I got a chance to take a closer look at him in this game.   Other portions of the preseason I had some doubts, but I think he's going to be alright. He seemed to be playing with a lot more confidence out there.  I could see more of his ability than in previous games. I think he put in some solid work overall.  No big plays made against him and I like that hustle he made in saving that touchdown after price got burnt on the slant.  I could certainly see him taking over for Butler at the least by next year.  I'm sure he'll make some solid contributions as different points during the season as well.

He played a lot better. But he was beat a couple times that would have been big plays with a halfway accurate pass. It's a tough position to play and not too many rooks step right in and do it well.

He can tackle too, which isn't always a given with some CBs.

considering he's still a ROOKIE and who's he's had to go up against in camp, I'd say he's doing alright. I've seen some of the other rookie like Trae Wayne and their struggling too. Welcome to a growns mans game where you have to humble yourself and learn all over again.

Considering he's a rookie at one of the toughest rookie positions in football getting thrown to the wolves  going up against arguably the best and deepest receving unit in the league in practice and camp. He's going to struggle early but has the right attitude and is a good tackler.

As long as he stays positive and works his butt off, taking these lumps now will just make him better in the long run.

He's your slot guy and they move Butler to number 2 next year as Toler's deal expires...... Not excited about it, but I think thats the plan going forward....

I feel like he takes over for toler and we keep butler where he is since he's a such a good nickel corner

With Toler's unknown neck status, Smith will need to grow up in a hurry.  Hopefully playing more confidently and showing more promise last night...makes him ready to be a pro!

I'm thinking(assuming he's not cut) Jalil Brown will probably get the start over Smith against Buffalo if Toler isn't ready.  We'll see I guess...

Idk if anyone was listening but the announcers covering the game were stating that they've been having him play off coverage when all he knew how to play was press and from what I saw most of his catches that he allowed in the preseason have been when he hasn't used press but played off

Yeah, he's got to be better in zone. But he seems to be getting better.

I always like man coverage better anyway.

Zone is bad with our defense we don't even have any1 who can play zone actually even Vonste isn't good at zone but put that man on an island he's shutdown I think we play zone in the preseason just to adjust during the season if we actually need to but primarily we play man 75% of the time in reg season games...kinda the reason why ppl always do little rub patterns and bunch formations across the middle to stop our great press def

One thing I noticed is that the kid can tackle. And even better he has terrific speed to catch people in a hurry.

You want him in the game when people throw short screen passes to the RBs. He and Vontae could make plays like that useless.

Not ready to start though. DB is probably the 2nd hardest position to transition to from college after QB. He needs time.

In the grand scheme of things,  the troll should be ignored.

He's mostly here looking to pick a fight.

He amuses me. Notice how he never adds anything, just criticizes others? Yet he wants us to believe he knows it all.

Well, he knows how to make me laugh, so I guess he does serve a purpose.

I have to laugh because that is EXACTLY what I had to on Madden already this year. So what happens THIS season, in 11 games Toler is leading the league with 11 INT's mainly because I didn't resign him (and I couldn'r as I didn't have money left after being forced to re-sign Luck, Hilton, Fleener and Allen.  There's also a glitch as they have Castonzo as a 1 yr.  free agent and you can't re-sign him until after the season and with the Draft picks, I won't have money to be allowed to even try to sign him.  Madden this year, by the way, is HORRIBLE with no improvements over last year and several moronic glitches throughout the game ... just total crap.

I think I would be more comfortable with Brown at this point.  Assuming who makes this team.

I agree 100%.

Don't make a strong position weaker.  Butler is a great slot/Nickel CB; he becomes less valuable outside.

Butler, when given the opportunity has struggled on the outside.  He excels in the slot.  If Toler can't go week 1, I'd be much more comfortable seeing Brown, Smith, or even Price on the outside with Butler remaining in the slot.

I am really interested to see what will happen with Vontae and Geathers this year, as I think how they are used will really impact our CB #2 and slot CB.

I think Vontae can shut down or at least severely limit just about and WR in the NFL.  If we do begin to have him just cover the other team's #1 WR, instead of having him just play on one side, I foresee it having major benefits.  Looking through our schedule there are not many teams with two really 'elite' WRs, but many with 1 guy who is elite or on the verge of it.

