What would need to happen for you to consider 2017 a successful season?

Below 20 a season is a realistic as trading a compensatory 7th rounder in the year 2050 for JJ Watt, who we then sign to $5.15 per hour minimum wage.

I don't think you're aware of sacks per season allowed by offensive lines in this league.

https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/qb-sacked-per-game

The lowest is an average of 1.2 sacks per game, which is 19 per season. (rounding numbers appropriately)

The highest is 4.1 per game, or 66 a season.

The median is 2.2 per game, or 35 a season.

I understand it's not easy to accomplish. Especially with the lack of practice time for O lineman and the freaks of nature coming off the edge these days. Plus teams are throwing it more than ever. But Peyton & Ben (missed game or two to injury maybe) have gotten below 20 in these past few years. Carr did it last year. Eli was around that mark.

I think you need a good line and a great scheme to consistently flirt with getting below 20 but it can be accomplished.  But it I see what you're saying. 25 isn't a bad number at all in today's NFL.  So I stand corrected. I'll settle for 25 sacks allowed. That will still probably be the fewest Luck has taken in a season. And compared to 41, it is a drastic improvement. But we should be shooting for above average.

I'm "content with mediocrity," haven't you heard?

"Mediocrities everywhere, I absolve you!"

Couldn't resist. Anyway, for the Colts to have a successful season: no major injuries and a winning record. Getting the AFC South division is icing on the cake.

-Improve slow starts on offense.

-Defensive improvement in all areas.

-Division win and atleast one playoff game win.

-Andrew to take another step forward (cutting down on bone-headed turnovers for instance).

I'd also like to see the Colts not let teams come back into games if they happen to get up early. This seemed like more of a product of having so many young players last season but it still cannot happen as much as it did.

• Healthy Luck playing 16 games

• Significant strides with the offensive line

• An improved, faster defense that doesn't just get gashed game after game by mediocre offenses

Easier said than done, but if those 3 things happen, which is very likely IMO, I expect us to win no less than 10 games and make the playoffs.

First a major reduction in the number of injuries we seem to experience every year.  If it happens again we need a write in campaign to replace the field IMO.  Hopefully they do it this summer.  That would really make me happy.  In addition a solid OL, finally, and a top 10-15 defense.  If that happens than I think we win the division and anything after that is icing on the cake.

Thought this would be an interesting thread...

How would you consider 2017 a success? AFC South champs? A few playoff wins? Super bowl or bust(I'm not but I know some people are like that)?

For me, I'd say AFC South champs, with a few playoff wins would be a successful year for Pagano/Ballard. Anything short of that, would be a failure. JMO.

I'm not sure what Irsay will use as the litmus for his decision, but we as fans should be able to spot significant improvement from the team's performance on the field.  I have a feeling that this coming season will be better than the last two.

Progress in every aspect of the team from last year.

offense, defense, lines, lbers, secondary and special

teams.....and Luck making better decisions.

I'm not asking for much just progress over last year.

Yes, i want to feel good that we are Actually Building something.
 I like our D prospects.
O-Line is destined for mediocrity again with current players.

Getting consistent performances from the team as a whole.  The team has been very Jekyll and Hyde-ish under Chuck.

offensive philosophy that doesn't stress out the offensive line and protects Luck.  A man can dream.

To consider this upcoming season a success AFC South champs and back to the playoffs must happen for me to consider this season a success.

Prying the South from the hearts of all the Texans fan base(Too dark?), and knocking the Pats out of the playoffs would be a great start!! :)

Win the first of multiple SBs. If that doesn't happen, knocking the Pats out of contention would be sweet. If someone else knocks them out, that would be great too!

It can be accomplished. I see the existing O-line capable, but I have no confidence in the scheme - yet - so it probably won't be accomplished. We can't ignore the elephant in the room.

For 2017 to be a success..... I'd like to see Luck have as much time in the pocket as Brady seems to have most times. And sacks. Lots and LOTS of sacks from our guys.

Our offense needs to fall in love with the quick hitter like Brady's offense. Brady is one of the fastest from snap to throw. Luck is one of the slowest.

I'm going to leave out team records and winning the division because it's still pre-draft and anything could happen. I'm going much more complex, though, saying that we need to get at least 40 sacks while our offensive line lets up less than 25. We need to get at least 25 takeaways from our defense (INT and FR combined), and also allowing under 100 rushing yards per game. Our offense needs to let up less than 15 turnovers and rush for 120 ypg. Oh, and finally, we need to keep Luck healthy.

I like that, but we could accomplish all that, and still be 4-12.  We have to at least win the division, even if 7-9 wins it.

We need to make it to the Divisional Round.  Be one of the top 8 teams in the league.  Be RELEVANT.

- Winning record.

- Compete occasionally with playoff teams and teams outside of the AFC South.

