JACKSONVILLE -- Senior writer John Oehser checks in with a last look before the Jaguars visit the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, Sunday at 1 p.m.

Records

Jaguars (1-2), Colts (1-2).

Big picture

The Jaguars and Colts will play on Sunday with first place in the AFC South at stake.

That's one storyline for Sunday's game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, but the biggest one from a national perspective will be the health of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

Luck reportedly did not throw in practice this week because of an injury to his right (throwing) shoulder. He is listed as questionable, though Colts Head Coach Chuck Pagano said Friday he expects Luck to play. Veteran Matt Hasselbeck will start if Luck can't play.

"Every week you go into it, you know who the backup is and you show some clips of him," Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley said. "This week, it might be a little bit more real. You go into it, you prepare for Luck, you know everything that he likes to do, the style and mannerisms. But you might spend a little bit more time on Matt Hasselbeck and his demeanor and his mentality and how he goes about it and his different style.

"I think it's probably more real than a normal week, no one can argue with that, so you have to be prepared for both."

Injury front

While Luck is the major Jaguars-Colts injury story nationally, injuries continue to be a major story for the Jaguars.

Right guard Brandon Linder and wide receiver Marqise Lee were ruled out Friday, as were defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks (knee), tight end Julius Thomas (hand) and running back Denard Robinson (knee). Marks and Thomas have not played this season and Robinson missed last week's loss to the Patriots.

Rookie A.J. Cann or second-year veteran Tyler Shatley could start at guard for Linder, while veteran Tyson Alualu will continue to start at three-technique defensive tackle for Marks.

The following Jaguars players are probable for Sunday: guard Zane Beadles (finger), defensive tackle Roy Miller (knee), cornerback Davon House (lower leg), wide receiver Allen Hurns (thigh), safety Josh Evans (knee) and guard Tyler Shatley (thumb) listed. Safety Sergio Brown is doubtful with a calf injury.

Safety Johnathan Cyprien (calf), cornerback Dwayne Gratz (ankle), defensive end Andre Branch (knee) and left tackle Luke Joeckel (ankle) worked full after not playing in a loss to New England last week.

Final thought

While the absence of Luck will get mention on ESPN and NFL Network, that's not what this game is about for the Jaguars. This is the beginning of a three-game stretch against 1-2 teams, a stretch in which the Jaguars need to win more than they lose – and, perhaps as importantly, a stretch in which they need to play well. The Jaguars, as was the case two weeks ago against the Miami Dolphins in the wake of a season-opening loss to Carolina, enter Sunday's game motivated to prove themselves after losing to the New England Patriots, 51-17, last week. The Jaguars believe they're an improved team capable of being far more competitive than they were the past two seasons. This is another chance to prove that.
