I haven't read where many people had high expectations for him.   25-35 receptions as a 3rd or 4th WR would be good.  I think it would be a great signing.   Low risk/high reward.   Couple good seasons in the CFL.  Still young.   Great size.   I'd take him over Nicks right now just based on the size that the Colts need.    I wouldn't mind seeing Nicks back though.

I like this mostly because it may save a draft pick.   Colts may decide to draft a WR in a later round now.

Is Nicks gonna show up all season or just in playoffs ? That is his Mo and its lived out here as well.

The CFL doesn't even compare to the NFL.  He was playing against guys that, for the most part, couldn't make an NFL practice squad.  Sorry, those numbers mean very little to me.  Let's wait to see if he can translate it into the NFL before we crown him with anything.

I think the CFL can compare to the NFL in the same way college compares to the NFL.    In fact, the CFL has better quality players than college.    I assume you were fine drafting Hilton out of Florida International (a mid major conference school).    I don't think the Colts are signing Carter expecting him to reproduce the 75 catches and 1000 yards he had in the CFL.   But he is young and has potential.

That's a good question, but I think by signing Hicks, we would have some WR depth and be able to use our draft picks differently.

The majority of CFL players are the college players who didn't have what it takes to make it in the NFL.  If you are talking college as a whole, CFL is probably better.  However, there are plenty of college players that don't make it to NFL that could play in CFL and choose to do something else with their life.  If I had to put $ on it, I would take a team like Ohio St., Alabama, Oregon, etc. to beat just about any CFL team.

That said, I don't disagree with you -- like college, the CFL is a pool of talent that NFL scouts should look at, evaluate, and be willing to give a shot if they have potential.  The post I made, which you quoted, was a response to Mintor, who seems to think Carter is going to be our savior.  I had no problem with us drafting TY, he was a 3rd round pick and we didn't have any huge expectations for him -- as with most 3rd rounders, most teams are just happy to get some production from them and not counting on them to be super stars.  Like a mid-major school, very rarely, the CFL produces a very good NFL player.  My point to Mintor is, until we see it on the field, there is no reason to get overly excited about Carter.

It also must be completely irrelevant that Avery put up better numbers than Nicks, especially since he plays on the Chiefs now!

I'm defensive because people have unreal expectations.  That is all...

Goodness...

So it's unrealistic to expect Nicks to put up more than 38 catches and 400 yards (even though that's well below what anyone expected him to do prior to the season), but it's totally realistic to expect 1,000 yards and 8 TDs from Duron Carter...

Honestly I think Nicks numbers where low due to 2 reasons, 1 Donte playing well, & 2 probably more importantly a lot of 2 TE sets. There is only 1 ball and fortunate for us a lot of playmakers on this team. I think we will use them even better next year!

That might be a fair assessment, but I think we all expected more production out of him prior to the season. And just watching his play, he struggled to get separation all year long.

If Hakeem Nicks is healthy and in shape,  then neither a rookie Donte Moncrief or the two tight ends should've kept Nicks from putting up better numbers.

He had trouble separating all year and seemed lost in the system until about week 12 or so....

I don't know if he did enough in the coaches/GM's eyes to warrant bringing back,  but I don't think anyone can be happy with his year here....

Who are you to determine who's expectations are unrealistic?

Thinking Hakeem Nicks being a 4th WR and 6th Option in the Colts offense, while putting up 400 yards w/ 4 TD's is reasonable.    Asking him to put up around 700-1000 yards and 8-9 TD's is unreasonable in that same role.  It doesn't take a genius to figure that type of stuff out.  Being upset, calling him a failure is unnesscesary!  Sorry if I offended people for their lack of judgement.

See you make some sense, unlike other people.  Some seem to think Nicks was a failure based on his output.  I say they had unreasonable expectations.  I think it's a good signing also, but don't think he will put up similar numbers to Nicks if he played as a 6th option on the Colts offense.  I'm definitely in favor of bringing back Nicks!  Id like to see Reggie hang them up.  His game has fallen off alot!

