No TE?

I was hoping Ballard would snag one of these talented TEs from this loaded class. Bucky Hodges is still available and would've loved having him over Hairston.

Two things:

1. Something must be up with Bucky, that has surfaced, maybe

2. If he is there in the 6th/7th the Colts could trade back in with a 2018 5th or 6th.

We have Doyle who can block and catch. We have Swoope who is primarily a receiver, and we have Brandon Williams who is a pretty good blocker. I'm fine with that group of TE's.

We'll bring in a UDFA or two to compete for Williams' spot and put Alie-Cox on the practice squad

Only one skill player was drafted 'Mack'

so we may be transitioning from finesse

to more of a physical smash mouth team.

Our last 2 or 3 GM's would have definitely

went with a TE somewhere in the draft.

We were a top 10 offense last year, CB addressed RB and OLine.  A #3 TE wasn't a huge need.

Yeah exactly. A physical smash mouth team I like the sound of that

Interesting.....

I've never thought of the Colts as a "finesse" team.....

Hmmmm?

You and maybe 2 other people, perhaps. The Colts have been the definition of "finesse" NFL team since like 2004. Granted drafting a few defensive players doesn't make you smash mouth, but it's a trend away from QB puts up record breaking numbers or bust that we've operated on for 15 years.

There will be free agents later in the year during preseason that there was no reason to expend valuable draft capital on a TE that likely won't see much playing time with our two young starters. We even have a rookie project to stash on the practice squad and a blocking special team specialist we got in FA. It might be a need if we get some injuries but for now it was low on the board.

I think it shows incredible level of trust in Doyle and Swoope. People are probably not surprised about them trusting Doyle since they gave him a good long-term contract, but the reports from the Colts and from Ballard have been that they love Swoope! He had some explosive plays last year and hinted at having good potential at the position.

What the Colts were under Manning and what the Colts have recently been during the Grigson/Pagano/Luck years I don't believe are the same thing....

not that I don't want those record-breaking numbers..

......we've done awfully well for those 15 years

I agree. Clark was a first down making machine and was a go to guy. Doyle is a little like him just can't run the routes as well as Clark did.

Manning's use of the tight ends all depended on what defense he was facing. You never knew what TE or WR was going to shine from game to game.

Hopefully with more experience Luck can start to see the field and what the defenses are doing as well as Manning did after his 4th year.

The other thing that helped Manning was the presence of Dilger and Pollard at the start of his career

We now have

 Doyle

 Swoope

 Williams

 Alie Cox

 Daniels

 and

Jeter

plus

some TE style WR

Daniels is somewhat of an intriguing prospect. 6'3" 250 or so. Hands are good, runs 4.5 forty. Has very long 34 plus inch arms. Moves pretty well from what I've seen on tape. Said to be more of a receiver than blocker.

It is going to be interesting to see the battle for the last TE spot

He has a Dallas Clark type skill set in terms of size and what hes good at versus not good at. Not that he is Clark of course. We will see if any of it carries over when the bullets start flying.

Sounds like the measureables of the new Jordan Reed type TE. Could be a steal if developed

I would happily take SEA Jimmy Graham. That's a borderline 1,000 yard TE.

I'd much rather have Saints Jimmy Graham but I understand where you are coming from.  The Saints offense was better suited for him in my opinion.  He did have a good year last year with Seattle though.

I'm actually very high on Swoope. I think he can be a complete mismatch in terms of being too fast for most LB's to cover, but too big for most safeties/corners. It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up with 500-600 yards receiving on the season.

If healthy, he should absolutely end up with at least 500-600 yards receiving. Last season, he had 297 yds on 22 targets (15 catches). If you gave him just half of Allen's targets from last season (~26) in addition to the 22 he had...he would have 600+ yards.

But, ideally, he should get ~80% of those targets from last season (~42)...which would put him at ~64 targets. He probably won't maintain that ridiculous 19.8 yds/catch, but with his RAC ability he should still get 15 yds/catch. If he catches 70% of those targets (~45 catches)...that's 675 yds.

If Swoope plays like he did last season, he could be competing with Doyle for TE1 targets by mid-season. Sky's the limit.
