The Pat McAfee winning streak continues...

While I think that Skip's idea of eliminating field goal kicking all together from football entirely is crazy & will never ever happen, Mr. Bayless wasn't really talking about him [Pat McAfee] or Adam IMO.

Think more about Bruce Arians throwing down his call sheet in disgust last night. That's what Skip is talking about. Unproven guys who all they have to do is kick the ball right down the middle & they shank the darn ball.

There are times when FG kickers end playoff runs like Blair Walsh in Minnesota vs Seattle last yr. or Bills kicker Scott Norwood "wide right" SB kick in 1991 that crush championship dreams, but for the most part, I cut them some slack on misses.

Pat, just because Skip has a foolish opinion on a topic, it doesn't make him a [what you called him] just severely misguided that's all.

I get that.  But RGIII over Luck?  Seriously?  That's more of a miscue than what he said yesterday to me.

Also, I have to say this: Yes, Pat does an incredible job punting the ball in INDY for years & yes, you perform flawlessly holding down the ball for Adam to kick the ball for 3 points on a FG or a PAT after generating 6 points in the end zone.

However, the last time I checked Pat, you don't routinely kick FGs for INDY. I'm sure you could fill in nicely if called upon to do so in a game. I'm absolutely certain of it. The point is FGs are Adam's domain & claim to fame not necessarily yours.

So, just because John Elway was a SB winning QB for the Broncos with no longterm front office experience does that mean John is a * too because that old guy won a SB in Denver in the front office without say 20 yrs of experience as a GM too? Hmmm...You might want to re-evaluate that position. Just saying.

Bayless is clueless as usual.

He STILL refuses to admit that he was wrong about RGIII being the better pick over Luck.  I mean C'MON Skip!

Yeah, I can't argue with this point at all. Skip does struggle with admitting when he is wrong [Tim Tebow, RG3, & King James Championship Credentials.]

In addition, he just can't let stuff go either like Ray Allen's clutch shot against his NBA Spurs or Floyd Mayweather beating Manny Pacquiao in the boxing ring.

Look, I get why athletes have disdain for Skip. His love for the Dallas Cowboys, which proves he's off his rocker right there. LOL! His preference to undercut Andrew Luck every chance he gets mocking his HOF status. That does royally tick me off, even I can't mask that contempt toward Bayless for that.

His obsession with MJ since he covered him & his remarkable career in Chicago. He'll give Brett Favre a pass on all his picks, but Terrell Owens with HOF NFL numbers is the anti-Christ. Really? TO was a model citizen in Cincinnati & Buffalo, but of course Skip never brings that up or that HOF eligibility is based on sustained production numbers not media or locker room popularity.

He thinks Tom Brady can do no wrong & that we are all supposed to crap our pants & be paralyzed with fear just because Tommy is angry now. Ooh, I'm quaking in my boots aren't you? Yeah, me neither. Oh BTW, how do reconcile your NE & Dallas Bro-mance side by side so well with no backlash from either fanbase over dual loyalties? Just curious.

And Skip never presents the whole picture just a skewed version of what fits his argument, but then he pretends he has done no such thing when you point this crucial fact out for all to see. Most people when cornered, own their tailored perspective. Not Skip. He plays the innocent & naive routine to perfection, when we all know he got busted or schooled but he's too prideful to admit it.

Before you dismiss Pat's ability to kick field goals maybe it would be a good idea to look at his past history. He was kicking field goals of 65 yards and won the national field goal competition dating all the way back to high school. I know he is not Adam (but who is) but he is fully capable of being a field goal kicker and more than likely will become one at a later age.

If you have ever seen him at Colts camp you would know he kicks 60 and 70 yards field goals pretty regular.

Until Pat gets called on to kick field goals regularly in game action, His success in a camp environment or in warm ups, don't mean much to me at all.

I'm not doubting his accuracy, range, or strength CC1. Just that with no pressure comes no expectations & until Pat gets placed in the role in meaningful games that matter; successful kicks for fun are like winning a poker game with no money on the table. Not relevant at all.

His career as a field goal kicker before becoming a punter was game action.

Even though it was college it was still action just the same. It was not done for fun either.

No one wins the national field goal award without having the talent to kick field goals.

Pat just happens to be one of the best athletes on the Colts and should not be so easily dismissed.

Just saying.

Punting & FG kicking are not the same thing. Not even close. There's a reason these are 2 separate Special Teams positions & never the same guy for both roles unless your main guy is sidelined with an injury & the back guy must pull double duty out of necessity.

Aiming a football deep in enemy territory & factoring in field conditions for a long FG in rain, sleet, snow, wind, & fog are not the same thing. It's a while different animal especially in the playoffs.

