Maybe after the first preseason game or two if he is still there. I'm interested in seeing if Ron Thompson can make an impact or Maggitt. Im not not holding my breath on either player but Im going to wait and see first. I voted yes...But not just yet

I just saw Jeff Saturday talk about Freeney still having some tread left.

is it crazy to consider a 1 year deal and give him situational duties?

not sure of the cost, but with little available talent out there, a reunion with Mathis might bbe worth a look. Assuming giving him 10-15 key plays per game max most likely.

We are old enough at OLB. I hope Maggitt is fully recovered from the hip injury. If he is we stole an OLB.

I am high on Thompson too. He has not had a lot of time rushing the QB but seems to have a knack for it. Like Freeney he forces fumbles. Thompson arrived at the Cuse a 4 star recruit at TE. He spent a yr at DT before moving out to DE. A good athelte played college bball too.

Grig's and Co. did a fine job bringing in some potential help at OLB in a bad group. I might have gone for Jenkins in the 3rd. The other players I liked we small school projects. Maggitt and Thompson are as likely as any to pan out.

The Steelers declined the option on underachieving Jarvis Jones maybe a change of scenery helps him. I just don't see any reason to get even older at OLB. Freeney is 36.

I thought we should have brought him in as a situational player the last couple years.  He was up for giving Indy a hometown discount.

At this point, he'd be expensive for what he could bring.  And he'd potentially be taking a spot away from someone we may see promise in and want to develop.

I wonder if he'd be open to coming to camp and competing for a position with any team, or if he's just going to wait to see who wants a gun for hire?

He had 8 sacks last year in 11 games. If the price was right heck, yeah!

I'm not saying he would have double-digit sacks but even 8 sacks for the year plus his experience to help younger players might be a welcome addition. It might be worth a "look-see" if no one picks him up. At worse, the Colts could say "no thanks", and at best, perhaps he could be used situation-ally (3rd/4th and long) to bring some heat.

To me the real question is whos roster spot would he take ? If a young olb shows promise during training camp and preseason anyone really think we could stash them on the PS with the huge need league wide for pass rushers ? If it was the right situation I would be all for it just don't want to see young talent not used or lost for a one year rental .

I know I'm in the minority but I mean. Freeney and Hardy and we're in good shape. Mathis, Hardy, and Freeney would be devastating for opposing QB's. Freeney showed last year he can still produce albeit in a limited role.

Greg Hardy isn't playing here

I'd take freeney as a mentor and situational pass rusher. Him and Mathis are the best at spins and dipping they can be great teachers  but I feel freeney just wants money and not to just play. If he had the same  mentality like James Harrison of the steelers who just loves the game and is willing to help I'm all for it

I don't know where you get that from, but I don't care why he plays along as he can get to the QB.

How do you know freeney doesn't love the game as much as Harrison?

Yeah I'd like if he got to the qb as well and we know he can  & I don't but for Harrison it's not about the money or the role  he's been told he won't  be playing as he used to and he's fine with it even with a small salary..i just doubt freeney would accept a deal to be situational and be paid less that's all I'm inferring bro not much of a fact just an opinion

I agree and our edge rush wasn't great last year.

I'm biased but I think we're a playoff team.  he'd bee a good guy to have in january

I think we're definitely a playoff team. But (not referring to Freeney) I feel if we had a freak coming off the edge we'd be a Super Bowl contender. Our D-Line is moving in the right direction. Anderson is going to be a cornerstone piece on our D for the next several years, and I think Ridgeway has the potential to be the other DE by his 2nd season. We just need a beast OLB.

It depends. I wouldnt want to cut a promising player to keep him on the roster, but if we lose a player in week 4 to ir and we have an open roster spot, why the hell not? That way we don't lose any young talent and we get our one yr rental on Freeney,  who can hopefully get us 6-10 sacks and maybe help us push for a playoff run.

Wow, nice back handed insult.

Not meant to be a insult to my team BUT I think we are in reset mode while our division rivals are in win now mode. Freeney is one of my favourites and it would be nice if he finished his career with a contender.

Whatever, I haven't written the Colts out of the picture yet. There were 1 bad season from a AFC championship game so it's not all doom and gloom.

Why does it matter how old someone is? All that matters is whether he can still play. We're obviously not talking about a big money, long term contract.

I should have worded my post more clearly. Typically there is a coorelation between age and productivity. When you are on the other side of 30 your production declines in the NFL.

Freeney will be 36 this year. His production is going to fall off it is only a matter of time. We have not had good luck hoping to get one more good year out of FA vets. Herreman and AJ last year.

I know Freeney had 8 sacks last year. He had 3 of those vs GB when they imploded in the desert. I didn't see a lot of Az last year so I'm not sure how consitently he got pressure. He was working with a better backend in Az that's for sure.

We will have 5 OLB's on the 53 man roster IMO. If Freeney joins Mathis we have 2 pass rush specialist offering no help vs the run. 4 of the 5 will be over 30 and offer no help on special teams. I don't like that construction.

I don't think it's realistic to think Freeney is bringing 8+

sacks to town with him. I thinks its more likely he doesn't help the pass rush much.

That's reasonable. You don't think he'll help, and that's a good reason to not want him.

There are counterarguments regarding his potential effectiveness, which have already been made in this thread. It's obviously impossible to really know, but the fact that he came back from his quad injury to have a good season in a reserve role is encouraging.

8-8 to awesome is easily done with a healthy QB...With the O-Line weighted draft, awesome we will be.
