Some experts on this forum say rbs are not worth a first round pick anymore. since 2 were taken in this years first round do some of our forum experts know more than these 2 nfl gms?

It's going to be interesting to see how Gurley and Gordon play. Personally I'm still of a mind that the difference in a 1st round RB vs 2nd or 3rd is enough to justify taking them high in the 1st but we will see.

No they aren't. And this year's WR class was talked about as if it was the best ever.

No, it wasn't.

ESPN, NFL.com and CBS Sports,  ALL said the 2014 class of WR's was better than this one.

Everyone said this was one was very good,  but last year's was better.

I don't know where you read that,  but you should stop reading that site.

As Coleman,  I'm a fan.   But the fact that he went 73rd overall should tell you what the NFL thought of him.   Good to very good, but not great.     He was not a 1st round draft pick.

And, at some point,  the Colts had to make a commitment to defense.

I don't see what Dorsett has to do with the argument. Coleman went in the 3rd round, Coleman wasn't/isn't a 1st round talent rb, He also got picked up before we picked in the 3rd round

I think this is key

The Colts seemed to like Coleman

But...... didnt think that he was worth an early 3rd

They met with the kid and worked him out, and showed at his pro day

They knew this prospect better than any of us.......  by a mile

I do think that Coleman will be special, but......... I like who we have

I love Tevin Coleman. I really do. If I were the GM of the Colts, I probably would've snagged him instead of D'joun Smith. However, I'm also from Bloomington, and I love my IU Hoosiers, so I'm a bit biased. However, Coleman in the first is downright laughable.

Dorsett is a much better athlete than Coleman. While he is a luxury pick, we can afford to have a luxury pick every now and then.

I bet if Coleman fell to our 3rd round pick, we would've taken him. But he didn't.

If you're gonna swing on offense, you mine as well have made it a can't miss player like Coleman. He's going to do wonders down in ATL. Can you imagine the great play-action the Colts could've got going with Coleman in the backfield? I can't even believe Coleman lasted that long on the board. While I think either TJ Yeldon or Melvin Gordon are the two most talented backs that were drafted this year, I think Coleman going 73rd is laughable. This year's WR class was DEEP. So deep that Sammie Coates went 87th. The Colts could easily have gotten a quality WR later in the draft.

I disagreed with grigson when he traded a 1st for TRich.....does that make me smarter than Grigson?

And yes, taking Gurley that high in the 1st was a foolish mistake.

" The Colts should've drafted Tevin Coleman..."

Well.. We didnt.. So lets talk about Dorsett, Anderson, Greathers, etx,  instead!

Amen brother. Lets move on. I honestly hope Coleman  has a great career, and I'm also very glad the Colts drafted as they did. Except for the first round ( and Dorsett will prove to be a much more dynamic player than Coleman ), this team badly needed an infusion of defensive talent, and they got it. Bravo.

Well we didn't draft Tevin Coleman and there's nothing that can change that. Harping on what we should have done in the draft isn't going to change a thing. We have who we have and now we've got to see how they pan out. If they work out then great and if they don't work out oh well it wasn't meant to go in our favor.

Dear God...

1) is anyone not named Andrew Luck a can't miss player?

2) he lasted that long because he has a medical condition that scared teams. He may have been a 1st round talent but nobody was going to touch him in round 1 with what they knew about him. Shocking that NFL teams have access to more info than we do.

Relevant or not, I thought Grigson was going to draft Coleman early in the third. I was convinced. Then it was D'Joun Smith, and I breathed a sigh of relief. I think Coleman will be pretty good, but I didn't think he was one of the 15 best players on the board there.

I think we still go Smith and Anderson in the 3rd Geathers in the 4th Maybe if he had slipped to the 5th.

i don't think Coleman was very high on our board for a reason

Coates went 87th because he can't catch the ball He's DHB Have watched Auburn play at all? He had a drop rate of 19.1

I guess it depends on how you define Coleman not being very high on our board.

I assume he had at least a solid 3rd round grade and we went with other players -- defensive players -- because the grades were similar and we preferred defense at that point in the draft.

I think we liked Coleman,  but it's just not how things worked out.

Yeldon was actually my 5th- 6th favorite Back(Behind Gurley, Gordon, Abdullah, Johnson), I liked his creativity if the hole he was was supposed to run through was not there, I felt like he had good bu not great speed and is big enough to hold up in pass protection well once he gets that down.

I don't think this is correct.

Do you remember when you posted your 6 favorite RB's and two of them were the tiny little guy from Oregon State and the other I think was Crockett or someone else from North Dakota State, or Nowhere-ville-state....

You and I got into it because you said you thought the two unknown players would geet 1500 yards behind a good line...

That post was right before the draft.

So,  you can't now say you have 5 backs for your top 4 spots.  Gurley, Gordon,  Abdullah, Johnson and Yeldon -- that's 5.   You only have 4 spots for them.    The other two went to the free agent kids.

So,  your memory is playing tricks on you....

