Desir and Hairston

Desir is still young and got a pick against Ben on one of the faster and taller receivers in the league of Martavis. I think he'll develop into someone really good next year. Could start over Wilson and that's fine with me. Imagine the depth of Melvin, Desir, Wilson, and Hairston.

dnt understand the 'imagine the depth' implication. When that's literally what we have today.

Desir is the starter now and someone is going to have to take that spot away from him.  Assuming he continues to play great ball the Colts are going to want to bring both Desir and Melvin back to be our starters.  It looks like our secondary is becoming one of the teams strengths.  I guess iron sharpens iron or something like that.

Desir is someone I wanted to draft and love that we finally got him.  To me we resign him and Melvin and they become our starters.  I would not mind to grab someone like Trumaine Johnson in FA and maybe not resign someone but if we want to save money and just keep these two I am happy with that.  Wilson, in my eyes if he is not able to play his way onto the field he can be trade bait or maybe just sit as depth.  I just hope the knee was a key issue and now Desir is playing his way into a starter.

I understand they are playing fine but we should still consider we need depth as well

Desir was a high draft pick of the Browns but got lost there, he looks to be getting his confidence back

I would not say he was a high draft pick.  He was picked towards the end of the 4th round.

Guys....

Not be a Debbie downer here, but let’s not fall into this trap again. We’ve been down this road many times with players who probably aren’t in the league anymore.

While I agree about Hairston, let’s pump the breaks on Desir. He’s had a couple nice moments, but future starter is jumping the gun for him. Let’s wait and see what the rest of the season is like for Desir. There was a time last year when the OL was “fixed”. I’m all in on Hairston who has been exceptional every week but one step at a time.

How can you say they’re playing fine when our coverage is so bad. Maybe they’re giving up one or two big plays a game but that’s how you lose football games. Lol

I would say our coverage has been getting better, but when the QB has all day you are asking a lot for a CB to guard a WR for 5 or 6 seconds.  Doing this without any penalties as well.

Assuming we continue to see good solid play the rest of the way,  it feels like the quartet of Melvin, Wilson,  Desir and Wilson is a nice group to start with.

Props to Ballard and the coaching staff.

I wouldn't call the group a finished product...   we wouldn't be done...  but it's very much improved...

I agree 100% they have both been pretty good.

Hairston, has been very good, Melvin has been very solid for 1 1/2 years now not sure why he bounced around early in his career but glad we got him. Desir, I also liked him coming out of college hes playing well now, still would like to see a bigger sample size before saying he is good, but he has been so far. Wilson I like, wanted the Colts to draft him, I think hes going to be pretty good. All in all I think Colts corners the arrow finally might be pointing UP!

I know but someone in the fourth round should become a starter eventually unless your GM's last name begins with Grig....

I would say that is a bit of a reach.  You hope a 4th round pick becomes a starter but that is no guarantee at all.  I would venture to say the 4th and 5th rounds lead to more depth and rotational guys.  Players that get some good PT when others are hurt.  Important players non-the-less but not a guaranteed starter.  Grigson clearly was not great at finding or evaluating talent with the draft though.

If the Colts can get Hooker and Geathers back healthy in 2018, plus bring in another strong CB I think it's safe to say a lot of people here will be feeling good about our secondary.

Add to that one solid passrusher plus Simon and Sheard hopefully continuing to improve, and you have a strong defense.

ofcourse no guarantee, but one would hope that after months of accumulating data and watching endless film on a player a fourth rounder SHOULD be starting on your team over time

I agree you would hope that they are starting or at least playing.  Here is an article I have saved based on when we hired Ballard.  Found it interesting for the numbers and then the ties with Chiefs and Ballard was there.  Take a look just for the fun of it.  Some good knowledge and research in the numbers for draft and success rates.

Thanks.  Way to early. Hold off on Desir as a HOMER All-Pro. It's not like i didn't just watch him get smoked in his last half of FB.

That's just not the reality of how things work. Some players just don't pan out in the NFL. Look at Zach Banner, We drafted him round 4 and he was gone by the start of the season.

Never bought the O-line hype from last year.  In 6 games, I might buy in on the secondary, though.  I like what I've seen, minus Vontae

Good Read, but I am being hopeful a 4th rounder SHOULD contribute as a starter if your scouting is good.

    • I agree with the concept, but until Richardson is a complete proven entity, I would not give up next year's 1st under any conditions   Dallas Turner MIGHT be that guy to trade up for........  But he might just fall to us at 15   He would be a PR specialist until he added some NFL muscle
    • I am not a big fan of this scheme but he needs a DE. To be honest, every defensive scheme needs to be able to pressure the qb in order for it to be effective. This team lacks a true franchise DE and until we get one, it wont matter what scheme we run, as they will all fail. Also, every defense needs players to make it work. Even the great defensive coordinators had the guy and/or guys. We lack a RDE, FS and a corner. I don't care who you bring in to Indy to be the defensive coach. I bet they would all fail to give results based on the talent they currently have on the roster.
    • Respectfully, per the stats, our defense was bottom 5.   (IMHO) We need significant help on defense
    • The more and more I think about it, I tend to agree with you. I think this is the year he moves up to get a guy. This team has been without a franchise DE for  7 years. U saw what Houston did last year to get their franchise qb and DE all in one year. They traded up to get Anderson at 3.    Ballard  talks  about Richardson and how he expects  him to elevate the offense  and allow for more explosive plays. You have Richardson, an elite running back, a number 2 wr (Pittman), Downs is emerging and Pierce is the unknown but i expect that he may have a coming out party this year with Richardson's ability to throw. Ballard has draft a lot of athletic TE's who have not been able to reach their upside because of injury, personal issues and/or overall qb play. I truly believe we have to give the skill players on offense one more year under Richardson to see what we have. Now to the defense. We have no franchise DE. We have Paye who's 5th option should not be picked up. He has been underwhelming and he  is a LDE at best. Buckner is Buckner but has maybe 2 more years of elite play in him. They dont have that guy on the end to put constant pressure on the qb and make this defense work. The saftey play is average at best. Cross  has not shown  the coaching staff anything over the last  2 years. Blackmon is average and that was clear in the Colts offering him a one year deal. He was basically signed because they lack depth at safety.  Brents came with a lot of fan fare but cannot stay healthy and the other corners are late round picks who i have little faith in over a 17 game schedule even though Ballard appears to love them. I would actually draft defense with my 1st 2 picks. I  was shocked that they kept Bradley as I fully expected them to move on in another direction. My keeping Bradley it showed me two things. They are committed to this scheme and acknowledge to Gus that they did not support him by providing him with enough play makers. I expect the Colts to address the D early and often in this draft. I just don't see them pulling the trigger on a TE and/or WR at 15. I really hope this is the year where they finally move up to get one of the DE's and lay the foundation for this D much like they did last year in drafting  Richardson. Drafting a wr is the sexy choice,  and I get it that we should surround the qb with weapons. The thing is that we may actually have some weapons on the roster and all it needs is for Richardson to play and we will see guys like Pierce and the TE's flourish. We don't address the DE, corner and/or safety position early and expect us to really struggle on defense this year. This draft reminds me of the Nelson pick. We struggle for years to protect Luck and they drafted a generational guard to put up a wall. A guard at #6 was a lot for a guard, but their was pressure to protect the franchise qb and the organization had seen enough.   I sense the same urgency with the DE position. It is time to go big game hunting!!
