Then it's the Old Colts by a landslide every time, because they measured up and dominated against Jim Brown's Browns,  Lombardi's Packers, and the Giants that had Pat Summerall, Sam Huff, Frank Gifford, and Rosey Grier.  The modern ones lined up against the AFC South.

That old Colts era was pretty special. Look at the Hall of Famers , Championships, and even Championship losses that were historic. As you pointed out ,all in the era of other dominant teams.

Gino should probably be in over Freeney as he is a HOFamer. I chose Booger just because after we picked him up in 2006 he started to contribute late in the season into the Playoffs stopping the run. I like the fact he was a legit 300 pounder as well. He was only in Indy for 1 season though.

He also won a SB in Tampa Bay which is a plus.

Great stuff! I love history of the game type stuff. I would love to put an all-time Indianapolis Colts team vs a Baltimore Colts team. That would be interesting. You would have Unitas vs Peyton then others.

My hero was Unitas, but I really respect and like Manning. Very tough choice. Luck is a great kid. I hope his career is closer to Unitas and Manning , than Bert Jones, although Bert was no slouch.

Yeah the old Baltimore team had tons of Great players like Unitas, Parker, Mackey, Gino, Berry, Bert, etc.. and Indianapolis has had Peyton, Marvin, Freeney, Mathis, Reggie, Bob, and now Andrew etc.. Fans in here should really appreciate how spoiled we have been. Ok we aren't the Patriots haha.

I guess other than that Tiger Irsay era , we have been blessed with some pretty good football since around 1957. I started following closely in 1960 , so I "missed" 2 glory years.

Tarik Glenn was an excellent tackle, except he was prone to false starts at the worst times.

Is that Albert Bentley in your pic? I got to eat dinner with him once back when they let you attend the awards banquet as part of the fan club. Nice guy.

Yes, it is (the great) Albert Bentley - one of the most underrated running backs in Colt's history.

They never used him like they should have. When they got Dickerson he hardly got the ball anymore. He was a good player though. Played on the first Miami title team, the one that Tom Osborne went for 2 to win .

Tiger did have three good years in 75,76, and 77 when we won AFC East Championships, but mostly not so good football.

The Colts won in 58 and 59, lost NFL Championship game in 64, got ripped off to GB on crappy FG call in  65, went 11-1-2 and didn't make playoffs in 67, went 13-1 in 68 winning NFL Championship then losing Super Bowl 3, won Super Bowl 5 in 1970, and lost in AFC Championship game in 71 to Miami. Pretty good run.

The Patriots have really only been good since 2001. Their history from 1960 to 2001 is pretty bleak. The Colts history is much richer in Hall of Famers historically.

The old Baltimore Colts have had a much better record historically against the Patriots than in Indy. That being said, the Patriots have been a thorn in the side of the current Baltimore team, the Ravens also.

I never will...  I work with a Packers fan.

I still remember watching that game when I was around 16 years old. The TV was not getting great reception (could be there was fog at the game also) and that kick looked wide to me.  As I remember the announcers never questioned whether it was really good. Later on the news they started showing replays as to whether or not it was good. Pretty sure they extended the goal posts the following year.

We had two black and white tvs by the late sixties. All games were at 2pm. My sister watched NBC and the Jets downstairs, while I watched my Colts on CBS upstairs.

I still say that's why the Colts were allowed to move. After the 1970 merger, games except in Baltimore started at 1pm. Baltimore Blue Laws kept Sunday games at 2pm because tailgaters took all the church parking lots.  NFL grew tired of 1pm games, plus Baltimore's 2pm exception.

It was a brutal loss. I think that was also the Matte wrist band game as Unitas and Cuozzo were injured.

I blamed Irsay totally for a long time, but looking back on it, our politicians should have built a stadium going back to when Rosenbloom was there. The 2PM Blue laws were *ic and backward for the times. The 70's and 80's weren't a good economic time for Baltimore, and the politicians are as bad now, as they were back then.

Can't compare them.  Different eras.  I LOVE the old Baltimore ones much better,  but competition and rules were totally different. The old guys weren't protected like today's.  They were tougher, but nowhere nearly as athletic as today's.  They also had to have side jobs- the pay was horrific.  So was the nutrition and training.

It's like matching Shaq against Wilt.  Can't do it because the refereeing was different. And you'd have to include the fight after the game, too....

You should hear me sing in the shower or my truck!

I've got a saxophone too, from when I messed around with it in 5th grade.  Let's just say, Kenny is the better musician!

Yeah for sure was the wrist band game.. And Colts knocked Star out on the first play from scrimmage. Pack fumbled and Shinnick ran it back for a TD. Starr tried to make the tackle and never played another down in that game.

    • Rick Venturi today on the radio said he is more of a fan of speed with corners then what Ballard has done. He said young corners have to be able to recover from mistakes. I would almost like rodgers instead of Brent’s.
    • BBZ, what do you mean when you say Brents will be successfully targeted because of his size and speed? Aren't those his good traits?
    • Right. But we also are expected to draft a corner, So the fact that DeJean can play either position, makes me think Ballard could have his eye on him.
    • As a Ballard type player, he seems to fit the bill.  Big 10. Excels at zone coverage. Elite athlete. Special Teams standout, Good tackler. etc. Colts may be able to trade back, and still land DeJean   Considered one of the Safest picks. Seven 2024 NFL Draft Prospects Who Are Safest Bets to Succeed at Next Level https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10113875-7-2024-nfl-draft-prospects-who-are-safest-bets-to-succeed-at-next-level   DB Cooper DeJean, Iowa   A fractured fibula during a November practice tempered any excitement regarding Cooper DeJean's draft status. So he's not been in the same conversations as the class' top defensive backs, specifically Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell and Alabama's Terrion Arnold. DeJean's profile projects just as well or better than the aforementioned cornerbacks.   Three specific attributes set DeJean's floor higher than anyone else among the back end.   First, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year presents the positional flexibility and traits to start at cornerback or safety at the professional level, with B/R's Cory Giddings highlighting his coverage skills:   "DeJean excels in zone coverage, but he's versatile enough to play man as well. He shows a smooth backpedal and the ability to keep his leverage and quick footwork with few wasted steps. Although he transitions well, there are times where DeJean hops into his breaks; allowing a step of separation.   "When in zone, DeJean does a great job of reading and reacting to the quarterback's eyes. Pairing that skill set with his route recognition, he often puts himself in good position with leverage and positioning.   "While working downfield, DeJean has the strength necessary to hand-fight with tight ends and bigger receivers, as well as the speed necessary to carry twitchier receivers downfield. He also does a very good job of locating the ball and playing through the catch point."   Second, the high school track standout is an elite athlete who captured Iowa state titles in the long jump and 100-meter dash. Many expected him to blow the doors off Lucas Oil Stadium. Unfortunately, he wasn't ready to test in Indianapolis after being cleared a few weeks earlier.   "His acceleration is incredibly fluid and super powerful," NFL combine trainer Jordan Luallen told The Athletic's Bruce Feldman last summer. "He's the best athlete I've seen in person, pound for pound."   Finally, DeJean adds significant value as an elite collegiate returner. Big Ten coaches also awarded him Return Specialist of the Year this past season. DeJean averaged 13.1 yards per punt return over the last two seasons. A top-notch contributor anywhere along the defensive backfield and on special teams will provide excellent value in the NFL.   Potential Landing Spots: Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles
    • He could, but I think he's way more athletic than people give him credit for and projects way better as CB. Definitely could be a good safety, but I think if we drafted him, he fits well as a boundary corner for us.