I'd be willing to bet that at least 80% of the players drafted in the 1st round will contribute more to their teams than Gurley or Gordon.

The only way a RB is worth a 1st round pick is if they are on Adrian Peterson's level... end of conversation. When you can get 4.5 yards per carry out of 6th rounder like Boom, what's the need to spend a 1st rounder on a RB?

....

For reference, that is a higher average than the following players: Ryan Mathews, Frank Gore, Lesean McCoy, Giovani Bernard, CJ Spiller and quite a few more...

If you invest those 1st rounders in your O-line (like the Cowboys have) almost any RB not named Trent Richardson (who was a 1st rounder funnily enough) could run for over 1,500 yards.

I'd agree with pretty much all of this, the only question to be answered is Gurley at Peterson's level, personally I don't think so and even then.. I'm still not convinced it's worth it in the 1st round.

To get back to the topic at hand, suggesting we should have drafted Coleman in the 1st, that would have been a horrible horrible move.

Ill just sum up Tevin Coleman in my opinion in 2 words from when I watched him......Donald.....Brown

Same running style

Negative Coleman much more power between the tackles. Could beat you slashing or with power , threat of the home run always there.

Im sure he will have a great career. But these days RB are plug and play. its a pass happy league now. You just need to have a serviceable back that is competent enough to block well catch and run in between the tackles. I wouldn't have invested a early round pick in Tevin.

Take Gurley out of the picture, due to his injury situation. I think Gordon is going to start and play well for the Chargers. Meanwhile, Fowler is injured, and Leonard Williams, Parker, Armstead, Erving, Ogbuehi, Ray, Dorsett, Randall and Brown are going to have a lot of work to do before they even get consistent reps, because of their rawness or the depth chart ahead of them. I definitely don't think that 25 first rounders are going to be more productive than Gordon. He's a favorite for OROY.

Now I definitely agree about taking a RB in the first round. Not because they can't produce, but because their production can be duplicated without spending such a valuable resource on a transitory commodity, and because they have shorter careers. Gordon can have a great rookie season, but in six years when he's probably not nearly as effective, Peters, Erving, Thompson, Perriman, etc., will be on second contracts with their original teams, and still in their primes.

I am just not sure we were that high on the kid. Grig's came out with the don't miss in your own back yard talk. We looked him up and down.

I certainly wouldn't have taken him over either of our 3rd rounders Smith or Anderson. I know a lot of folks didn't see CB as a huge position of need I felt it was.

I think we are agree DL was a definate position of need. We needed playmakers on D. I think we may have grabbed at least 2 in the 3rd.

As you said need may have won out over similar grades. The great thing about the draft we will probably never know.

Gurley is the only RB in this draft I felt like warranted early consideration. The knee would have caused me to pause. 6'1 225 a rare combination of speed and power when healthy. IMO the only RB in the class that may be special.

I felt like there were a couple of others that could be every down backs but nothing compared to Gurley's upside. IMO

I really liked Davis for us late but how can anyone complain about Robinson in the 6th. It's a great value pick. I feel like he could develop into an every down guy for us.

We have Gore for a year or two to find out. If not there will be a slew of RB's coming next year lead by Elliott.

I think supply and demand has as much to do with running backs slipping in the draft more than devaluing the position. There are a lot of backs and teams are leaning toward committees because it's rare to find a guy who's great at everything

The increased emphasis on the passing game being able to catch the ball, run a route and blocking makes the every down back harder to find. It's a position you see handled by committe much more resulting in the special player harder to find.

I personally was hoping Davis would fall to us in the 5th but I am pleased with Robinson he may develop into a 3 down guy. He has the strength to block, get the short yardage when you have to have and has soft hands. I'm not sure how anyone could be disappointed with him in the 6th great value that late.

We have Gore so we will be able to get a look at what Robinson can do if need be there will be a slew of backs coming out next year headed by Elliott.

id take you up on that bet, but how would we define contributions?  especially when comparing running backs to defensive line men and such?

i think gordon might do more than gurley, but it has more to do with their teams than themselves

I like Coleman and if the Colts had drafted him in the 2nd or 3rd round, I would not have been upset.  Actually I would not have been upset if they drafted him in the first round but that is only because I don't get upset about those types of things.

I don't understand the need for posters on this forum to berate Coleman though to try and make the Colts draft seem better.  Or trying to berate whom the Colts did draft to make Coleman seem better.  The Colts drafted whom they drafted, they may or may not work out.  Coleman may or may not work out for the Falcons.

Posters on this forum are proven time and time again that they really don't know what they are talking about player evaluations and yet they still want to act like they know exactly how someone will or will not perform even before the first preseason game.

I remember when this forum used to be a fun place to come and talk football.  Yes, there were disagreements and even some heated debates on topics but they usually showed the football knowledge of the posters on both sides of the debate.  Now this forum has become the Jerry Springer version of football forums, posters think they can make their point by repeating the same nonsense over and over again only more emphatically and think they are actually saying something.
