Bjorn Werner on the Practice Squad.

The question we want to know the answer too is who's making the decisions now, because he was a bad pick for our scheme being a DE in college he was going to find it hard to adjust.

like I mentioned to another poster he was product of drafting a need immediately rather going bpa and filling in later in the draft and through UDFA or trades. We needed an edge rusher and he was a better one at that time even though he wasn't an olb so we forced him into a position. I think Grigs learned not to do that again looking back at this past draft and coming up with at least 3 solid starters in parry anderson and geathers then probably dorsett and smith. I still think Robinson and Herrera can atleast be solid depth.

Picking a DE to run OLB for us wasn't the bad pick, picking Werner was the bad pick

He just looks out of shape, slow, lost, etc etc.

I agree 100% Grig's went for need. There's only one way to learn. I think that's why we ended up with Dorsett this yr.

There is zero prof of that. Werner wasn't forced into a position. He was billed as a pass rusher......he just sucks at it.

No, we ended up with Dorsett cause Grigson is officially terrified of players with character issues as he stated before the draft he's no longer drafting character issue guys in the early rounds

To be fair a lot of GM's avoid character issue guys in the early rounds.  It's not like Grigson is the only GM who does that.

Edge rusher wasn't an immediate need until he created that void by trading away Jerry Hughes for a pack of Tareyton 100s and a Pastrami sandwich

Unless some drastic improvement takes place, I can't see Werner being on the team next year.

Herrimans and Cole should be cut too

Andre Johnson counts 7.5 against the cap in 2016. If released , we take a hit for 2.5 mill. I think without question , he goes too.

Grigson believed he was BPA, he didn't change his draft strategy after this pick.  Stop with the revisionist history.  You don't blindly go BPA it's completely flawed logic.  It's simple GM speak so they don't give away their draft strategy and answer media questions for three months leading up to the draft.  Case in point, we won't be drafting a QB in the first round if the BPA is a QB, so enough already.  Truth is, a smart GM works in combinations of needs and talents.  I think Grigson is arrogant at times in terms of his philosophies.  He has had three terrible first rounds picks to date (Wener, Dorsett and the deal for TR). However, he's had impressive late round picks.  I certainly have to hope there will be a player worthy of Grigson to take in R1 that plays C, ILB, CB, T OLB.  But maybe if we're really lucky there will be a WR sitting there when our pick comes around at 32! :)

Well in college he played a 4-3 defensive end and here he plays a 3-4 hybrid olb.

I know...that's not a big deal. Tons of guys have made that transition. And Werner has had plenty of opportunities with his hand in the dirt in a 43 and hasn't done any better.

I agree with not blindly going bpa but to look back and tell me olb wasn't a huge need and that's a big reason why he was drafted at that point then your crazy. We had let go of Dwight freeney and traded off jerry hughes. If you really think he was drafted because he was bpa and not because of need then you need to look back. How in the world can you write Dorsett off so early? Wait 3 years on a WR and that will usually tell if he's a bust not 10 games in and he has done decent when he's gotten looks and I think he will be fine coming off his injury in chuds offense. And if we get the 32nd pick in the draft because we won the superbowl I wouldn't care who we drafted....

I know. I'm just saying every player would have (veteran or not) needs to pass waivers.

True, because it is after the trade deadline during the season.

Otherwise, If the player is on a rookie contract and has not yet achieved four accrued seasons, he must go through waivers at all times.  Any player with 4 or more accrued seasons becomes a free agent.

This really needed to be said. I think so many people want to push this idea that drafting for need is a terrible idea, so they try and act like Werner was drafted for need so they can always point to that. I think he had Werner rated really high and was probably amazed he was still available, and thought he had got the steal of the draft.

If he was drafting for need, he would have taken Ogletree because all we had was Pat Angerer and Freeman. At OLB we at least had Mathis. There's no way he reached on that pick and then started going BPA after that.

Dump him grab Wiesnewski at C Scheartz at RT Sean Smith at CB.

That will cost some momey. I think we let Freeman DQ Toler Allen AJ

Really foolish to put Dorsett in with the other two mistakes. Dorsett has yet to prove himself. Your logic, being applied to Reggie Wayne, would have suggested total failure on that pick, which was also a late first rounder, but under Polian. Reggie, in those salad days, was never injured like Dorsett, but many questioned if he would ever pan out after that rookie season. Of course, it was hugely premature to judge Reggie Wayne on his rookie campaign, and it is equally foolish to do it to Dorsett, Especially since he is injured at the moment.

Werner and TR represent Grigson's major high profile errors as a GM. Grigs also has had significant success, beginning with getting Vontae Davis for a second round pick. And many others. Trashing Grigson is blood sport for many; the fact is that his track record is better than most GMs already. Just review the past five drafts for each team; you'll be amazed at how poorly a majority of the teams in the NFL have drafted.

Keep some perspective and you'll find that Grigson is a far better GM than most suggest. By no means perfect, but none are.

His thinking is odd. There were needs all over the defense that year and pass rusher was one of the top ones. He cries about Grigson not picking for need and then when he picks at a clear need position he makes up another argument out of his butt to pile on. Insisting that we should have picked the need at ILB instead of the need at OLB! And he does this by saying we had an aging Mathis as proof of why we did not need another pass rusher! It was already proven that Freeman was solid and Angerer was returning from injury, while at the same time being known as a solid LB at the time. You can just pretty much fill in the depth behind them from there I'm sure was the thinking as both players were young overall. What depth did we have or upgraded talent on deck to go along with Mathis? Nobody, and next he will cry and say we should never have been in that spot if we kept hughes. Hughes at the time could not set an edge against the run to save his life so im sure Grigson just said look let me see if i can swing a deal to upgrade the ILB depth, we have Mathis, Walden can rush a little bit so we can maintain for now and i will look at drafting a guy who can rush and set an edge. Werner was a clear need pick and I have to say Grigs passed over a number of better players. It appears he has learned though. Grigson can't win regardless of what the strategy is. Some people just don't like Grigson and that's that...He is going to have detractors whether its BPA or Need based drafting. Some more reasonable than others.

Your reading comprehension is off. I never said anything about Dorsett being a bad pick. Dorsett isn't even mentioned in my post. All I said was that Werner wasn't a "need" pick like people say. It was BPA. My basis for that is that ILB was probably a bigger need so if he wanted to draft for need, he would've taken the guy who was unanimously ranked as the top ILB. Drafting a guy who wasn't a scheme fit seems more like a BPA than reaching for need.

I mean you went into this whole thing about Polian and Wayne and how it's similar to Dorsett's situation. I don't know how you got that I was throwing Dorsett in with the TR and Werner.

The whole point of my post is that Grigson has always drafted BPA...at least in the first round.
