Aguayo......totally serious idea for the Colts

Recommended Posts

For anyone that hasn't heard yet, the Buccaneer's starting kicker Aguayo just got released from the team and is going to go through waivers. Everyone knows the story on him: Super accurate in college, never missed under 40 yards, never missed an extra point, won his team (Florida State) a bunch of games, came into the NFL hyped as potentially the next great kicker. Draft night 2016, Bucs traded UP in the second round to draft Aguayo (which is ridiculously high to take a kicker). Kid couldn't handle the pressure and only made ~70% of his kicks his first year and the team brought in a veteran, Nick Folk, as competition to training camp this year. He continued to miss a bunch of kicks in training camp and during preseason game 1. He was released.

This is what I am thinking right now. There is no doubt the kid has talent, NFL level kicking talent. But the thing is, kicking (especially in the NFL) is like 90% mental. Kid just couldn't handle the pressure, whether it be being drafted so high, or being so highly touted by his team, or whatever. But he will and should get a second chance. He was absolutely a monster in the college game with A LOT of kicks.

He will most likely go unclaimed through waivers. Sign him to the practice squad, give him a year or two on there to get his mind right, for him to get a reset essentially away from the spotlight. With us having Vinatieri for probably 2 more years, let the kid learn how to handle the pressure behind him on the practice squad. And then give him a shot once our HoF kicker decides to hang up his cleats. I am probably one of the few ones that thinks the kid still has a shot to make it as an NFL kicker but this could seriously work out for us in the long run. Thoughts?

I bet college kicker NFL prospects are depressed seeing Aguayo. Aguayo probably hurt their draft positions. It will be a long time before a team takes another chance at a kicker so high again.

There had to be a trigger for it. Is Aguayo going through some type of stressful situation that's causing him to be distracted? Of course we may never know as that's really none of our business.

If he gets put on any teams practice squad then he would likely be claimed as soon as another team needs a kicker.

The only way to keep him is on the 53, which I am not totally against. He could be a kickoff specialist. However, that would mean another worthy player would be cut.

My gut says this would not be a good idea.

That said, you never know. Anything is possible.

If he can't handle the heat He needs to stay out of the kitchen It sounds like he can't handle the heat. There are plenty of kickers who can. The kid in KC will be looking for work when Santos gets back

I am not in favor of using a spot on the PS for a liquored up * * kicker I hear we can get one of them in Canada.

I wouldn't be so sure about a 2nd real chance at a roster There are only 32 It's not the eaaiest group to get in. We seem to have a good K taking the load off Vinny every preseason He has no chance at the roster How many other teams are like that? Most teams want experience If you get handed a PK job you better make good.

I still 10 more years out of vinatieri lol. Absolutely not. He can't handle the pressure, we can't risk him missing big kicks for us especially after vanderjact. I'm thinking we pick up gostowski after his contract is up.

Whether its confidence, stress or mechanics signing with an NFL team will not help. Maybe he should take a year off to reevaluate himself or sign with an Arena team which is much less stressful.  I agree he has talent but has issues.  There's a whole bunch of ST players waiting for a call.  Bottom line, no don't sign him and let him work through his issues.  If he progresses then yes kick the tires.

I have to admit I wanted the Colts to draft him when he came out.  I was worried about Vinny's age and consequently his leg strength.  So far Vinny has bucked all odds although he is the oldest player in the league.    Someone said earlier kicking is 90% mental.  Maybe spending some time with Vinny could be very beneficial.  Maybe he could handle kickoff duties to start.  I know roster spots are valuable but kickers could lose it suddenly just like any other player.  Sitting behind Vinny could be just the answer for him and maybe for the Colts long term.  Consequently I have no problem with bringing him in now and adding him to the roster.  I would trust Ballards judgement on cut down day.

the high draft pick and abnormal expectations I believe effected him. I see no harm in at least kicking the tires on him in the preseason at least

A lot of kickers struggle early on in their NFL careers. I think he'll have a good career eventually.

I think that extra roster spot is too valuable though, and he'd be picked off our PS pretty quickly with how NFL teams go through kickers.

He was lights out in college... until... he missed that field goal in the Rose Bowl-

He's tried to get help since-

So maybe he's just not good...

If we were to 'kick tires' on anything, is should have been signing UDFA Austin Rhekow to Colts camp.  unfortunately, the Bills did in in May, so...  Go AV!  {forever, LOL}

Yeah you very well could be right, maybe he's just not good.

I think if he can ever get over the mental side of things he hsa a chance though. Which is a big if. Not trying to compare him to AV, but Vinatieri himself was almost cut by Parcells early in his career after a 1-4 FG performance and 3-7 through his first few games.
