Donald Thomas Removed From Pup List

I'm not excited or optimistic. Reports from Indy media people suggest that Thomas still favors his leg when he walks. Maybe that's not accurate as I haven't seen it myself, but I'm not cheering this right now.

On top of that, if he gets hurt, he gets paid again. His contract is fully guaranteed as of Week 1. If he gets hurt, we can't release him and not pay him. If he has a setback, he can't be released until he passes a physical. Etc. They're basically taking a $3.5m risk that his leg will hold up. My concerns are cut in half if they've restructured his deal and we just don't know it yet. But I'm still not expecting him to stay on two feet, nor do I think anyone can go two years without playing and still perform at the same level.

We'll see...

I do not see how we could let him on the practice field with $3.5M at risk.  But, I'm very glad he is back in the mix at the same time.

I don't get into the Cap stuff that much, but what does it mean when it shows Thomas having a "Dead Cap" hit of $500,000 for 2015?

You looking on Spotrac?

That's the total amount of money that he's already been paid that has to count against the Colts cap, even if he's cut, either now or later. In this case, if Thomas were to be cut now, the Colts cap still has to account for the remaining $500K of his signing bonus that was prorated over four years. And because it's after the mid-May deadline when dead cap accounting changes, the Colts would have a $250K hit in 2015 and a $250K hit in 2016.

As of Tuesday, September 8, his $3.5m salary for 2015 is fully guaranteed. So his dead cap at that point will be $4m, assuming there have been no changes to his contract structure.

I'm genuinely suprised he hasn't been cut by now tbh. He hasn't played in 2 years and I'm not sure what they're expecting out of him this year for the 3.5mil. He's obviously going to make the final rosta or he would have been cut by now. Obviously a mute point now but what pay did Mathis end up taking and surely if you're going to take a gamble with money he was a good option in these circumstances.

There is something certainly odd going on there, as you so succinctly have pointed out now and before cutting Thomas was a no brainier, at the least restructure him.

does this mean that he could be cut before then, and the team would not have to pay the 3.5 mil?  maybe that's the plan

So long as he can pass a physical. If he gets hurt in practice, even if it's a short term thing, he can't pass a physical, and he remains on the roster beyond Sept 8, and his salary goes guaranteed.

Sept 9th he will unexpectedly come down with a season ending hang nail and be put on IR immediately.

Good news.  You can never have enough quality OL, especially this team.  BUT, when I see that the Colts COULD have had a guy like Evan Mathis for essentially what they are paying Thomas, I cringe.  Mathis is healthy even if he is older and on the downside of his career.  Thomas?  Who knows?  He could injure himself again putting on his shoes.  If Mathis has a good year in Denver this non-move will surely be speculated.  But I HOPE Thomas can produce finally.

A bit of a risk financially for someone who is a mediocre talent at this point (If that now) but outside of Reitz to this point Thomas is the best we have at this point. I understand it. Hopefully he stays healthy because he is a solid pass blocker...Or was prior to injuries

Week 1 oline. Costanzo Thomas Holmes Herreramans Mewhort

From my seat Loius has looked better than Herremans.

I'm not sure why everyone is so down on the guy. His play improved last year and that seems to have carried over to this year

Let's not forget Louis was out since 2012 after Jared Allen took him out.

That being said I wouldn't count on Thomas better hope Arkin picks it up.

Which is why I think there is no way he makes the team.
