Tarell Basham... whats the deal?????

What is the hold up???  All the other players have not only signed but are on the field learning the playbook, techniques and most of all the processes. The learning curve is steep in the NFL. I cannot imagine he is not on top of this. He is no Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis. He has not even proven that he can do the job. He is a very enthusiastic kid who has bought into all the hype .... at the end of the day, you got to prove it on the field. The first part of any learning curve is very stressful, both mentally and physically.

This thread seems unnecessarily negative. He's not holding out, they just haven't signed him yet. He's been participating fully in team activities FYI. Tons of draft picks around the league haven't been signed yet. Most likely once other third rounders around him start to sign it will set his rate and he will sign. There is absolutely nothing to worry about, much less claim the kid has entitlement issues.

There are a lot of rookies that are unsigned.  Not close to being a big deal in mid may

Not trying to sound jaded but so tired of ignorant posters who have no clue what they're talking about yet think they know EVERYTHING that they are talking about. Seems like that's how life is nowadays; people who know the most about something keep quiet, while those who know the least speak the loudest.

 

The vast majority of NFL draftees have yet to sign and that includes Myles Garrett.

 

Free Agency and the draft is not like waiting in line at the DMV - they call your number and you go up to the front desk. Being the first to sign with a team is not indicative of "eagerness to play for the team because I'm the first in line."

 

Apples and oranges.

 

Right now, only 12 3rd round picks have signed. Less than 1/3.

Get your mind off that mans money!   He'll be signed whenever they get signed.

There's usually always one that we have that takes longer than the others but I can barely remember any season where we had any major issues signing rookies.     Lay off the impatient stuff.

Luck didn't sign until mid july his rookie season

Pretty much. You'll get some protracted negotiations at times, but that's business. It's only been three weeks, and the Colts have obviously been working on rookie contracts lately because everyone else has signed within the last 8 days. I assume Basham will closely follow.

 

And if he doesn't, oh well. As several others have said, he's at the compound, working with the team. It's really not a football issue unless he isn't signed by camp, and that's two months away.

1. I believe that draft picks can and do get playbooks and practice with the team even if they havn't quite signed a contract yet.  In fact I think the only thing you can't do as a draft pick without signing a contract is play in a game.

 

2. It's only May 19, a lot of players have not signed.  In fact the Colts getting all but one of their draft picks signed by now is actually fairly early.  

 

Relax, I'm sure he's learning the playbook and practicing during mini-camps.  It's usually good to have them signed before Training camp but I don't think they absolutely have to be signed until the first pre-season game.  

Let him and his agent hammer out a deal with the Colts that works for both sides. 

 

This isn't holding him up at all and it's still about 3 months before it could even start holding him up the smallest bit.

I think Basham should be cut immediately;  Ballard needs to send a message that he will not stand for this type of nonsense.

 

Ballard should then be put on notice by Irsay that drafting malcontents like this better not be the norm.

 

Irsay should then be sent the message by the city of Indianapolis that they will not tolerate situations like this by sports franchises that represent their fine city.  Get Congress involved, if need be.

I'm pretty sure you can't play in a game, especially not a regular season game without a contract.  Maybe not even a pre-season game.

 

That said you can practice and get the playbook without any contract.

 

So ultimately we don't have anything to worry about.  He's got like 3 months before not having a contract becomes any sort of a hold up.  

 

It's not really a concern for the fan base at this point.  Let the Bashem and the Colt's work out the business side of things.  I'm sure they will have it hammered out before training camp.

      his reaction to 5, but specifically 6 qbs going through 15 tells me they have 8 or 9 guys they consider premium players.  go back to 2018 draft and he identified premium players as game changing, teams game planning against through the week players. And identified 8 non qb players that year, obviously Q being one of them. I think about those comments a lot, especially when he traded away for Buck. I say there is 8- possibly 9 premium non qb players on the colts board. If one is there at 15, that’s who they take. If not, you can bet it’s a trade back.

      Do u ever get there is any sense of urgency with Ballard when he speaks bout the team? I hear a lot of I think they should. He just comes across like a guy who feels that he is safe as long as Irsay is the owner. Smooth talker, I guess, and I tire of the soft ball questions from the media. Your team was like at the bottom of the league and that was against horrendous qb play.  Your 2nd round pick corner couldn't stay healthy. Your other corners are late round picks and one coming back from serious injury. I know it's a presser and he can't give it away but man, you would think his defense is just peachy. I honestly think this D needs so much work both schematically and on the talent side. I do think listening to him, he will trade back. I think that the guys that he really covets will be gone or way too expensive. The  top 3 wrs will be gone as will be Bowers. Mitchell is probably not his guy the Dends will go fast. There might be a guy at say 12 but I think he won't pill the trigger and say give  up a 2nd or 3r rounder.

      I see most of this forum is fine with Ballard doing what Ballard's always done.   So I'll just remind everybody that he is 54-60-1 and he doesn't have the QB excuse anymore. If he thinks that playing conservative with trading back for more picks and the cap are always the way to go, then I just hope the fan base, and Irsay especially, make no excuses for how those picks work out (and how the top prospects that he didn't make moves for worked out). It's going to be incredibly easy to compare how his strategy works vs what the Texans and Jags have done in FA this year, and it'll be very easy to follow how MHJ,Nabers,Odunze and Bowers perform.