- Inch closer to average on defense, the O-line and in the running game.

It's year 6 of Luck, yes, but it's year one of trying to clean up the Chernobyl level disaster left by Grigson.  It will likely take a new coach to finish the job.

For me personally? Winning the lottery or getting a big fat promotion.....for the team, well there are many ways to explain success, in short success as it relates to the Colts for me, would be growing a defensive spine. If they do that, they can go anywhere.......

Win a Playoff game

We do that then it was a successful season.

Anything short of a win in the "Final" season is equivalent to & mired in the mediocre middle of the pack teams picking Draft picks in the teens and early twentys.

Let's prove we're back on track to reaching a Conference Title game sometime before the end of this decade.

So...training camp injuries aren't relevant.  Interesting.

-Winning the division again would be a huge step in the right direction regardless of the playoffs.

-Luck staying injury free for an entire year would also be a huge step in the right direction.

-Also winning week 1 against a team again we should beat (like many week 1's) would also go a long ways to setting the tone for the year.

I said the team needs to be relevant for a successful season.  I didn't say TC injuries aren't relevant.  Making it out of TC with our starters healthy would be a huge success, but that's the beginning of the season.  Not the whole season.

1. Lucks shoulder is normal.

2. A much improved defense with a good pass rush.

3. An improved secondary.

Since the Texans are apparently going with Savage at QB despite their defense I see a runoff between the Colts and the Titans for the #1 spot. Curious to see how well Mariota's leg has healed and how his mobility is affected.

-Play four quarters of football each game.

-Running game improves due to O-line blocking improvement.

-Andrew isn't running for his life and throws picks because of having to force the ball.

-Defense doesn't make QB's like Osweiler look like Joe Montana.  Pass rush developes and becomes a threat.  CB's coverage improves.

-Run D limits big run plays.

Colts take the AFC South and win at least one playoff game.

Colts beat Pittsburgh and (been a while) and Seattle.   Record should be 11-5.

To win the AFC South

beyond that there's a lot of 'Luck' involved

    • Yeah... Richardson needs players who can separate and who can get open deep. IMO "give the inaccurate QB a contested catch receiver with large catch radius" is one of the tropes that hasn't proven to work well. Contested catches have about 50-55% success rate even with the best of contested catch receivers and with relatively accurate QBs... now if you think AR's accuracy is not good, drop that rate even more. The best way to give a relatively inaccurate QB better chance to complete passes is to give him a WR who separates and and who is open so the QB would have more of a margin for error to throw the ball a little behind or ahead or a little higher or lower than ideal. (we are not talking about uncatchable balls here... those will be uncatchable for anyone really). In that regard, one thing I would agree about is - we need WRs who have good hands and have good ball skills.   And this is ignoring that AR has indeed been pretty good with his accuracy on passes at intermediate and long range. His biggest problem coming into the league was the short stuff and he was already showing improvements in that deparment before he got injured.    And Worthy is the WR who created the most separation from anybody in this draft :
    • Richardson  accuracy  on deep balls is his strength.  Hence why you pair an elite deep threat in worthy.
    • No.   You weren’t.   If you were the least bit sincere, we’d be having these conversations in private.  But you’ve repeatedly ignored my efforts to do that.  Your call.      Then you avoid me until I’m in an uncomfortable conversation with another poster.   You use that awkward moment as an excuse for you to come in with some sincere friendly advice.   The problem is, you’re neither sincere, nor friendly.  And you’ve been doing this for months now.  This is not new.   The pattern is clear and obvious.     And the shame of it all is that even with our different views on Ballard we have enough in common that we should be friendly.  Maybe not friends, but friendly.  You wouldn’t need to address me as “Sir.”    “Good deed going unpunished”.  You flatter yourself.     But your actions speak much louder than your words.   There’s no reason for me to trust you.  And here we are.  A real shame.
    • In a year when the Colts were in serious need of a QB and in position to draft one, Ballard came up in front of the media 3 days before the draft and straight up said something to the effect of "That guy everybody in media is talking about(Levis), we are not taking him". I don't know why you think the Colts are trying to throw us off the scent this year specifically. They are not trying to give us away the pick(thus the vagueness), but I also don't really think they are trying to mislead anybody. This usually becomes specifically apparent in retrospect after the draft when you look back at a lot of those quotes in the videos they release pre-draft... and they were talking precisely about players we ended up drafting, which they reveal in the post-draft video by extending some of those quotes(they did that with AR last year for example).    And about why people are doing it(guessing who they are talking about) - because it is fun. Nobody has the illusion that we will be right in our guesses 100% of the time... or anywhere close really... but it's still fun. And it's part of why the Colts release those videos with those quotes - to create engagement with the fanbase... part of which, and the entirety of which that 70 pages thread and whole board is about in the offseason. is to guess who the Colts might take and how they might feel about specific prospects.
