19. Indianapolis Colts

2016 record: 8-8
Post-free agency ranking: No. 22gn-arrow.png

The Colts appear to have upgraded at general manager, and new guy Chris Ballard justifiably went defense heavy in the draft. Keeping Andrew Luck off the field a little bit more isn't a bad way to try to keep Andrew Luck safe.

That makes no real sense to me -- if we're adding ball hawks and improving our D, would we not be getting Luck on the field more than by having a crappy D?

I think the writer just meant the opposing offense wont be able to score at ease thus leaving luck off the field more. Atleast thats how i interpreted it.

That'd be one way to interpret it, but usually it's 'the better the defense, the more time the offense is on the field.'  That seems to be a solid approach to winning football games.

Power rankings at this time of year are so dumb. I really don't get how teams can be rated before training camp even begins.

I agree, it is true and it is a little insane when we don't know how young guys from last year will develop, how guys are going to respond from injury, how rookies are going to perform, etc. etc. etc.

I was more pointing out I think the writer's quote was a little weird... improving our defense will help keep Luck off the field?

With brilliant talk like that, I just can't imagine why people are tuning out ESPN

I CAN UNDERSTAND HOW IT COULD MAKE NO SENSE THAT A BETTER D KEEPING LUCK OFF THE FIELD LONGER CAN KEEP HIM OUT OF DANGER ProblChld32. HOWEVER I CAN SEE HOW KEEPING LUCK ON THE FIELD IS TO OUR COLTS BENEFIT. BUT LAST YEAR IN AT LEAST 4 GAMES WE LOST IN THE LAST MINUTE AND OVER TIME IF WE HAD A BETTER AND LESS INJURED D WE'D PROBABLY NEVER BEEN IN THOSE SITUATIONS.

WE'RE A STRIKE FAST TEAM, MAINLY BECAUSE WE HAVE TO BE (AND WE HAVE THE OFFENSIVE SKILL PLAYERS THAT HELP MAKE IT THAT WAY). WE MADE SOME ADDITIONS TO THE OL AND A RB THAT CAN HELP MAKE GORE EVEN MORE EFFECTIVE. MY BIGEST CONCERN IS A PUNTER AT THIS POINT WE LOST THE BEST TO RETIREMENT.

EVERY YEAR THEY COME OUT WITH THESE POWER RANKINGS BEFORE A DEPTH CHART IS EVEN OUT LET ALONE WHAT WE SEE IN PRE-SEASON; THERE ARE NEVER THE SAME AFTER THE FIRST SNAP

ESPN throws darts.

ESPN stands for Excessively Suupportive Patriots Network.

People can call me crazy and mock me all they want when I say this but ever since DFGate, ESPN and the NFL Network takes jabs/bash at us every chance they get. I haven't heard either Network so 1 good thing about us in 2 years and that is no exaggeration. You would've thought hiring Ballard would've got us huge praise, I think each Network spent about a minute on the hiring when it happened lmao. During the Draft every time we would pick, the announcers were blowing us off. It took a freakin Orangutan to get any attention at all and even there we got dump on by the NFL Network.

Every team has made changes to their team.  Some teams more than others.  No team has has even snapped a ball yet.  So, publishing a list which racks and stacks all the teams at this point isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

A better defense will give the offense more opportunities , better protection upfront plus  a Running game  & a quicker release will be the recipe for success that will keep 12 upright ..

Dude  The Orangutan made watching the NFL Network & ESPN palatable boths coverage sucked .  The media has endorsed a decade of cheating & questionable tactics & scandals that only one team has turned into a handful of SB appearances  , Ironic is'nt it a few years back we had deflated balls & the media has been blowing us off since then .

It actually started before DFgate with Michael Wilbon on PTI. He has had a long time hate of Jim Irsay and makes no bones about it.

To their credit, since deflate-gate the Colts' as a team and an organization have been nothing more than mediocre.  Two 8-8 seasons in the AFC South, the rumors swirling around about Grigson & Pagano having a rift, etc... after 3  years in a row of touting Andrew as a shoe-in for the HOF and multiple SBs.

    • Rick Venturi today on the radio said he is more of a fan of speed with corners then what Ballard has done. He said young corners have to be able to recover from mistakes. I would almost like rodgers instead of Brent’s.
    • BBZ, what do you mean when you say Brents will be successfully targeted because of his size and speed? Aren't those his good traits?
    • Right. But we also are expected to draft a corner, So the fact that DeJean can play either position, makes me think Ballard could have his eye on him.
    • As a Ballard type player, he seems to fit the bill.  Big 10. Excels at zone coverage. Elite athlete. Special Teams standout, Good tackler. etc. Colts may be able to trade back, and still land DeJean   Considered one of the Safest picks. Seven 2024 NFL Draft Prospects Who Are Safest Bets to Succeed at Next Level https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10113875-7-2024-nfl-draft-prospects-who-are-safest-bets-to-succeed-at-next-level   DB Cooper DeJean, Iowa   A fractured fibula during a November practice tempered any excitement regarding Cooper DeJean's draft status. So he's not been in the same conversations as the class' top defensive backs, specifically Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell and Alabama's Terrion Arnold. DeJean's profile projects just as well or better than the aforementioned cornerbacks.   Three specific attributes set DeJean's floor higher than anyone else among the back end.   First, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year presents the positional flexibility and traits to start at cornerback or safety at the professional level, with B/R's Cory Giddings highlighting his coverage skills:   "DeJean excels in zone coverage, but he's versatile enough to play man as well. He shows a smooth backpedal and the ability to keep his leverage and quick footwork with few wasted steps. Although he transitions well, there are times where DeJean hops into his breaks; allowing a step of separation.   "When in zone, DeJean does a great job of reading and reacting to the quarterback's eyes. Pairing that skill set with his route recognition, he often puts himself in good position with leverage and positioning.   "While working downfield, DeJean has the strength necessary to hand-fight with tight ends and bigger receivers, as well as the speed necessary to carry twitchier receivers downfield. He also does a very good job of locating the ball and playing through the catch point."   Second, the high school track standout is an elite athlete who captured Iowa state titles in the long jump and 100-meter dash. Many expected him to blow the doors off Lucas Oil Stadium. Unfortunately, he wasn't ready to test in Indianapolis after being cleared a few weeks earlier.   "His acceleration is incredibly fluid and super powerful," NFL combine trainer Jordan Luallen told The Athletic's Bruce Feldman last summer. "He's the best athlete I've seen in person, pound for pound."   Finally, DeJean adds significant value as an elite collegiate returner. Big Ten coaches also awarded him Return Specialist of the Year this past season. DeJean averaged 13.1 yards per punt return over the last two seasons. A top-notch contributor anywhere along the defensive backfield and on special teams will provide excellent value in the NFL.   Potential Landing Spots: Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles
    • He could, but I think he's way more athletic than people give him credit for and projects way better as CB. Definitely could be a good safety, but I think if we drafted him, he fits well as a boundary corner for us.
