As of now (March 13) the Colts have 64 players on their roster (This includes the most recent signings).

Only 5 are of the age 30 or older:

     Viniteri    - 44

     Gore       - 33

     Overton  - 31

     Langford - 31

     Jones      - 30

Only 3 others are over the age of 27:

     Tolzien     - 29

     Castonzo - 28

     Davis       - 28

6 players are now age 27 (including Luck and Hilton)........and 50 players are age 26 or younger.

It needed to be done honestly. There were guys who were old by nfl standards at key positions.

Need some young fast ilb's to stuff the run and chase down backs and te's were desperately needed. Throw in some young pass rushers and the team is heading in the right direction.

Was getting tired of guys like DQ 5 yards behind his guy in the open field.

We have to get younger and faster to compete.

Thanks for doing this!    Good post!

Getting younger was never going to happen completely in one off-season.    We might even still bring back Butler?       But we clearly needed to move in that direction.

The process of getting younger will no doubt continue in 2018.      We'll be having some of the same conversations a year from now....

Much needed.    Long overdue.

It goes in cycles, folks.

We had Dungy who had a "younger and faster" model but we did not have sound DL in the middle leading to several clock consuming runs/series for the opposition and did not have the man CBs to play tighter on coverage (which we should have invested in having Frathis in their prime). So we longed for change, and were enamored with "fatties" and then we got "fatties" only to realize being big isn't all that without athleticism.

Finally, we seemed to realize the need for more athleticism and speed even if it costs us a tad bit of bulk, gap shooting and man coverage whenever possible. Hopefully, we have the right mix of youth and vets to make it all work.

Notice how it's Ballard that has been preaching competition at every position (which makes sense) because Pagano plays blatant favouritism

Now this, without wishing to open old wounds, was apparently one of the big points of contention between him and Grigson. He wasn't necessarily picking the starters..

I've heard and seen conflicting things about that.  At the end of the day, even if the GM is telling you what to do, you're the head coach for a reason.  You need to make the call on who starts.  Even if you decide to listen to the GM, say in the interest of job security, after you see the GM's demands aren't producing results, you need to change things up.  As you said, that's in the past.

Really? I kinda thought there was a conflict regarding Grigson being in those shoes?

Getting a dig in on Pagano just for the sake of it is of no use at this time IMO.
