How many here think Werner is a bust?

I started to come around last year when he showed flashes against admittedly inept opponents, but he folded. I called him a bust before last season even started, and I should never have been convinced otherwise. I think we see the same thing with him that we saw in the closing games last year. Him not playing very much at all, and leaving the team after 2015.

the whole 2013 draft class for pass rushers was weak, but I do remember something about werner having the most sacks or something along those lines somewhere. if anyone can help me out, that would be great. i dont know if that helps his case or not, but it does go to show that that was just a bad draft class for pass rushers

nowhere near a bust considering he's got valure to the team currently as an edge setter with some pass rush ability.....disappointment as a pure pass rusher though...but it's still early.

now how many times was he "just this close" to getting a sack" last year?

too many to recall.

Grantland says we should trade him

29. Indianapolis Colts

Colts send: 2015-1-29, 2015-2-61, 2016-1, Bjoern Werner
Washington sends: 2015-1-5

Let’s put the Colts all in for Leonard Williams. Brian Burke’s excellent Bayesian mock draft tool estimates there’s a 24 percent chance he’s still on the board at no. 5, where Washington is actually relatively set up front. Washington invested in Jason Hatcher and Stephen Paea at defensive end during the last two offseasons, and while Williams will likely prove to be better than either, it would be tough for Scot McCloughan to justify using so many of the limited assets available to him in one spot with holes elsewhere on the roster.

The Colts, though? They still need run defenders. Williams would give Chuck Pagano a mammoth piece for his front seven, a stout 5-technique end who would step in across from Arthur Jones and give the Colts a fighting chance against LeGarrette Blount when the Patriots and Colts inevitably face off in the playoffs again in 2015. Kendall Langford is sufficiently cheap enough to move into a rotation role. Two first-rounders would be a lot to give up for a defensive lineman, but given the likelihood that those picks will each fall in the twenties, it’s not quite as severe as it might seem on first glance. Indy would also send Werner as a pass-rush flier to Washington.

As a first round pick, an edge rusher, as the "Man" to eventually replace Robert Mathis...

A bust? Yeah pretty much!

As a guy that can become a good player, maybe a difference maker at another position, maybe the replacement for Walden?

Maybe! I think this is a make or break season for him!

Will he ever play up to his first round expectations?

Unlikely, but he may become a good player long term, we shall see.

I dont think hes a bust. Hes been a very mediocre pass rusher, but hes done everything else well. The problem is he was drafted in the first round, and he was drafted to rush the passer. Sometimes you dont get what you pay for, but hes not completely useless either.

Some fans just need to get past the fact we used a first on him and see him for what he is. Not like any of the other pass rushers in that class were worth a first, either, and Ziggy Ansah is the only guy who has been productive in the sack category. We could have traded up for Dion Jordan...thats the definition of a bust, imo.

Too early to tell.  We had very high expectations of him to be the replacement of Mathis and/or Freeney (both potential HOFers).  The fact that he hasn't looked like a HOFer and that's what we were expecting might mean he is a bust.

He has been hampered by injury, which doesn't help.  I think the plan was to slowly let him find his way into our system -- Mathis' suspension and injury last year forced him into action.  Mathis had the best year of his career the year before, not many players in the league could have stepped into the shoes Werner was expected to fill and actually fill them.

I try to not forget that he had very limited American Football experience prior to his time at FSU.  He came into our team as a very raw player.  He doesn't seem to have the speed that Mathis/Freeney had in their prime, so I don't know if he can ever fill their shoes as a pass-rushing specialist.  However, Freeney was always a liability against the run and Mathis has been (less so than Freeney) a liability against the run most of his career.  Werner is bigger than them and has more potential at being an edge setter.

I think Werner can be a very good all-around football player.  He might not ever become and elite pass rusher or an elite edge setter, but he has above average ability to do both.  In my opinion, it will be up to him to improve, but also up to the coaches to find the proper way to utilize him.  I'm not ready to write him off as a bust yet.

I wont completely call him a bust, its way too early for that but here's what's up. Werner is a really good backup/rotational OLB. A good team needs a guy like him or Walden to play the run, set the edge, etc. But that's what he is. He's alright against the run, but I don't ever see him being a double digit sack guy. We basically drafted an Erik Walden type OLB in the 1st round. As of now he definitely wasn't worth the pick IMO, but again I wont call him a bust just yet. At least not until this time next year.

No thank you.

In another article, Grantland talks about how smart it is to pool draft picks and increase your odds of getting a good player. Then they say we should spend three top 61 picks plus a young edge player on one player (a DL who can't rush the passer, by the way). Nope. There isn't a player in this draft that I'd give up that kind of haul for.

Agreed.....110%

Hell, we could just package our 1st this year and next year WITHOUT the additional 2nd rounder and Werner....and make a run at Justin Houston....who CAN rush the passer.
