Down To 53 And The Ps

I am just taking our current roster and putting a 'strike' through those players I think won't be around after the next cut.  Obviously, there is always a chance we add a player who gets dropped from another team to the roster, but for the sake of this, I'm pretending we are just using our current players for our 53.  The first 2 numbers are (number of players on roster/players we had on last year's final) and then the bold number is what I think we'll carry this season.

Quarterbacks (3/2/2):

Bryan Bennett, Matt Hasselbeck, Andrew Luck

I won't be surprised if Bennett makes the PS, but predict we pick up another young QB that gets cut elsewhere.

Running Backs (6/4/4): Vick Ballard, Frank Gore, Boom Herron, Josh Robinson, Zurlon Tipton, Tyler Varga

I'd love to see Varga make the team, but think he'll wind up on the PS.  Tipton has looked good on STs to me.

Fullbacks (0/1)/0:

I don't think we need a FB with Gore, plus Doyle or Allen can move to FB if need be.  This is where Varga may have the edge on Tipton, though.

Wide Receivers (8/6/5): Quan Bray, Vincent Brown, Duron Carter, Phillip Dorsett, TY Hilton, Andre Johnson, Donte Moncrief,Griff Whalen

I think we'll keep 5 this year.  Vincent Brown, I thought, was in part brought in to compete for KR/PR spot but hasn't done anything there.  Griff has 1 reception for 10 yards and a 2 point conversion.  Griff also showed last year he wasn't a good KR/PR and hasn't seemed to do anything to have changed that this year.  While I like Griff, I don't see the need for a 6th WR if he isn't going to be a stud KR/PR.  I imagine both Brown and Whalen find homes on other rosters and we try to keep Bray on our PS.

Tight Ends (5/3/3): Dwayne Allen, Jack Doyle, Coby Fleener, Sean McGrath, Eric Swoope

I was expecting Swoope to show up this year to be a serious receiving threat but that is still unproven.  I see him remaining on our PS.

Offensive Line (12/10/10): David Arkin, Anthony Castonzo, Denzelle Good, Jonotthan Harrison, Todd Herremans, Khaled Holmes, Ulrick John, Lance Louis, Jack Mewhort, Kitt O’Brien, Joe Reitz, Hugh Thornton

I sure hope we find someone who gets cut who can be an upgrade to Ulrick John, but for now I see Arkin and OBrien as the odd men out.

Defensive Line (9/7/7): Henry Anderson, Josh Chapman, Montori Hughes, Arthur Jones, Zach Kerr, Kendall Langford, David Parry, Earl Okine, Kelcy Quarles

I think Art Jones starts the season on PUP, so Quarles avoids getting cut to start the season, but when Jones returns, I think he's going to get axed.

Linebackers (14/8/9): Daniel Adongo, Trent Cole, Jerrell Freeman, Carlos Fields, Amarlo Herrera, Nate Irving, D’Qwell Jackson, Cam Johnson, Robert Mathis, Henoc Muamba, Jonathan Newsome, Junior Sylvestre, Erik Walden, Bjoern Werner

With health concerns to Mathis and Irving I think we keep an additional LB on this year's team.  I could see them PUPing Irving and possibly Mathis to start the season allowing Muamba and either Johnson or Sylvestre to come up for their special team services.

Cornerbacks (9/5/5): Jalil Brown, Darius Butler, Chance Casey, Vontae Davis, Eric Patterson, Sheldon Price, D’Joun Smith, Raymon Taylor, Greg Toler

I think Brown has outplayed Price and don't think we'd risk letting someone else pick up Smith.  I won't be shocked if we keep 6 to start the season (especially if we PUP Irving or Mathis), if the coaches feel like Price is more valuable to STs than a LBer.

Safeties (6/4/5): Mike Adams, Colt Anderson, Clayton Geathers, Winston Guy, Dwight Lowery, Dewey McDonald

I think Adams, Lowery, Geathers and Anderson are locks.  I think Dewey's contributions on STs earn him the 5th safety spot.  I wouldn't be shocked if we kept 6 CBs and 4 S's, but given Geathers' ability to play as a dime back, I think it's more likely we keep an additional S.

Specialists (3/3/3): Pat McAfee, Matt Overton, Adam Vinatieri

IMO, the best group of specialists in the league -- no need to change anything here.