You're reading the sarcasm wrong my friend!  My words aren't demanding that out of Carter, but if others' expectations were much higher with Nicks, and this Carter kid is the saving grace, then it shouldn't be too difficult for him to do that (correlating expectations with other people).  I've already told you my expectations.  Similar to what Nicks had this season.  I think the kid will be okay, but no where near as good as people making him out to be.  Also, if people question Nicks than why not hold the same standards to Carter (not my opinion, just correlating expectations)?

The 2 TE's are a mismatch for EVERY TEAM IN THE LEAGUE so I disagree there, & the coaches love Donte's size and speed he played well and earned time! They said when the drafted him they thought they got 1st round talent in the 3rd round. Given that Nicks played OK, not great & thus IMO unless Reggie retires & with Carter coming on board he probably won't be back!

Where did you read or hear that the Colts thought they got 1st round talent in Donte?

I'm a huge fan and was hoping we'd draft him,  but first round talent?     Never saw or heard that anywhere....

I'm also the biggest proponent of two tight ends for the Colts on this website.   Have been since the day I arrived.     So, telling me 2 TE's are a mismatch for EVERY TEAM IN THE LEAGUE is simply preaching to the choir.

Here's something else about that.    It's not true.  In fact, it's wrong.

If have two quality tight ends was a mismatch for every team,   then our offense would've been better,  and every team in the NFL would use a two tight end system.     But they don't.    And our offense was often sluggish despite two tight ends.

Some teams believe in a two tight end system.   And some don't.   Seattle doesn't.   New England does....

So, while I personally like it,  it's not the magic bullet for offense.

Because you don't hold a rookie out of the CFL to the same standard as you hold a five year veteran who was drafted in the first round. But even then, if Carter gets the number of snaps and targets that Nicks got this year (and there's no guarantee that he will), I would still be a little underwhelmed by 38 catches, 400 yards.

I know some people are making it seem like Carter is going to be some immediate difference maker, but if you think that's unrealistic, then we agree. A typical CFL free agent is a back of the roster kind of guy who you really shouldn't expect anything out of.

I wasn't meaning you!  Re-read opinions of Hakeem Nicks from various forum members and you will see most people are dissappointed, or frusterated!

Meh. I expected more. I understand why people would be disappointed in his production. It was meager.

Would like to jump into this conversation, if I may.

Regarding Nicks: I tend to think that where there is smoke there is fire. Pep made statements earlier in the season that Nicks was out of shape. It showed in the games. What was most telling was that Luck did not target him early in the season -- partly due to lack of chemistry, but also because Luck probably knew Nicks couldn't get open. Luck sees him every day in practice. If Nicks was an asset, he would've been targeted more, as we saw later in the season.  I don't know what to make of Nicks. If he wants to be great, he has the potential. It's whether he wants it or not, and it's hard to tell at the moment.

Two TE sets: I agree with both sides of the argument. It can be a major mismatch and the Colt's offense using two TE sets could be much better. Our O-line limits our offense, especially how we use D. Allen. He is asked to block a lot more than what would be ideal for a true dual TE threat. If we get the O-line situated, we could see a real dynamic offense. Even more than the #3 total offense we saw this year.

Fact is, it's his own fault for being in that role, he has the potential to be the #1 receiver, it's not the fans fault he fell to #4. He even started the season as the #2 receiver.

Colts GM Grigson said it after we drafted him! Good we agree on the TE's If used correctly they are mismatches! IE play calling if it sucks negates the 2 TE set. peps play calling at times is humm lets say interesting, better than last year but IMO still needs work. I think he is still trying to get people involved while learning the pro game better. Also every team has THERE SYSTEM, there isn't only one way to skin a cat. Meaning yes lots of systems work if you have the personal & coaching to make them work!

Folks putting D Carter ALREADY above a H NICKS in a potential 2015 lineup   ,,,      is comical.

Simply comical.    D Carter will likely not make this roster next year.    If he does...  it will be as a 5th string for PS player.     "RANDY MOSS'S" do not just fall off of trees...    they fall to the mid FIRST round.

Good Lord people..

While the expectations may be over the top, beating out Nicks wouldn't be shocking.