Adam V. having so many consecutive FG kicks without a miss is remarkable & if both Pat & Adam switched roles tomorrow for the next 2 yrs, do you think they could match each others records of streaks? Nope. That's why they are called specialists for what they do.

What has that have to do with Pats talent and ability to kick field goals? He faced those conditions in college.

He is also listed as an emergency back up quarterback. I have also seen him play and practice linebacker in camp.

I don't think you grasp how good of a player he really is by judging him as just a punter.

I am merely pointing out that just because Pat cam Boom a punt deep; it doesn't automatically mean that McAfee could take over for Adam V & double dip successfully if Adam decided to retire from the NFL next week.

Yes, I know Pat has soccer power to kick a ball a long distance & I'm sure that he is a very gifted athlete. Okay, Pat can wear many hats. So what? There is an art to kicking FGs & not every athlete possesses that skill set in the clutch under maximum pressure when coaching careers & championships are on the line.

I think it's a mistake to create the misguided impression that any athlete can kick FGs consistently even 1 as talented as Pat.

I'm not pigeonholing the guy or boxing him into a corner at all. Yes, I saw Pat throw a perfect pass on a fake punt vs Dallas a few seasons ago & if you wanna call McAfee a swiss army knife NFL talent fine. But, clutch FG kicking yr after yr is extremely rare & strength & power alone aren't enough.

It just bothers me when fans think Pat can slide right in for Adam & not miss a beat. It's not that easy. Just ask the Bears if they miss Robbie Gould right now.

He has already been a field goal kicker and done a fine job at it. He is an award winning field goal kicker. He was a field goal kicker in high school and college.

As far as Pat sliding in as you call it that is why he practices his field goal kicking with as much effort as he does his punting. You have never seen him and how he practices. Pat,  along with Adam practice field goals together.

They practice on a separate field altogether away from the other team members.

I am quit sure Pat has leaned a lot from Adam. He holds for Adam and studies Adams every move.

I don't understand how you just dismiss these facts.

Again, it's nice to hear Pat is so versatile as an athlete & I'm not doubting his intellect to learn more than 1 playbook CC1.

But, I doubt that Pat will be taking over Erik Walden's spot in an emergency situation do you? Because, Pat's so elite at his speciality: Punting & holding the ball on FG kicks.

I minored in English as an undergrad in college too. Does that entitle me to teach lectures on the origin of language in the 20th Century in 2016? Probably not.

But he is a field goal kicker also beside a punter. I understand he hasn't attempted one yet but that is because of Adam. I have a feeling when Adam does decide to retire you will find out pretty quick that Pat is a fully capable field goal kicker.

Okay sure, you're right. I have never seen Pat practice live. That's true. I haven't. Again, I'm not calling into question his work ethic & I'm sure Adam has shown Pat a few trade secrets.

It's like being a star's understudy at a Broadway Show 4 performances per day. Until the understudy does the show for real with no net. All the guidance in the world doesn't mean squat until consistency for real rears it's head. College & high school experience mean nothing on the NFL level. Zero.

Has Pat had yrs of training to be an elite place kicker under Adam? Sure. Does this mean he's ready to be clutch in the playoffs at a moments notice as a FG kicker? Hades no.

You might be right & I could be wrong. I will confess to that.

However, there is a difference between being "capable" & demonstrating your elite quality at more than 1 pursuit or endeavor though. If Pat proves me wrong great, I just don't automatically believes that greatness comes in tidal waves though.

Athletes are competitive to a fault to excel in many different areas sure, but forgive if I'm a little reluctant to believe that Pat can flourish at punting & place kicking simultaneously when games get tight.

From my own experiences in life, what I suck at & what I excel at are not equal in scope. haha Dreams & reality seldom coincide with one another I'm afraid. Are there exceptions to the rule? Absolutely. Scarcity perpetuates doubt that's all I'm saying.

Going to have to disagree with you on this one my friend...

Although he professed his love for Vinatieri(only because he helped Tommy terrific) he said he wants field goal kicking/extra point kicking taken out of the game, which would mean all kickers including Vinatieri.

Of course McAfee has a right to be angry, he is suggesting that his teammates position be eliminated? Why would he not defend him?

McAfee is a very talented athlete as he has proven many times, as well as a backup FG kicker. For some twerp on tv to call him and his teammate "non-athletes" is absolutely absurd and he has every right to be angry.

If any players hold the same opinion and want to take the FG kicker out of the game, SCORE MORE TOUCHDOWNS!!!!

Here @southwest1 read this article it's a wonderful read on mcafee http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2014/10/24/how-pat-mcafee-became-an-nfl-punter/17815397/ he anticipated being a kicker until Pollan told him he was going too be a punter

Thanks TWF. That was a good read & I do recall reading that article before based solely off this line:

"Tim and Sally held firm: You've made a verbal commitment to Kent State, they told their son. You need to honor that." I remember because I respectfully said to his parents that a verbal commitment is not the same thing as written confirmation on the dotted line.

