Pep and Chud

I wonder if Grigs had something in mind about drafting a star WR back when he denied teams access to interview Chud about offensive coordinator spots.

Luck has shown he is right up there with the elite QBs in the NFL and has shown ability to take games over, basically by himself.

If we stay healthy on offense, I expect Luck to break or come close to breaking the NFL record for passing yards in a single season (which he was on pace to do last  year for a while, with a compromised offense).  With a new RB, what should be an improved line (I'm interested to see what we do at RT, but we should be improved elsewhere with another year for younger guys and the addition of Herreman's), and our WR/TE corps, and Luck -- there is no reason that we should not have the most dynamic offense in the NFL.

TY performed well last year, but when Reggie was down, he struggled to do it all by himself.  With an improved Moncrief, A. Johnson, Fleener/Allen, and Dorsett, there should be no reason why TY will have to be treated like our number 1 and carry all the weight on his shoulders.

I know Pep got some offers to go to college but turned them down.  I thought he did a good job increasing his creativity last year (for the most part), and don't know if that is him more familiar with the NFL or if that is in large part due to Chud.  Anyway, if our offense is healthy and we aren't at or very near the top in the league, I think Pep needs to be reevaluated.  If Pep makes us the best offense in the league, chances that a school or another NFL team more exciting than Vanderbilt will come looking for him.  So, in many ways, I'm glad we've got Chud around as I could see him being the next solution at OC.  Part of me wishes they were more open with what exactly Chud's role is as 'associate head coach' -- I think, given his past, he has to be participating in meetings with Pep about the offense.

I really, really hope Pep (and Chud) get creative with how they use this offense.  We should have the ability to run 3 TE sets and run with Gore (and others), to run 4-5 WR sets which should be uncoverable given the speed and size of our WRs, or really any other set you can think of (2 TE/2 WR) and be able to exploit mismatches.  The only way I can see this offense being stopped is if our coordinators (or Luck) are putting us in bad formations or calling bad plays.

I think that Pep has probably been forthcoming with the FO about his desire to be HC somewhere and they realize that it's only a matter of time before he gets his shot.

Chud came in just in case Pep bolted after last season. We somehow kept him around in case Pep gets hired after this upcoming season which, I believe, will happen after Indy fields the #1 offense in the league.

It's really a great bit of business management on Jim Irsay's part, if you ask me.

I for one think Chud would be a lot better suited for this offense than Pep. That being said I hope Pep has a stellar year because so far it's been pretty disappointing; yes we had the #1 offense last year but that's greatly in part to Luck.

Chud/Pep should be able to reinvent the NFL offense with all of the weapons at their disposal. Those two guys should be so giddy, they can't sleep at night. This offense is going to be ridiculous!

I hope it is tilted toward the pass....and sneaking Gore in too.  I may be the only one who thinks the OL will be fine if healthy.  Would it be nice to see a healthy Donald Thomas?  :)

Still not sold on Pep.....

Not seeing how he could be a HC candidate

I agree. I don't see him as a "leader of men", which is a big party of being a HC.

When he actually takes the training wheels off and opens the playbook up, the offense is something special. I think least year he never ran the ball because he knew Richardson was terrible. With Gore, Herron, and Robinson he should be able to get creative.

I'm not as convinced as some that good coordinator = good HC. It's kinda a different skill set, a more strategic than a tactical role is the best way I can put it.

Exactly. More control over the team as a HC. Don't see Pep as that guy

Norv Turner & Ken Whisenhunt are great OC's. Pep needs creativity badly. The Stanford way has made him very simplistic. Run run run. There's no creative ways

He flashes every once in awhile like the TD pass to Castonzo or the DHB reverse TD catch against the Broncos the first time

Needs to be more consistent with all these weapons he's about to have come August. When Hilton gets doubled, he needs to find ways to get him the ball

Lol pep lacks so much creativity when it comes to play calling, and is terrible in situation play calling. While it wasn't all luck, it was in great part mostly luck.

College.  Pep is extremely intelligent.  I see it (head coach) without a hitch.  Get you a good defensive coordinator and he can hav an OC as well even if he wants to do the play calling.

OK...Lets go out there without plays and see what happens...:)  I get it...you don't really like Pep.  No problem.  A lot on here do not.  I do.

Lol now that wouldn't be a very smart move! Jk but I bet if we had a better O coordinator; this offense would be a lot better... I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and let him have this season before I call for his head.

