Colts FA - no news is good news

It makes sense that the Colts are taking their time with free agents.

Maybe who they go after will depend on who they let go.

I’m kind of glad they are relying on the draft and acquiring solid FAs to fill in, instead of the other way round.

I said it on another thread but Ballard has shown he doesn't want to over pay. These big name, better free agents require big time money. He is just not willing to give them that.

I heard he offered Norwell $15 per hour with dental.

Not everything can be fixed in the draft, sometimes you need you need to pay up to get better. Unless Ballard thinks we will be picking in the top 10 again regardless

Remember when Ryan Grigson would attempt to sign all the free agents and we ended up with a bunch of dead weight and dead cap space?  Remember when Bill Polian would hardly ever sign an outside free agent (and the one time he did he got burned on Corey I'd rather get fat than play Simon)?  Which scenario yielded better fruit?

I'm perfectly fine if they take a less is more approach to free agency.

Simon was awesome his first year here..... it was after that that he lost all love for the game.

Apparently the Colts were one of the finalist to land Watkins. It was "reported" that it was between KC, IND, and Chi until they got Robinson.

I think the Colts and Ballard are trying, just the asking prices are way to high for them.

Here we go again. Missing out on everyone we were “rumored” to go after. Ya chris Ballard doesn’t want to overpay, but geez dude. We need help

well, you dont know IF we offered anything, how much we offered and what the deciding factor is.  Not every player wants to come here, so if we are slightly higher than a team he likes, that player may decide to take the slightly less offer.

Well we are drafting 3rd overall and don't appear to be willing to throw cash at people.  Neither is a recipe for attracting big names (which is fine.)

All I know is that our division gets better while we do nothing to improve ourselves

Maybe.. Maybe not. While I wanted Norwell, face the facts man, this isn't an auction.  the players ultimately decide what offer to take/sign.  You and no one else on here, is likely to ever know just how hard or how much Ballard offered or to whom.  It's entirely possible that these big names turned him down for reasons other than money. We have a lot of question marks, Luck's status, poor roster, a new coaching staff etc that may work against us somewhat.  Be patient.

exactly.

Yeah if you're not a playoff team you have to make it rain if you wanna get big name free agents and there are no rain clouds in Chris Ballard's world.

Spoiler alert, bad teams throwing huge money at a couple big name guys almost never works.  It gets fans excited in March and sells jerseys, but tends not to translate in to long term success.  (Remember when everyone was all aflutter about the Dolphins throwing more money than the GDP of some small countries as Suh?  How'd that turn out?)

I mean come on people.  Bill Polian was our GM for like 15 years, we should be used to not being major players in free agency.

Well, the cap is going up so prices will follow at every position!

You never pay an OG as much, You never draft an OG with a high draft pick....this way I honestly fear we won't fix our mess of a line an see Luck running for his career!

That is not even close to being determined yet.

1) By the end of this week, the Colts roster will be better than it is today.

2) How often does the winner of free agency actually translate to the field come the Fall?

Okay, no "big" signings yet, why?

Answer:

Would you rather play on a team going to the playoffs or just go for/ after the money?

Yes we have a ton of money available for signing big name players, but Luck and the team first need to prove they are not an 4-12 team.

Lucks is returning this season, which instantly makes our team better, and thereby indirectly more attractive for big time players, willing to take less money to play for the colts.

As of right now, only money hungering big free agent players want to sign for the colts. And Ballard dont want them on our team. He want players like sheard, simon, bostic, Hunt etc.

Players who believe they can win with us, regardless of how much money they are paid. Players who love the game and wants to play for a TEAM, not themselves.

So are we signing big time free agents, yes we are, but only those players who are all in and wants to play for the colts and whos willing to take less money.

I would have loves Norwell, Robinson and Hitchens, but then we would have ZERO money to spend on the rest.

In Ballard I trust so dont go into panic mode yet guys.

The only way he could know that is if he knows Luck isn’t playing next year either. No way we pick top 10 with him starting

Players follow the money!  And I understand that you are not going to overspend and sign 10 free agents, but you can afford to overspend on a talented guy or two by 2-3 million if you think they will help you especially if you have the kind of money available the Colts have.

I feel what you are saying but a free agent has proven he can cut it in the NFL. A draft pick can be a college star but it is a mystery if they can take their game up a level.

The Super Bowl Champ Eagles are making moves and the worst team in the last 2 years is TRYING to make moves. We are sitting back like Peyton Manning is walking into the door.

Scared money don't make none. The NFL is a casino....You can't just look at the other guys play at the poker table, you gotta sit sometimes at the big money table and play.

Just my observation and opinion of a non-football professional

Ballard said he doesn’t want to build the team through FA.

You tend to overpay for older guys and he wants to stay young.
