Justin houston gets tagged

Recommended Posts

A buddy of mine told me he read somewhere that Houston wants out of KC and is even willing to wait until week 10 to sign his tender.

I heard about the not signing until week 10. He is also apparently considering filing a grievance over recieving the LB tag over the DE, which is quite a big deal over a million dollars.

I think KC could well get their 2 first rounders.

Im warming up to this idea...

I don't expect it to happen, though. Something interesting which hasn't been said much is that he plays as a SAM linebacker which means we have Mathis and his heir apparent Newsome on the other which is an ideal situation in my eyes.

Houston is as full a package as any 3-4 OLB in recent memory. He can rush the passer, stop the run and drop into coverage well. He does all this and STILL racks up 22 sacks.

He could, in theory, refuse to sign the tender and try and force a trade for less than the 2 firsts though, right?

In theory, yes. But why would he care whether a team gives up two firsts for him? That's none of his business. He wants $$$.

That would also be a bad strategy. He has no leverage in that regard.

I personally don't understand what KC is doing. Unless he just doesn't want to play there and is trying to force his way to free agency, they should have locked him up a long time ago.

Would generate more interest, and more competition for his signature. He could maybe drive up his price some.

His leverage would be he leaves at the end of the 2015 season anyway so KC can cash in now and have more picks to play with (trade up?) , or could outright refuse to sign his tender otherwise.

Maybe I am way off here?

I don't know why they waited til the deadline to tag him? If he does want out of KC I don't blame him really

Yeah, if a team wants him, they can just make an offer. I don't think there's anyway around the two firsts. KC can just hold tight, call Houston's "sitting out" bluff, and wait for it shake out in their favor.

It's my understanding that he doesn't have to sign the tag tender in order to sign an offer sheet.

I would not want to play with Alex Smith(Don't get me wrong, he is serviceable...But he aint ever going to lead a team to a SB) and only 1 legit WR  on the team I was on if I knew I could get a hefty pay day somewhere else and be courted by winning teams for my services (Example: Colts), He probably wants to go to a legit contender

How soon can teams start making offers....after March 10th?

Would it be possible to do a sign and trade perhaps? Maybe he signs the tender/contract, and we decide some form of compensation that doesn't kill us. Maybe give them our 1st this year or next and throw in a player (I know they need a WR, but I don't want to give them ours). I don't know what else they need, but I think Houston would be worth a hefty price.

    • You think the Ed Dodds you see in edited clips here is the same as the Ed Dodds who interviews with teams?   I don’t know you or anyone would think that?      He’s very much respected around the NFL which is why multiple teams ask to interview with them most every year.

    • Yeah... Richardson needs players who can separate and who can get open deep. IMO "give the inaccurate QB a contested catch receiver with large catch radius" is one of the tropes that hasn't proven to work well. Contested catches have about 50-55% success rate even with the best of contested catch receivers and with relatively accurate QBs... now if you think AR's accuracy is not good, drop that rate even more. The best way to give a relatively inaccurate QB better chance to complete passes is to give him a WR who separates and and who is open so the QB would have more of a margin for error to throw the ball a little behind or ahead or a little higher or lower than ideal. (we are not talking about uncatchable balls here... those will be uncatchable for anyone really). In that regard, one thing I would agree about is - we need WRs who have good hands and have good ball skills.   And this is ignoring that AR has indeed been pretty good with his accuracy on passes at intermediate and long range. His biggest problem coming into the league was the short stuff and he was already showing improvements in that deparment before he got injured.    And Worthy is the WR who created the most separation from anybody in this draft :
    • Richardson  accuracy  on deep balls is his strength.  Hence why you pair an elite deep threat in worthy.