It was great to re-read Pat's rise to fame & prominence again. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Okay, perhaps you are right. McAfee broke the mold & he will be the 1st dual threat special teams wizard at punting & placing kicking. I stand corrected & I have never been more happy to be proven wrong. Fair enough.

My only reservation was this: You'd be hard pressed to find a McAfee clone on another NFL roster who can do double duty so well on another team. I'm just glad Pat plays for us & the horseshoe TWF.

It's cool m colts m. Friends don't always see eye to eye on everything. To me, Pat defending his teammate Adam & all FG kickers wasn't really necessary since Skip usually says controversial stuff to ruffle peoples feathers as click bait & ratings bumps.

In this case though, Bayless means it or is passionate about removing FG kicking from all NFL games. Do I agree with Skip's position? No, but I do understand say the Seahawks frustrations as a fanbase where their place kicker cannot secure a W in AZ. Even as a LB when all those tackles for a loss mean absolutely nothing now or a player gets injured in a game with no closure, no resolution, no finality. It just blows man.

The other thing that I take issue with sometimes is this belief that if a guy never played this game at an elite level he just has no frame of reference to talk about it with authority. A lot of teachers, mentors, & instructors in this league never played ball at an elite level either. Are they ill equipped to help players win rings too? Not necessarily.

All non-athlete really means is that specialists are seldom out there every down sweating it out & colliding with big bodies every down that's all.

Skip is a smuk but once in awhile, a great  while, he raises a profound question like a blind nut finding a squirrel.

Honestly I'm not sure if there's ever been what we've had in the nfl before and I'm not sure there will be another for at least a long time. We have a truly amazing special teams duo. It's not like they have been just coming on as of late they've been this way for years. We never have too worry about the. They do there thing and it's special and I think we take it for granted. I mean how many teams can say they have one of the best kickers EVER, a future HOFer and a multi pro bowl and all pro punter? If mcafee continues at the pace he is and plays for several more years he would be one of the very very few punters I would ever say that has a chance to atleast be considered for the HOF. Aside from being a top punter every year, leading the league in touch backs etc he's also huge off the field and is more involved publicly than anyone in recent memory. But only time will tell and the chances of the HOF talk are very very slim to none but I'll venture too say he's one of the more widely known colts players to fans and non fans and that leaves an impact.

McAfee's line-drive on-side kick was a thing of beauty.

Not sure I've ever seen one like it.      And that was absolutely a kick that has been practiced before.    That didn't come out of nowhere.       A thing of beauty.

We got a field goal out of it and that helped put extra pressure on the Titans.

The ways in which Pat helps this team are really hard to measure.

He's just terrific!

    • Thanks for the extra information. I'll be honest, I was working so I just glanced at the headline and didn't have time to read the article. Definitely a little misleading, but it was my bad for not actually reading it. He has all the talent in the world. If the Colts can draft him and keep his health in check and ensure there aren't real character concerns, I'd be happy.
    • So only 19-21 players with 1st rd grades and he’s willing to trade up for the right player if he’s in striking distance.  So how many of those 21 players would be available at 15 If he’s trying to strengthen the team with a difference making player in a position of need.  The key being 1st rd grade in a position of need.  I don’t see him going inside the top 5 but I think he’s going to do it somewhere starting with pick 9.  I think he would consider Bowers, Nabors , Odunze, and Turner as candidates for being the right player.  I think he will move up for one of those three players starting at pick 9 depending on how the draft falls.  19-21 is a small number and a number of those positions are not a position of need.  Can’t see him waiting. I think he likes our secondary too. I think he told us he’s prepared to move up to try for a playmaker if he falls within striking distance.  I think he’s going to do it.
    • Ballard uses the trade backs as his way of filling out the depth if you don't see him add many people in FA then you can almost bank on a trade back or two to fill roster holes
    • I've been telling y'all by things he has said previously and the way he handled FA what we would probably do.
    • I think people know I favor   a DE or corner at 15. However, how would people feel if they went Murphy? I know people see it as a strength with Buckner and Stewart. Buckner has just resigned, however he will be 31. Stewart is primarily a run first DT. By drafting Murphy, u could be getting your 3 tech of the future, and they are hard to get. If Richardon becomes a star, it might be their only chance to swing this early in the draft for a position u covet.  U could also have a great interior pass rush and therefore affecting the opposing teams Oline and in essence making the D as a whole better. We all know Ballard loves the 3tech and showed that by trading a 1st for Buckner. Could be an interesting wrinkle to the draft.
