Jalil Brown waived/ Injury settlement reached

So Grigson doesn't like IRing people anymore? Lots of injury settlements going out this year...Or is this something new with the NFL?

This maybe the cheaper route for below average players

Not sure though, was wondering the same thing

Not all injuries are season ending/devastating type of injury.  All players salaries are protected if injured doing football duties... to a degree.  If one suffers an ACL, that is major and players will receive full salary on IR.  Other injuries are minor and not season ending/devastating. So that player is waive/injured.  If he is picked up by another team, so be it.  More often, all teams pass, and that player then goes to the teams IR list.  But, that player will be paid only until such minor injury is recovered.  Then the team will release the player from IR, where they are free to sign with anybody; except the releasing team.

Injury settlement isn't typically so much about the $$ as much as it is about the number of weeks for recovery.  Teams can hold player on IR until they have recovered where they can release them from IR. Alternatively, the team will have 5 days to agree to the time frame of weeks to recover from that injury and agree to pay for that; as an injury settlement.  Once agreed upon,  the player is released (often to waivers again) and is available for other teams and can possibly play again that season.  They can re-sign with original team but they are not allowed to return to the team until the length of the settlement passes plus another 6 weeks. So that is not likely.

Basically it seems to me (correct me if I'm wrong) that when it comes to low level players with minor injuries Grigson would just rather have the roster spot because there are a 100 players of similar ability to him that we can sign.

So say you have a low level player that is gonna be out 3 weeks.  Well you can't just up and release him while he's hurt, that's against the NFL rules.  So what you do is put him on IR and offer to pay him for those 3 weeks.  That opens up a roster spot right away and saves you money rather then paying him for the rest of the year.  For him it makes him available to be signed by another team and get back to playing. . . OR makes it so that when he's recovered we can re-sign him again when he's able to play.

Otherwise our choices are to lock this guy away for the rest of the season so he can't play (and pay him for the whole season) or to make him sit as dead weight on our roster for 3 weeks.

This. ^^^ Only exception is I think they have 10 days to reach an injury settlement.

But the point is that you can't release a player unless he can pass a physical, because, as you said, players are covered for football related injuries. The whole point of an injury settlement is to make sure the player's medical care is covered, including salary while he's unable to perform, while freeing up the roster spot for the team. This is obviously more important for players who don't have guaranteed contracts, like UDFAs.