Practice Squad (10): Eric Swoope, Daniel Adongo (I am pretty sure he is still eligible), Junior Sylvestre, Chance Casey, Ben Heenan, Tyler Varga, Quan Bray, Earl Okine, QB, OL

Pretty sure we'll have some outsiders on the squad, so I just listed who I think from our cuts makes it and positions for other spots.  I was pretty high on Heenan when we signed him, but don't really know how well he was doing.  If he recovers from his meniscus, I expect we'll give him a shot to stick around.  I could see Quan Bray getting scooped up by another team, but think we're pretty safe with the rest of the group.

Looks pretty accurate. I don't see Mathis or Irving being PUP'd though. Mathis may miss the first 2-3 games but he shouldn't be out longer than that. Irving should be ready week 1 from what we've heard lately.

once you practice with the team they can't pup you. Also once you come off you can't go back on. Mathis has to be on the active roster.

I don't see Tipton making the cut, but good post Mike.

me either I think they keep Varga if they keep four backs but I am willing to admit it will come down to Thursday's game. Also I wouldn't be shocked to see Brown and or Griff make it over Carter. I also won't be shocked to see Carter make it and either or both of them not too.

Right, same with Jones.  Other than that, I think Mike did a pretty good job.

I also had higher expectations for Swoope.  They're either hiding him in the preseason so they can stash him on the PS again, or they really don't trust him.

And I won't be surprised if Henoc makes the team and Herrera goes to the PS.

I find it really hard to believe that Muamba makes it over Herrera. Herrera has been coming right in after DQ and Freeman come out. I believe I've only seen Muamba in late clean up duty.

Could be.  It could also be they know what they have in Muamba and want to find out what Herrera can do.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I agree with mostly all of that, though I do think Tipton is gone and varga is in.  And I wouldn't be surprised to see us keep a 6th WR.  Though I don't quite know who'd we cut to make room for it.

The coaching staff knows what they have in Tipton and will probably go with Varga to see what

he can bring potential wise. Carter was signed on a 3 year contract so I don't see him going anywhere

soon, especially since Whalen has been a step child on this team for three years now and won't make

the cut yet again.

Thanks for the clarification!  I wasn't aware of that -- was thinking they would maybe try to play it safe with Mathis and Irving -- I guess they can be inactive but they are still going to take up roster spots then.

You really think Werner makes the team? He is horrible. I hope we don't waste another roster spot on a busted draft pick

I would not mind seeing Muamba, Sylvestre or even Cam Johnson on the squad over Werner -- but I think we owe Werner a decent chunk of $ even if we cut him and the fact he's entering his 3rd year as a first round pick leads me to believe the coaches won't want to give up just yet.  However, Grigs/Pags/staff admitted they made mistakes with T-Rich, RJF, and Landry and cut their ties with big investments -- I'd be shocked to see Werner cut, but that doesn't mean it is out of the picture.

Right, same with Jones.  Other than that, I think Mike did a pretty good job.

Herrera has been playing quite well, IMO.  I imagine he'd be scooped by another team if we tried to get him on the PS.  Henoc might be better right now, but I definitely think Herrera has more potential and upside and seems to be holding his own for now.

I thought the same thing on Swoope -- they haven't really done much with the TE's in pre-season -- so maybe Pep is hiding packages utilizing the TEs in the passing game, or maybe they are just hiding him for the PS again, or maybe Swoope is just a liability at this point.

Excellent list Mike. I had forgotten all about Heenan.  What happened?  I thought he was supposed to be a stud?

Heenan tore his meniscus -- I think on August 7 and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks (or more) from that time.

Would you keep him or Macdonald...they might only keep 4, Adams, Lowry, Geathers and ?. One of them is going to the P.S.

I don't see them everyday I just noticed Guy on punt coverage can't say the same about Dewey. That's where the final spots will go to ST's.

I think the loser goes to the PS. IMO Thursday will be important for the bubble guys.

Neither Irving or Mathis can go on PUP list for 2015.  They need to start training camp on the PUP list and then not come off the pup during TC.

It is possible to put them on the new IR to return(or whatever it's called) list.

Just to be clear it is possible for one of them to go on the Designated to Return IR list.  But I also suspect that spot is now more likely for Arthur Jones than either Irving or Mathis.

I'd keep Varga rather than Tipton and Whalen rather than Dewey McDonald. Apart from that I fully agree.

 Most excellent GM-ing!

Heenan has not been on the team since his injury.  He was released a couple of days after with an injury settlement.  He will not be on the practice squad.

