I charted D.J. Humphries vs FSU

Recommended Posts

I gave 3 types of grades. Positive, negative, and AFP (away from play).

SLD = Second level defender

I'll also have a few .gifs linked to play I think stand out.

1. Run block - Positive.

2. Pass block - AFP.

3. Pass block - Positive.

4. Pass block - AFP.

5. Run block - Positive

6. Pass block - Positive. Does a good job of taking on EDGE1 before setting wide and attempting to take on EDGE2. EDGE2 loops around and Humphries joins the guard in blocking out EDGE1.

7. Run block - Positive. Gets to 2nd level and seals of SLD.

8. Pass block - AFP.

9. Run block - AFP.

10. Pass block - Postive.

11. Pass block - Positive.

12. Pass block - Positive.

13. Run block - Positive.

14. Screen block - AFP.

15. Pass block - Positive. Really AFP here, but he gets a positive for blowing up the EDGE.

16. Run block - Positive.

17. Run block - AFP.

18. Pass block - Positive.

19. Run block - Positive.

20. Run block - AFP.

21. Pass block - AFP.

22. Pass block - AFP.

23. Run block - Positive.

24. Pass block - Negative. Pressure allowed. Passes off first defender, slow to get to the 2nd.

25. Pass block - Negative. Pressure allowed. EDGE beats him with hand usage.

26. Run block - Negative. Gets clowned with swim move. Defender makes TFL.

27. Pass block - Positive.

28. Run block - AFP.

29. Run block - Positive.

30. Pass block - Positive.

31. Pass block - Positive.

32. Run block - Positive.

33. Run block - Negative. Missed block on SLD.

34. Pass block - Positve.

35. Run block - AFP.

36. Run block - Negative. Missed block on SLD.

37. Pass block - AFP.

38. Run block - AFP.

39. Run block - Positive. Struggled with this. It's a combo-block, but he doesn't blow up SLD like he should.

40. Pass block - Positive.

41. Pass block - Positive.

42. Pass block - Positive.

43. Run block - Negative. Doesn't drive back defender. Makes TFL.

44. Pass block - Positive.

45. Run block - AFP.

46. Pass block - AFP.

47. Run block - Positive.

48. Pass block - AFP.

49. Run block - AFP.

50. Run block - AFP.

51. Screen block - AFP.

52. Pass block - Positive.

53. Pass block - Positive.

54. Pass block - Positive.

55. Run block - Positive.

56. Run block - Positive.

57. Run block - Positive.

58. Pass block - Positive.

59. Pass block - Positive.

60. Pass block - Negative. Pressure allowed.

61. Pass block - Negative. No pressure allowed. Doesn't cut and allowed EDGE to bat ball.

62. Pass block - Positive.

63. Pass block - Negative. Pressure allowed.

64. Pass block - Positive.

65. Pass block - Positive.

66. Pass block - Positive.

So we have:

  • 4 pressures on 37 pass blocks.
  • 5 negative pass blocking plays total.
  • 4 negative blocks on 27 run plays.
  • 19 AFPs.
  • 9 total negative blocks on the 47 plays he was "involved" (as in not AFP) in.

Thanks for all the hard work,  but we need some context....

How does this performance compare to other performances of top tackles?

Is this a good grade?     A great grade?    Average?      Below average?

You get my meaning.....     were you impressed or not?     feels like you stopped your post before you completed all your thoughts....

I watched him a lot, he reminds me of Miami's Eric Flowers. Both are borderline 1st round picks, both struggled at times. Humphries was not a lock down OT, he can develop into a decent one, but he can also easily be a bust. We'd be safer to draft LSU's OT Collins in the 1st if that's where we go..

I don't have a baseline to compare it to yet. Humphries gave up for pressures in this game, for comparison, La'El Collins gave up 4 all year.

He was ok. You can tell he's incredibly strong and very athletic. He seemed hesitant when he got to the 2nd level. He'll definitely be a better guard than tackle.

FSU is a pretty good measuring stick with the future NFLers on their D-line. I thought Ereck Flowers played very well against FSU. He's a guy who really varries based on which game you watch him though. Jake Fisher played well against FSU too.
