Dr. T's Annual Colts Draft Contest for 2017

Recommended Posts

Welcome once again to Dr. T’s annual Colts Draft Contest for 2017! With seven choices this year, the rules again needed to be changed. Therefore, contestants will be asked to select an A, B, and C choice for round 1 only and A and B choices for all rounds thereafter. In round one, correctly choosing choice A merits 5 points, while correctly choosing choice B or C instead will merit 4 and 3 points respectively. In the other rounds, correctly picking an A choice in the correct round wins 4 points, while correctly picking a B choice in the correct round merits 3 points. If one of your "A" selections is chosen but in a different round than you predicted, you get 2 points, if one of your "B" selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 1 point, and if one of your "C" selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 0.5 points. In addition, you will also get to choose three free agent predictions and will get 0.5 points for any of these that the Colts actually draft. If AND ONLY IF there is no clear winner at the end of the 7 rounds of the draft, the contest will be extended for ALL participants in which everyone will also get one point for each collegiate free agent you predicted will be signed by the Colts after the draft.

Make your choices here by listing the round, choice A, B (or C only in round 1), for each round, and 3 free agent choices with the name of the player, position and school. You may also write with each choice a little blurb explaining why you chose that person.

Your Colts 18 selections this year are as follows:

Round 1 - #15 A, B, C

Round 2 - #46 A, B

Round 3 - #80 A, B

Round 4 - #122 A, B

Round 4 - #137 A, B

Round 4 - #144 A, B

Round 5 - #158 A, B

Free Agents: 3 choices

Please be a good sport and do not just copy other contestant's selections. You can easily do some research on your own, since plenty of free draft services are available on the web. You can make changes to your selections, but this can only be done before the contest is closed on Thursday at noon CST April 27, 2016, on the first day of the draft. Good luck and let the best GM win!

The Mock draft to rule this forum ;) Comes from The Danish Colts fan - aka Thorsten Kudahl ;)

I know I will not hit 100% of my first choices, but im satisfied with 90% ;)

So to kick start this contest, I'll now tell you how the colts will draft.

Round 1 - #15 A, B, C

A) Forrest Lamp - OG - Luck need protection, and if Lamp is there, he might be the BPA on our Board

B) Jabrill Peppers - LB - CB wants competition, and Peppers would be a great pick.

C) Taco Charlton - DE - We need a DE, and Charlton could be the guy for us.

Round 2 - #46 A, B

A) Marcus Williams - S - We have been weak at since Bob Sanders left us, Williams could be the next BOB

B) Alvin Kamara - RB - Gore is old and Kamara can block and catch in the open, great for Luck

Round 3 - #80 A, B

A) Jalen Tabor - CB - If on the board here at #80, its a no brainer.

B) Tarell Basham - DE - We need a DE and Basham would be a great fit.

Round 4 - #122 A, B

A) Jake Butt - TE - Butt and Doyle as our TE Duo... oh yeah

B) Brad Kaaya - QB - Kaaya as Lucks backup, would be nice.

Round 4 - #137 A, B

A) Nazair Jones - DE/ DT

B) Isaac Asiata - G

Round 4 - #144 A, B

A) Carl Lawson - DE/ OLB

B) Elija Hood - RB

Round 5 - #158 A, B

A) Will Holden - OT

B) Rasul Douglas  - CB

Free Agents: 3 choices

Andreas Knappe - OT - Denmark, due to his age, he wont be drafted, and the colts need a guy like him.

Gabe Marks - WR - Competition and wr for the practice squad

Treston Decoud - S - Competition for the practice squad

Laugh or just laugh, its now open for debate ;)

For my mock I did not STRICTLY go with "who I want" I tried to be as objective and realistic as possible based on where players are valued at the moment. I took some calculated risks like teams often do, and in other spots I was "hopin' my guys are still there at my pick" thinking......something close to this in reality would make me happy, but honestly what you read below doesn't quite hit the marks I want as a fan.....If that makes any sense.

Round 1 - #15

A: Rueben Foster ILB

B: Hasson Reddick OLB

C: Charles Harris OLB

Round 2 - #46

A: Davon Godchaux DL

B: Raekwan McMillan ILB

Round 3 - #80

A: Kevin King DB

B: Joe Mixon RB

Round 4 - #122

A: Sydney Jones DB

B: Tyus Bowser OLB

Round 4 - #137

A: Matt Milano OLB

B: Ryan Glasgow DL

Round 4 - #144

A: Jordan Leggett TE

B: Jalen Reeves-Maybin ILB

Round 5 - #158

A: Jelani Hamilton DL

B: Fred Ross WR

Free Agents: 3 choices:

Speedy Noil WR

David Jones S

Corey Levin OG

Question if I may Dr? First time player, long time listener, how do trades affect things? So if the Colts say traded up and gave some later round picks?

Excellent question.  If trades happen before the draft, then we usually let everyone start over. But if trades happen during the draft (and that has happened many times), then the picks you made can still count if the Colts pick that person. Unfortunately, you won't get the top points for that person, because that choice would be in the a different round or selection.

Here's an example: So let's say you chose Joe Smith as selection A for #158 in the 5th round, but the Colts trade that pick for a fourth rounder and select Joe Smith anyway. You were right, but in the wrong round (or selection). So we already have a contingency for this. Unfortunately, instead of getting 4 points for an A selection at #158, you get 2 points for an A selection that is not #158. Get it?

