The 49ers are narrowing their search for a new General Manager, and it appears the list is down to four...

leaving four possibilities among the previously reported candidates to work with new coach Kyle Shanahan.

...Other personnel men who have been told they won’t get a second interview include Jimmy Raye III of the Colts,

If he is in demand why don't we upgrade him to GM? I'm not sure why anyone in our front office would be in great demand except our capologist....if that's him he is doing a dang good job. We do a good job structuring contracts etc but hard to say we have a great eye for talent.

Wasn't Raye instrumental in the acquisition of Daniel Adongo?

Mike Bleum is the cap guy.

Who knows a good deal about Raye? Does anyone know of players he had a large hand in on drafting? Just wondering about his scouting and football knowledge. He may be the weak link for all we know.

Don't know what he had to do with Adongo, but Grigson has said he's basically in charge of UDFAs after the draft.

The Colts have a process in place, led by Vice President of Football Operations Jimmy Raye.  According to General Manager Ryan Grigson, Raye has “complete autonomy” over the college free agent effort. The Colts maintain a garden-variety draft board where they rank players according to their draft value. But they also keep what they refer to as a “back board,” where they track prospects they see as priority free agents. As in the case of Kerr, the sales job on those players can start even before the draft.

“We reach out to those guys and recruit them,” Grigson said. “We’re really proud of that. We call it the draft after the draft.”

And, boy, has that draft been fruitful. Receiver Griff Whalen was among undrafted players in 2012. In 2014 alone, five such players made the roster: Kerr, center Jon Harrison, running back Zurlon Tipton, safety Dewey McDonald and cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy. Last year, Varga, return man Quan Bray and linebacker Junior Sylvestre (before being placed on injured reserve) made the cut.

Before the 2015 season, he did a series of videos breaking down some of their young players. One of the videos was on Mewhort, and Raye said they identified him as a guard prospect, not a tackle, which I agreed with prior to the draft. Then they plugged him in at tackle to start the 2015 season, which, IMO, made no sense.

Gotcha. Wasn't sure what his claim to fame is because it isn't like we've hit home runs in our drafts. Seems he is very good with recruiting these undrsfted free agents and his evaluation of some later round guys. It would be really nice if we could get like a behind the scenes of these scouts and how they analyzed the draft and made our picks. Be interesting to see who is responsible for some of our duds and who is wanting what guys and why we pass. Can't happen because that info is too important to get out but man I'd pay to watch that.