I'll be honest with you.  This offense should cross the 50 every single time.  That is how good our playmakers are.  Pep may be gone on his own.  As I always say...be careful what ya wish for .  :)

Of course Luck plays a big part in it, but I think there was some good play calling given we had a pretty terrible run game and not a ton of passing weapons (especially when Reggie went down).  Another year for Moncrief, the speed of Dorsett and TY, an improved line, Frank Gore and Andre Johnson should allow Pep to get creative and allow for him to not shy away from the run.  I imagine he'll get offered some more HC jobs this year, and probably take one.  For that reason, I'm glad Chud's in the house, because it will be nice to have Luck have consistency as he starts to near the prime of his career.  I imagine it won't be long til Chud gets another shot as HC somewhere, but by that time, Luck should be calling his own plays probably anyway.

He's already been a HC candidate -- turned down Vanderbilt job last year -- if he has another year with a top 3 NFL offense, he'll be getting a lot more offers.

Pep & Chud have the offensive weapons.

Get to sharpening.

Still not sold on the running game. Part of the reason nobody could get open vs the patriots is they dropped everyone in coverage with zero respect for the colts run game.

I don't think we can be much worse than we were last year as far as the running game goes.

We didn't have Frank Gore last year. Hopefully with Thomas being back, and Herremans added, we've got some good pieces for the O-Line. I still can't believe we didn't draft a Tackle or Malcolm Brown with our first pick though.

Hopefully Grigs is in contact with La'el Collins. Rex Ryan is trying to play footsies with him at dinner, so we better keep that door open if the guy is innocent.

If Rex runs out to the tattoo parlor in the next week it could mean a Collins tattoo to go along with his Sanchez. stay tuned .

with as much autonomy as Luck has at the line of scrimmage, there's no way to know for sure who exactly called each play.  The lack of creativity could just as easily be due to Luck's inexperience leading him to audible into bad plays at the wrong times.  You have no way of knowing for sure, so when you criticize the playcalling you're criticizing both Pep AND Luck.

It's a new year and you're singing the same old song......

I think you'll find that the offense will look completely different if/when we have two things that we haven't had in either of Pep's first two years.

One.     A quality running back.

Two.     A quality offensive line.

People here complaining about Pep not being able to do this and that completely miss the point that's right in front of them.

Without those two things,  the offense is never going to be all that it can be.....

No.    The GREAT coaches can.

If you want to measure everyone by Bellicheck,  be my guest.

You'll find most everyone pales in comparison.

And in case you didn't notice -- and you didn't -- the Colts offense was among the league leaders throughout the season.     How did that happen if Pep is so poor?

We went to the AFC Championship game with no running game and a limited passing game when Reggie was down....    Again,  our offense cranked out enough in the first few rounds.

Sounds like a good coach who covered his shortcomings.

Oh,  we didn't get to the Super Bowl.    Oh, darn.    Pep must suck......

#1 Offense: 80% Andrew Luck, especially after the Shipley benching and the whooping Ayers put on Louis in the Giants game

You're blinded by Pep. Luck really is carrying this offense. Without him, this offense is probably looking like the Titans

We, outside of Luck, had a pretty poor cast on offense the past 2 years.  I'm just going to talk about last year for now, though. Our run game struggled for 2 reasons, IMO -- (1) After Bradshaw got hurt, we had poor talent at RB, (2) Our line could not stay healthy/consistent.  The consistency part may be, in part, due to coaching changes (i.e., Shipley/Harrison/Holmes at C), but a lot was due to injury.  TY, IMO, is not a star #1 WR in this league -- he is very good, but he is better when he has someone to take attention away from him (if you look at the numbers after Reggie started battling injury last year, you will see that other than a game or 2 TY's production suffered a bit), when Reggie went down our WR corps was weak (IMO, anyway -- we had TY and then Nicks and Moncrief -- Nicks simply was not good last year and Moncrief was a rookie that didn't show up until later in the year).  Our TE's are pretty good.  Luck is very good.  In all, the talent on our offense as a whole was inferior to many teams in the league, yet we still had a very prolific offense -- I'd say, without a doubt, Pep covered his shortcomings (and you're right, Luck helps do that, but it's not all Luck -- he also made some pretty bone-headed plays, which were on Luck and not on Pep).

Again, we're lucky to have Luck, he should get lots of credit -- but you can't just discard the fact that our offense wasn't that good and yet we still wound up as a top total offense.  Pep claimed to want to have a balanced attack, and our weapons to run just weren't there so he masked it by putting the ball in Luck's hands and opening up the passing offense.  Both should get credit (and probably Chud or anyone else who was significantly helping Pep off the field).  I don't buy the Shipley argument and don't understand how Louis (who plays a different position) follows Shipley's name in that sentence.  Shipley was playing OK -- the four games we played with Shipley as a starter in the beginning of the year, we lost two the two above-average teams (Denver and Philly) and then we beat two of the worst teams in the league (Jacksonville and the Titans).  Harrison took over and had to play against much better defenses than TEN or JAC to start -- Baltimore, Texans, Cincy, and Pittsburgh to start out.  Harrison may have struggled some, but I can assure you the offense didn't go from 50% Luck to 80% Luck because Shipley wasn't on the field.