Really, weeks 9-13 (Denver, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh) games are the only teams I see that have two WRs that are very serious problems on the outside.

Most other weeks, we see teams with 0 or 1 really good WR on the outside and either a TE or slot WR that can pose major problems.  If Geathers shows he can neutralize most TEs by being used as a dime back/hybrid SS-LB, this should also really help our D.

For example, in week 1 -- Buffalo has Sammy Watkins who is a very good WR and Robert Woods who I think is an above average WR on the outside.  Then they have Charles Clay who I think is a good TE and Percy Harvin, who if healthy, can be very dangerous all over the field, but mostly in the slot.  In this situation, I think Vontae can stop Sammy Watkins (if they had a better QB than Tyrod Taylor, I would be very worried about any of our DBs except Vontae and maybe Toler covering Watkins).  After him in their passing game, I am most worried about Charles Clay and Percy Harvin.  I think Butler is the best suited DB on our team to hang with Percy in the slot, and hope Geathers can stop Clay (stopping TEs was a struggle for us last year as D'Qwell and others seemed to struggle in the passing game).  Woods does not scare me all that much and I think Smith or Brown can hang with him on the outside just as good as Butler could, but trust Butler would do a better job than either of the others vs. Harvin in the slot.

When we get into games like Denver with D. Thomas and E. Sanders, Tampa Bay with M. Evans and V. Jackson, etc... it is going to be tough for any #2 CB in the league to defend the 2nd WR (especially when they have a good QB -- we might luck out if Winston is still struggling come the time we play TB).

If Vontae is blanketing the number 1, Butler is handling the slot, and if we can improve our coverage against TEs (ala Geathers), that should allow us to have our safeties put a little more attention towards the 2nd CB's side of the field.  While I think Smith has potential to be as good in the slot as Butler someday, I don't think he is there yet.  However, I don't think Butler is really any better than Smith or Brown on the outside, so the most advantageous way to use him would be keep him in the slot and let the other DBs go outside.

Finally, I think the best thing that can happen for our secondary (especially if Toler is out), is to establish a serious pass rush.  With the guys on this team, I see no reason why we should not be racking up sacks and pressuring QBs which just makes covering WRs a ton easier.  If we do establish a pass rush, it makes sense that opposing QBs will be looking to dump the ball of quickly to their slot guy which is another reason to keep Butler in that spot.

    • He could, but I think he's way more athletic than people give him credit for and projects way better as CB. Definitely could be a good safety, but I think if we drafted him, he fits well as a boundary corner for us.
    • I think we need to sign a vet, but Jackson isn't it. Age and his dirty playstyle are non-starters for me.   JuJu definitely flashed pretty well in the limited games we saw him in. If he's healthy, I think he'll be a solid CB for us.   He dominated every WR at the Senior Bowl, specifically in drills that heavily skew towards WRs, often using techniques he was just really learning in the pro-bowl practices (mainly press man techniques). He dominated in the MAC and dominated at Senior Bowl practices, and with his athletic traits, he projects very well to the NFL. I see him being a dominant CB in the near future. I don't necessarily want to take a CB at 15, but I wouldn't be mad if we took Mitchell.
    • There are quite a few articles on the internet that say he may transition to safety in the NFL. Interesting reads
    • He could feel that he needs Paye to develop into a more complete edge rusher. He keeps promoting that he was great as a run defender, but needs to continue improving. He invested a 1st on him, so he could very well want to retain him. My thought on drafting an edge rusher at 15 is that it works as a hedge in the event you don’t retain Paye or if the player shows far more promise than Paye moving forward. My comment about Pierce is that he invested a good draft pick on him- so the argument could be made that had Pittman walked, he would have Pierce (although we all agree that Pierce hasn’t performed like we hoped, nor would he be a wr1 by any means). He would have options this draft had Pittman not worked out.   The idea was more behind longterm planning when Pierce was drafted. Keep them coming in the pipeline so that you have options, and ideally good ones. Remember when Phillip dorsett was drafted? Many thought at the time the idea was to add to the room and hedge in the event TY walked when his contract was up. I’m not opposed to looking at stacking premium position players in the 1st round. That provides depth at the position short term and options longterm. It lessens the burden on a 1st round rookie at those positions, giving them time to develop.
    • Crazy that the draft is a month away coming up on us quickly.
