So the fact that this issue directly impacts the Colts the first two weeks shows up by the thread ending up in the NFL section.

Things never cease to amaze me..............

As to my post.....

Yup....

Catch good breaks the first two weeks of the season.

That said,  both Buffalo's and NYJ's defenses are perhaps uniquely set-up to survive the issues so I still expects the Colts to face terrific defenses in the first two weeks.

Didn't want to start new thread, but there were more suspensions today by the NFL:

NFL hands out suspensions today

8m

  • Chargers TE Antonio Gates: 4 games for PEDs
  • Jets DT Sheldon Richardson: 4 games for substance abuse
  • Cowboys LB Rolando McClain: 4 games for substance abuse
  • Packers DE Datone Jones: 1 game for substance abuse

This suspension means that Richardson tested positive multiple times for a recreation substance (some have assumed weed but it has not been said yet which drug) as the new wrinkle in the CBA that was done after the Welker suspension was for players who test positive the first time to go into the NFL drug rehab program where they still have to continue to test positive a couple of more times before suspension. So Richardson obviously has a problem in that he has not been able to control his use of this substance to actually get suspended the four games. That would worry me more as a Jets fan or HC verses the four games this season.

Yet another that doesn't realize the NFL tests for weed only in the off season.  He's  not doing it for pain reduction...  The weed test in off season only is just for those who have never failed a drug test of any kind before.  Now these guys that failed can get tested for weed and everything else during the season as well.  SMH...  The dudes at 4 games suspensions now are just a short reach away for 10 games off and a 1 year banishment following that...  Well done. Very well done.

I believe it takes 3 failed tests though to get the 4 game suspension. First one puts you in the drug rehab program. Then you get one more time to fail and then the third enacts the suspension. Like I said, I would be more worried as a Jets fans of his ability to stop doing it as like you said the stakes are only get higher for each failed test going forward ...

Why single out the Jets?

Of course I know that. Why single out the Jets when there are other players who received similar suspensions? McClain also received a 4-game suspension for marijuana use.

This thread is about Richardson. And he is also one of their top stars on defense as well not just a marginal player so that would make me more worried as a Jets fan. But for sure for any player getting suspended for substance abuse this would be a fear for all fans and FOs.

Before asking you why you singled out the Jets, I checked the "Suspensions" thread to see if you expressed similar concern for the other players, and you had not... Gates is also a great player, though he is nearing the end of his career. McClain is not a bad player. I wondered why you were concerned only about Richardson. It seems that a large percentage of the players smoke marijuana; they just have not gotten caught.

Gates was suspended for PEDs not substance abuse. One violation for PEDs gets 4 games.

I did not say I was not concerned about McClain, I spoke about Richardson as again this thread is about HIM and as a division opponent to my team, his news is more impactful to me. But yes for sure it is a big deal for Dallas too especially since they also have Hardy out pending his appeal. But McClain is not Richardson's caliber either so it is a bigger deal for the Jets IMO.

The first two weeks of the season our offensive line will be facing Buffalo and New York without their best defensive lineman. Should we count our blessings now? I'm sure Andrew Luck is smiling somewhere.

What happened to Muhammed Wilkerson?

Gates is an interesting story.  Since the NFL won't impose a suspension if you fail the Steroids part of the test with only a stimulant (IE: Adderall, Meth, Sudafed, etc...), that means Gates had something else in his system.  Based upon age, injury and his statement, he might have taken something like DHEA, or Pregnenolone.  If one is to consider it, he might have even went the hGH route...

I feel a touch sorry for him. But I can also name quite a few OTC items (some I take too at times) that would help recovery but not alarm a urine test. (like Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Zinc, Co-Enzyme Q10, Selenium, Omega 3 fatty acid supplements, etc...).  See you week 5 Mr. Gates.

Yup, Ive pointed that out elsewhere.  Josh Gordon was my example.  My future example?  Very likely Randy Gregory... and a notable amount in between.

I did not realize that there would not be a suspension for testing positive for a stimulant. What's the punishment for that? Is it case by case? (You don't have to research it. If you don't know, just disregard the question.)

Mr. Gates will be missing the Vikings game at San Diego week 3. We could use all the help we can get. :)

It seems that marijuana use is rampant. It has been written about a lot but this morning, I was listening to my favorite sports radio host Richard Neer and he was discussing this. He read from the following article. Sixteen players who never tested positive for marijuana use were interviewed and 15 of them admitted to smoking marijuana... It seems that if all the users got caught there would be no players left to play.

Quote from the article:

Current players say marijuana use in the sport is extensive, with many using the drug to deal with the ramifications of head trauma. One player said in an interview he believes smoking marijuana helped prevent him from attempting suicide.

"It's at least 60 percent now," (Jamal) Anderson said. "That's bare minimum. That's because players today don't believe in the stigma that older people associate with smoking it. To the younger guys in the league now, smoking weed is a normal thing, like having a beer. Plus, they know that smoking it helps them with the concussions."

Interviews over the course of the past month with 16 current players revealed an NFL world where players who have not failed an NFL drug test, and therefore aren't subjected to multiple tests, smoke weed weekly after games and occasionally after tough regular-season practices.

Some of these players said many of their teammates and opponents smoke marijuana three to four times a week, depending on the time of season and the physicality of practices and games...

What's clear is that numerous players smoke weed. Some because they like it. Some because it helps them deal with the rigors of football. Some because they believe marijuana helps ease the crushing and kaleidoscopic effects of concussions. All of this is done right under the nose of the league.

I guess I should detail that- not necessarily a suspension.  During the 4 month off season, these are items on the Substance of Abuse list -

• Cocaine

• Marijuana

• "Amphetamines and its analogs"

• Opiates ("total morphine and codeine")

• Opioids ("hydrocodone, oxycodone")

• PCP

• "MDMA and its analogues"

So they are subject to the penalties under the substance abuse, not the PED policy.  Marijuana has it's own less strict punishment schedule. Substance abuse cases are treated in a medical manner.  Now in season, Meth, MDMA, Amphetamines, Adderall etc are placed back into the PED list, and treated once more as a competitive matter.

And NFL is ok with possibly letting it (Marijuana) be used medically.  Just not full legalizing it for use in the NFL.

The CBA was changed after the Welker suspension for amphetamines where substance abuse no longer carried a suspension for first offense. Instead the players were put into the drug rehab program. It takes 3 failed tests to get the first four games.

PEDs have always carried the 4 game suspension.

I understand that. This was discussed thoroughly on this forum last year.

I was questioning why testing positive for some stimulants (some which can be used as masking agents, I believe) was not subject to the same punishment as testing positive for PED use.

All this is true, but not complete.  Remember, Welker failed his test at after taking Ecstasy at the KY Derby.  So that is an off season infraction.  Should he take it during the season, he would get a 4 game suspension once more, even if it were 1st offense.

This guy was an * when Mizzu signed him out of high school and obviously he hasn't added any brain cells since. I see a prison cell or a street corner with a cardboard sign in his not too distant future.
