Hugh said a mouthful when he admitted he hadn`t committed to training like he should have Until his contract year. He can sit on the couch with Khaled, Josh C, and probably Montori next season.

That would have to be one BIG couch!

I think you missed the point.

Well what he said was obvious but the exclamation point on the end stressed sarcasm or anger. So what point did i miss?  He could have retired simply because or injuries and has no money and will have to work or was offered a job. All just speculation...

Most professional athletes are very smart with their money. They just dont make good news stories.

Hugh had some talent but he sure did have his share of injuries so I hope he feels good and is able to enjoy his life after football. Good luck to Hugh Thornton.

I actually think it's the other way around, most athletes aren't good with their money:

That sports illustrated article was not accurate and has been disputed.

The numbers I have seen are less than 15% wind up broke .....10 years or so after retirement.

Edit: this is from the same page you linked

"A Fortune magazine article states, however, that a working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that the percentage of NFL players who go bankrupt after two years is a much smaller 1.9%, climbing to 15.7% after 12 years."

Your initial post said professional athletes in general. But I thought it was basically common knowledge  that athletes have money spending issues? They have TONS of money coming in and going out when they are playing, and they don't know how to cut back after they retire, and don't have that huge check coming in.

They do.

I'm just saying those issues are likely overblown with sensational stories like Allen Iverson and so on.

I think most of these guys are pretty smart with their money.
