build the team, draft a franchise QB at right time, don't rush and ruin years trying to make someone work out in the NFL.
    • If you are relying upon history, does accuracy matter?  I think the reason Smith ended up at RT is because the coaches tried him there out of necessity and he played well, and stayed there due to the coaches wishes.  I don't think that FO guys had much to say about it, because Smith was in fact drafted to be a G, not the RT.  Ballard's own words after day 2 of that draft was that they drafted Smith a bit higher than they had him ranked, because he was the "last remaining starting caliber G on the board".   So it does fit that Smith was not drafted by Ballard or the FO to be a RT...in part because of the measurables and arm length.   Also directing this response to @Matthew Gilbert
    • Same. And that's because over time that level of depth eventually decays.
    • I don't think players like Davis (and especially Bryan, who I don't think will make the final 53) should impact our draft strategy at all. Not even a little bit. If we like Byron Murphy, figure out what to do with those other guys later. The other versatile guys you mention don't scratch the itch the way Murphy would be expected to -- he should be looked at as a disruptive 3T who plays there every down, not a matchup guy or passing downs guy.    If anything, maybe it's the other way around. The Colts already had a feel for the DTs in draft class and knew they wouldn't get what they want in the draft, so they addressed the position in free agency. And after this weekend, that might help people better understand the strategy at DB and WR...    The bolded really gets at the heart of it. I like Murphy, but I'm not offering him as a great player that you just have to take a chance on. But when it comes to draft strategy, I think taking the best players is the way to go. I'm directly opposed to needs-based drafting, and to passing on a really good prospect because you have backup level veterans already on the roster.
