NFL Insiders Reports Grigson is "Going To Spend BIG In FA"

When it comes to grigson, spending big does not necessarily mean we get someone of great skill.

That is because Grigson spends tons of money in medium-sized chunks and gets lots of medium talent players who are only minor upgrades on what we already have...Grigs gets ZERO impact players...ZERO difference makers. But he spends a lot of money. (Vonte Davis is the only exception I can think of.... and that was a trade, not a FA signing).

This probably comes from his years of experience doing dumpster diving and coming up with marginal players who can actually make a roster...it is what he knows.  Grigs may not have any experience reeling in 1 or 2 top IMPACT players...maybe he doesn't know how to do it.  (And Trent doesn't count...the Browns phoned HIM).

So it remains to be seen if Grigson can sign up a Suh and a Cobb, or the equivalent.

MOST likely, Grigs will have to settle for a Fairley (injury prone) and a Marshall (31 y/o and fading)...and spend the other millions on 3 or 4 similar medium talents.

No thanks on Suh. Heavy cap causality and a potential revamping of the D??? I'll pass. You can have stars but if you don't have quality depth your crap ala Broncos. Lots of nice and shiny big names and look how they turned out.

Well...

We could've signed guys like Mike Wallace or Paul Kruger or Jarius Byrd and where would that have gotten us?   Lots of money for not very much production.     That happens more often than fans realize.

The top impact guys cost lots of money and often don't bring the value of how much they're being paid.

Grigson believes in building a team with a large middle class and a strong bottom of the roster.    Because you're going to need everyone before the year is up,  as New England just showed on the last play of the Super Bowl with Butler making the pick.

But Grigson has brought a lot of solid mid-level guys who are solid contributors...     he's hit on 2 of his 3 drafts...   hopefully the 2013 draft contributes more this season.

But clearly we'll need more impact players from this draft and Free Agency.   Without a very good 2015 draft/FA we might not improve very much.

I doubt it has anything to do with that, but rather more to do with the fact that literally 95% of the roster has been turned over the past 3 years.  After 2012, when there was virtually no cap space to work with, he brought in several mid-tier FA's instead of one or 2 playmakers like most people wanted.  He did that because there were too many needs.  2013 saw 5 new starters on defense.

He's been working on the roster all that time though and now is starting to get to the point where he doesn't have to find new starters for half of the positions on defense, so instead of bringing in that many mid-tier guys, he CAN bring in 1 or 2 playmakers instead.

Doesn't this team need a ton of depth along with some talented playmakers?  I was just listening to Polian on the NFL network and he seems to think the Colts are not one step away from the superbowl, it seems like much more than that in his eyes.  The team needs to fill talent at both RB and WR along with the OL.  The D in itself needs much more than the O it seems IMO.  In essence is the draft and 40+ million in cap room enough to fill the majority of the voids the Colts needs because it seems like there is a monumental amount of voids to fill.  There's just so many questions with regards to aging players also, Redding, Wayne, Mathis and others.

Can the Colts bring in some very good playmakers whether they're big names or not, also some solid role players to add depth and do this all via FA and the draft in one year to give the Colts the push they need to beat a team like the Patriots?  Could some of the potential current depth on the team be improved greatly also with players added via this years FA and the draft to legitimately propel this team to the SB, hypothetically?
