Swoope

Has anyone seen any reports about Eric Swoope?

Seems like he is a very good athlete and has the size to be a TE in the NFL, but I have not really heard much about him since training camp last year.

I was really pleased with Doyle's play last year, but certainly wouldn't mind seeing someone as athletic as Swoope come in and be a receiving threat at the TE position.

He was pretty raw coming in ... hopefully he makes a jump ... and shows something in camp.

This guy is an athletic freak. I'll definitely be watching him closely in the preseason games (assuming he males it that far). From the very little he played last year in preseason he looked like a willing blocker a smooth route runner with plenty of potential. I hope he is progressing well.

I agree, I thought he looked pretty good considering he never really played football.  If he really has the talent, it's going to be hard to hide him on the PS again this year.

Two options I'm hoping for:

1) he shows tremendous ability, we sign him and let Fleener go (giving compensatory picks). Though I like Fleener.

2) he shows tremendous ability; we trade him for picks and sign Fleener.

If Swoope becomes better than Fleener, I say trade Fleener

But only if swoope even becomes relevant. Right now he's just a project like Adongo

I highly doubt he'll be any better than Fleener (especially this year as it is his 2nd year in the NFL).  Fleener is becoming a pretty good overall TE, he still can work on blocking a bit and he still seems to have mental lapses every now and again, but he has improved each year he's been in the league and he still has room to improve.

Allen, if he can remain healthy, IMO is one of the best football players on the team and he is a very good all-around TE.  Doyle is a good blocking TE and it is very doubtful that Swoope will surpass him in his blocking ability.

My hope is Swoope shows some ability to block and really improves as a WR.  If that is the case, I could very easily see us carrying 4 TEs.  Our only 2 locks at WR are Moncrief and TY (and probably Carter).  Wayne is up in the air.  A lot of rumors have us getting a big-time veteran WR, but who knows.  If Swoope can show ability to be a decent blocker and almost serve as a 5th WR/3rd or 4th TE, I think he's got a very good chance to make this team.  I'm just kind of surprised we haven't heard much about him and his progress in the dull days of the off-season.

Fleener is not going anywhere. Nor should he.

This silly talk of him and Fleener reminds me of when we drafted Harnish.

Not that people thought he could replace Luck, but some thought we'd groom him and get draft picks for him.

The difference being that Harnish actually played football in his life. Chick, Gigs, Adongo, Harnish, Swoope... Let's see them in a real game before expecting greatness.

I said hope, not expect. Hoping he shows out good enough to get a fifth or something isn't unfathomable.

We are not going to see any good compensatory picks start flowing in until we get to where we are good across most positions and with some depth. As long as we have to keep bringing in multiple FAs who are getting decent/large size contracts to fill holes we are going to offset any average - good players we lose. That's just another reason Grigson needs to nail a large % of the draft picks going forward especially the high ones.

Swoope, and these other "project" guys, is like saying, "Hey, I've got the biggest, baddest pullin' mule in five states.  I think I'll train him up and enter him in the Kentucky Derby".  Eventually you may find one that can run, but you're going to go through an awful lot of mules to get there.