I agree with most of what your saying, and I think this year should be telling -- he has legitimate weapons and (if healthy) a line that should be much improved.  I think he'll know how to make this the top offense in the league, if he does he might be gone due to getting head coaching offers elsewhere, if he doesn't have us at or near the top, he might be gone due to not meeting expectations.

"Run run run" ???

Adjusted for gameflow, the Colts were the pass heaviest teams in the NFL (click the link, read Andrew Luck paragraph). Even off basic stats, Andrew Luck had the third most pass attempts in the leage.

I have no idea where you get the idea that we were a "Run run run" team last year.

    • 2006 has that winning 11 games is enough mentality like so many here. Having a SB level right side of our o-line should be priority one. We are far from it.  We need a shutdown corner that can go man on the many great 4.3 running WR's. This simply allows the deep safety to defend everything else. Instead of Ballard sticking him in the middle of the field knowing that one of his slow corners will get beat deep.  We need a LB for development and depth that can cover better.  And yes a 3rd receiver that gets open quick that can take also threaten deep.  With faster, better players on D, Gus could blitz 5 more times a game to get the pressure we need.  I have No Doubt Steichen has taken Ownership, Ballard and his staff to school regarding what we have and what we need.   Pray that 4-5 of our current very young players can become really solid by seasons end. Plus 3-4 really nice draft picks and 2025 and beyond we can be reckoned with.  We need to be amongst the very Best at running the dang ball and pass blocking.   I think if I could move back 5 spots and take Mims at RT and move Smith over that would be great.  Then use the necessary draft capital to get LB Cooper and CB from Rutgers Melton. I would expect Ballard to take Leggett over a CB. That would be a good move to.  I would feel really good about our prospects.
    • I couldn't agree more with the bolded statement.  Once a player is on the team, the only thing his draft position does for him (aside from the money) is maybe give him a little more time to develop.  Mainly because teams are reluctant to admit that their research didn't pan out and they want to see their guy succeed.   As far as defense, I feel the number one responsibility of the GM and the coach is to help the franchise QB be the franchise QB, if you get what I mean.  And until that's proven, if it means sacrificing a need on defense in order to enhance the QB's arsenal, so be it.  But that's just me...
    • Yeah I didn’t get the impression he felt a huge need to draft a CB.    He was asked about mentioning YAC guys and he said every team wants them. The Colts have had meetings with the two top YAC guys in the draft - Brock Bowers and Malachi Corley. I absolutely think we’re taking Bowers if he falls to us and I even think we may jump up a couple of picks to land him.    If Bowers gets taken ahead of us I feel pretty certain we’re trading back hoping to land another 3rd rounder.    I didn’t catch if they were talking about draft targets or players already on the roster when they talked about on dimensional guys? My initial thought was Pierce.    I think it’s a given we’re taking at least one Olineman this draft, but that’s not really anything new.
    • My guesses based on this presser:   - Ballard will NOT draft a CB in the 1st... maybe at all? Everything he's saying seems to suggest he likes the group we have and he wants to see them play and have a chance to develop. I'm almost certain if Mitchell for example is there at 15... we pass on him... either for trade back or for an offensive weapon... or DE? - Ballard WILL trade back. If not in the 1st... then later in the draft... but most probably in the 1st. IMO he pretty much advertised to his potential customers by telling them how many 1st round grades he has. Teams 19-21 are welcome to call and will receive warm greetings from Ballard. Rams, Steelers, Dolphins?  - He seemed to be talking about a specific someone one dimensional offensive weapon when he was talking about them just having had a meeting about a certain player... about whether them and the coaching staff see the way he can be used the same way... and if they agree on this, IMO this is a potential target for the Colts. The names that come to mind - Brian Thomas Jr and Xavier Worthy... A lot of the other WRs are more well rounded...  - The Colts LOVE the OL class both at the top and in depth. I have seen some OL experts suggest there might be 10 starting centers in this draft... and the OTs class in the 1st is like nothing I've ever seen. Can we draft an OL in the 1st? Doubt it... but absolutely expect a few shots on day 2 and 3.
    • We have TWO top 10 tackles in Raimann and Smith though? We need depth, sure, but I hope we’re not looking for depth in the 1st round…