Round 1 - #15

A: Budda Baker FS – Bob Sanders comparison...need we say more.  Longevity of safeties in the NFL playing into their mid-30s has proven return on investment thus this is our wisest selection here.  Too many other teams also in dire need at FS and chances of landing either Budda Baker or Marcus Williams in Round 2 looking more like a long shot.  Two years without a valid starting FS is unacceptable imo

B: Hasson Reddick OLB – With offseason movements no long a pressing need imo but definitely would be an upgrade.

C: Chidobe Awuzie RCB – imo one of the best right corners in this year’s draft and immediate defensive improvement.  Experienced at playing the outside, slot and even safety.

Round 2 - #46

A:  Kevin King RCB – Darius Butler replacement that can play FS as well.

B: Marcus Williams FS – At some point we need to address FS needs.

Round 3 - #80

A: Duke Riley LB – early on my watch list and have enjoyed seeing his draft stock rise. Duke should give RILB Edwin Jackson competition as a full-time starter.

B: Joe Mixon RB – Would be a draft steal to obtain a talented running back here.  Although am holding any RB projections off until next year’s draft with futures on RB Saquon Barkley.

Round 4 - #122

A: Jack Butt TE – obviously a glaring need to add roster depth with a talented TE

B: Pat Elflein C/OG – offensive line depth

Round 4 - #137

A: Ryan Switzer Slot WR – Someone needs to push Phillip Dorsett as a full time starter.

B:  George Kittle TE – team need to add roster depth

Round 4 - #144

A: Lorenzo Jerome SS – imo Lorenzo has been overlooked and is one of the better strong safeties with the skill set to be a Day 1 starter.

B:  Matt Milano LILB – we need roster help on our left interior side.  Matt has a strong chance to be a full-time starter when healthy.

Round 5 - #158

A: Josh Carraway OLB

B: Danny Isidora ROG

Free Agents: 3 choices:

James Quick Slot WR (2013 MVP U.S. Army All American Bowl)

Joey Ivie NT

Marcus Oliver ILB - multiple defensive player of the game accolades

3 Free Safeties (try saying that when you're drunk!)?

Colts have been meeting with a lot of safeties. It's not that I think they'll draft more than 1, it's just I'm not sure which one they'll draft and where so I put one in Like 3 rounds lol.

I'm too old to go though that format so I'll just say

Harris in the first and Jackson in the 2nd. If Jackson is not there , I'll go with Bubba Baker. Maybe trading down a few spots and picking up a 5th.

I dont know if this is even possible, but i just thought id put the idea in the proverbial suggestion box:

We should put some sort of prize on this. Weve done it every year since ive joined the forums (which, if my math is right, is nearly 4 years).  It's pretty well known at this point. We have a weekly entry you post for 2 free tickets every week. Well the suggestion is that, whoever wins this contest gets the tickets for the first preseason or regular season game. I suppose preseason makes the most sense since anyone on these forums would care about the 1st preseason game way more than the casual observer who comes to these forums just for the raffle. Your thoughts?

If I could edit my above post it might look more like this today, I really thought I could come in from time to time and adjust leading up to the deadline, but apparently there is a limit to how many times one can edit on here as the edit button is a "no call no show" lol so if you can't adjust Ill run what I brung, but if I can you may see me quoting myself to alter my picks leading up to draft day from time to time lol.....juuuuuust wingin' it.

You can repost if you want to edit.  Just make a note in the post to let dr t. Know that the current post is the one you want to use.  Many people have done it in the past

No prize is necessary.  Everyone knowing that I... err I mean the winner of the draft contest is King of the Forum for a year is prize enough.

    • I just cant understand taking D line over a CB this year.  WR or Bowers would make sense to me   If the team doesnt value corners this way then maybe they should start.  I dont like to pigeon hole what we draft this hard but our secondary is a bunch of nobodies and our Dline is ok, better than ok actually.  We dont even have many snaps for a rookie unless they are a really good edge right out of the gate. A rookie DT from this class isnt beating Buckner or Stewart.
    • We see many coverage failures by all teams caused by miscommunication.  Certainly there are exceptional individuals that play CB but experience and intelligence are vital.  Flowers had size and 4.3's speed, and Jones was decent. Juju has potential but because of his size and speed he will always be successfully targeted.   We are desperate for a 4.3's stud that can cover anytime, anywhere. That was Rodgers BTW.
    • Isaiah Land he says.     Every year it happens. The Dallas Cowboys make some tough roster cuts and we all wait nervously to see if our favorite prospects make it cleanly through waivers. Most do, but every once in a while, a team will scoop up that one guy we were hoping made it to the practice squad. This year, that player is edge rusher Isaiah Land. An undrafted free agent from Florida A&M, Land dealt with injuries his final year in college, but had a remarkable season in 2021 when he finished with 19 sacks, 25.5 tackles for a loss, and three fumble recoveries. While there is a lot to be uncovered with him, he still flashed enough to draw interest from the Cowboys. Throughout the summer, the young edge rusher had impressed and it looked like the team had found another diamond in the rough. Land was fantastic during the preseason. In three games, he finished with 10 total pressures, which was the second-most of any player on any NFL team this preseason. He also finished with seven hurries on 45 pass-rushing snaps. He only recorded one official sack but finished with a pass rush win rate of 20%. Not only that, he had opposing tackles so worried about his get-off that they were regularly jumping early. There were several instances when tackles would get called for a false start.    Might as well be optimistic about  Woods and Land contributing to our resurrection.
    • Nice catch Stitch.  Year two of Steichen, our very functional TE group and Downs gives me very high expectations that we will be highly effective attacking the middle of the field. If we do add another WR to help complement the other side of the field, Pittman's ability to be even more outstanding only goes up. And I feel confident another guy will be added. Our offense should be very strong for 2024.
    • I'm hopeful Colts resign Blackmon and do this in the draft