I would also put Ulrick John on the PS and keep 6 WRs with Whalen being the sixth/PR/  John has looked absolutely lost this preseason and he's not ready to be on a 53 man roster.  But I will say, I don't know if he is eligible for the PS or not.

I know these are just predictions, but I'm pretty certain only about 45-48 spots are near locks.  The rest will be filled based upon the depth chart on them thus far, and the production displayed in this last game.  Some juggling may occur if some standout performances are displayed in the last game.  This is a very important game for many potential pro football players, and a crushing blow to others.  This is a tough time for teams and players that most fans don't know about or experience.

    • LOL. Got a good chuckle out of this. Allbright has Rome Odunze dropping all the way to 15
    • The Buckner extension is a tell that Ballard is preparing for a possible trade. It could be climbing the draft order or trading for a veteran player along with his draft pick. Whatever it is, you know the decision will have a major impact this season.
    • Another thing to note is the man had 17 tds in the SEC on a team where he wasn't even the primary receiver. He did this with Nabers on the team. So imagine what that looks like in these games where teams want to double Pittman.
    • He is genuine. What you see is who he is. Challenged in learning the trade through his father, he was wise to have guys like Polian to help him. He was lucky to draft Manning and his short stint with Luck. Hopefully his next break is Steichen and Richardson. He has given enough rope for Ballard to climb out of his past decision.  I hope his daughters are sorting things out to take over within the next 5 years.
    • Final Rough Draft…   (Yes on trading up a few spots)   Round 1 - #15(trade up) A. Terrion Arnold-CB(ALA) B. Dallas Turner-Edge(ALA) C. Nate Wiggins-CB(CLEM)   *Unless Colts trade up to take top WR,  Defense needs more help all around. I think Bowers(Jets)/QMitchell won’t fall to 15 and Colts could trade up for Turner!   Round 2 - #46 A. Bralen Trice-Edge(WASH) B. Kool-Aid Mckinstry-CB(ALA) C. Braden Fiske-DL(FSU)   *Kool-Aid could maybe fall this far if teams were to still question his foot injury, and Colts should take him here if they go Offense rnd 1. I think Trice would be an absolute steal here even though his measureables weren't great at the combine. He was though one of the most productive Ends in the country last year. Fiske is a Bjern clone that I wouldnt want Colts to draft, but I can see them doing so.   Round 3 - #82 A. Malachi Corley-WR(WKU) B. Javon Bullard-S(UGA) C. Khyree Jackson-CB(ORE)   *Corley, I can see as a perfect fit for Colts here. He’s not a top level wr in this draft, but just under that level. Good YAC wr that reminds me a little of Garçon. I put Bullard/Jackson this rnd even though they may not fall this far, but Colts have visited with them.   Round 4 - #117 A. Audric Estime-RB(ND) B. Brenden Rice-WR(USC) C. Mason McCormick-OG(SDSU) *Most have Colts taking the LVille rb, but I would love them to take Estime! Even though Im a homer with ND players. He would be a great #2 rb behind our OL! Colts should also take a chance on Jerrys kid with hopes of some similarities of his pops!   Round 5 - #151 A. Zac Zinter-OG(MICH) B. Roger Rosengarten-OT(WASH) C. Luke McCaffrey-WR(RICE)   *McCormick/Zinter/Rosengarten would all fit well with OL depth here. Im not 100% sold on if Kelly will ever be at his best ever again, and I still dont like the depth at RG/RT. Smith needs to remain healthy all season long! This is an extremely important year to keep our QB healthy when in the pocket! Also, why not take a chance on a McCaffrey? Hopefully Luke can be as skilled as his brothers!   Round 6 - #191 A. Kitan Oladapo-S(OREST) B. Edefuan Ulofoshio-OLB(WASH) C. Tory Taylor-P(Iowa)   *Colts should continue their streak of drafting a player whose name we all cant pronounce correctly in this round! Also a perfect time to draft Punt God if Rigo continues to struggle!   Round 7 - #234 A. Jordan Travis-QB(FSU) B. Joshua Cephus-WR(UTSA) C. Frank Gore Jr-RB(SMISS)   *Travis would be a good replacement for Sam In practices!  Also, Cephus could be a steal, even though I think he’s had some serious off the field issues. Finally, Gotta try and get Frankie Jr unless the 49ers draft him!        I am all for the Colts bringing in any IU/ND players for udfas! Aaron Casey could be one, or even Gus Bradleys son at QB.
