NFL rules on assistant coaches and how it relates to the Colts

There's been a lot of suggestions about grabbing this D.C. Or that OC from other teams, giving them a title of assistant head coach but having them be a coordinator here.

Per the NFL rules under the newest CBA: all coaches that are not the Head Coach are all considered assistants. Whether that be ball boy coach or offensive coordinator, they are on the same tier of coaching per the NFL.

The rules state that if asssistant coaches under contracts with a team, they can only be interviewed for a promotion, which the rules specifically call out as Head coach. And they can only be interviewed without being blocked for that interview by their contracted team.

Meaning: ALL the talk and speculation about stealing Toub to be our special teams coordinator or Vrabel as our D.C. And giving them the title of assistant coach CANNOT EVER happen unless either of them are fired from their contracts.

Exactly. Essentially, while under contract, it is up to that coach's team to grant or sent them the ability to make a lateral move. Seattle hasn't released Richard's, but they did grant him permission to take a lateral position.

We had our past, but I must say. You are by far one of the most knowledgeable fans here.

haha not really. I'm just a book worm. I try to research stuff I don't know. Never stop learning.

Past is the past, I don't hold grudges, I don't have that much room in my memory bank and life's too short

It may be the correct information, but citing a Reddit post as a source isn't exactly the best research.  On top of that the account that made the post has been deleted and the link the post cites doesn't take you to any type of documentation.

A few minutes on Google would prove me right... I was going to post several articles but decided on just the one since I felt it was the best at clearly explaining the rules.  But since you question it....

I can post about 30 more articles, all from main stream sources if you'd like, or you can do your own research and try to prove these articles wrong.  But I'll save you some time, you won't. The rule changed in 2009 for the 2010 off season.

I actually didn't question whether it was correct or not, I just simply stated that your choice of proof was an awful choice.

Your reasons are invalid though as at the bottom of the article, it provides a link to the NFL contract rules that downloads via PDF.

Thanks. Can Eberflus be hired before McDaniels? Just wondering. His contract expires this year. The Colts would probably wait until McDaniels is hired though.

Contracts expire after the Super Bowl, I forget the date . That said, since he is not under contract for next season, they can interview, make it official etc and Dallas can't block it or anything. But I don't think it'll technically take effect until the new league year.

Alright, thanks. I know that Dallas can't block it, which is good for the Colts. I was wondering if the Colts would make the hire official before McDaniels, but I think they wait until McDaniels is hired.

It comes up as an invalid link, so no my reasons are not invalid, the link is.  If the link worked, then I would take that as a source, because hey they have Toub as a client. Lol

Works for me. If I can figure out how to upload the PDF I saved from that link into this thread, I will but I'm getting an attachment too large message

Technically I think they could, but they won't until they make McDaniels official. They may have already signed the dude for we all know and are waiting on the McDaniels train to roll in before making the announcement