Remember, Nicks was not the #6 option all year.    If that was the case, his numbers are very good for that role.   He struggled early and moved down the depth chart.   Then moved up due to injuries.

I think (assuming Wayne retires) that Nicks and Carter could make the team.   I think I would choose Carter over Nicks right now.    It's a tough choice though.

he was a model of entitlement everywhere he went in college.  maybe he grew up but some of the things he did (or didn't do) were atrocious.

What exactly did he do that was "atrocious"?

Yayyyyyy     PK had what 11 sacks for a team that was last in the league in TOP and ....

I mean come on..    Dude is a dud.    36 tackles...       and 16  assts?   Really...    for the BIG BUCKS...

Rock on Cleveland,....

Paul Kruger had 36 tackles, 17 assists and 11 sacks

Terrell Suggs had 36 tackles, 25 assists and 12 sacks

Were those extra 8 assists and 1 sack the difference between dud and...well I don't know...what would YOU call Suggs?  Is he a dud also?

YES...       3-5 m...   IMO ...    these "guys" are not the game changers many think they are...

BUT they could be KEY in a really good team ..       I just hope Indy does not hurt themselves on TE's.   Jack D proved that the position is not as "vital" as many think.........

..

How vital a TE is would be based on the type of offense a team runs.  And even for a team that relies heavily on their TEs, they can still adjust should one of those TEs wind up injured, like the Colts last year when Allen went down or all the times NE has had to adjust after losing Gronk.  You're making a gross generalization about the use of TEs that is simply ridiculous.  Is Jimmy Graham not "vital" to the NO offense?

Who are you to determine who's expectations are unrealistic?

who are you to question what his opinion should be in regards to the expectations of others?

I think he'll get close to 1MM per season, being courted by so many drives the price up.

I doubt it. . . he's a good prospect to bring into training camp and try out that you don't have to spend a draft pick on.  So of course a lot of teams will be interested in a low risk/high reward guy.  But only at a low level of money.

I'm guessing most of the teams where offering him about the same amount of money.  His decision is for reasons other then money.

I'm just hoping he's grown up.

If he keeps his head on straight he will not be a special teams player IMO. Maybe go take a look at his film and you may be surprised.

I gotcha...just don't see what the fuss is about. I also dont just look at highlights...easy to look good in those...we've all been fooled many a times with those. I know he has a famous father but I am not expecting anything from him. Like I said...maybe make the PS. I don't see him on the 53 unless we really have problems at wr. I know we are thin so maybe that will give him a shot but I've got higher hopes for a good 16-20 rookies than him. Perhaps he will get it together...I'm just not expecting anything from him. Hope I'm suprised. It would be nice to get a difference maker so cheap.

It wasn't stated as an opinion, and I'm not surprised you jumped to that conclusion.

how could it have been taken any other way? lol

I do see people quite frequently state opinions as facts on here, so I'll give you that.  But in this case, I don't see how that's even possible.  Saying "your expectations are unrealistic" can't really be anything other than the opinion of the person making the statement. ;)

I don't think money is the reason Carter wanted to come to Indy. I think Luck is the single most reason. He is joining an already potent offense and with Wayne maybe retiring or not being close to what he once was he will get every opportunity. Most likely his father did play into the reason he picked the Colts. I am not passing out an opinion on him yet. A low risk-high potential gamble. I think it also opens up a draft pick for another position. For those who choose to take the negative road sometimes the least expected player does turn out to be very good.

The thing I don't like about this "signing?" is the fact that a kid with a dad that is very well off may not grow up as fast as most would under the same circumstances.    I don't know C Carter and I don't know the kid...   BUT........    He has been around the block more than most people will in their entire careers.     He, for whatever reason, never seems to stick?   Why?  No urgency, no pressure, daddy will always take care of you?    I hope that is not the situation.      Hopefully CC has dropped the hammer and said well young one...    an education is not your goal...       NFL?   OK...  .   EARN it.

Low risk, High reward potential...     we shall see...  but I for one...    expect NOTHING out of this dude.

Yeah, that's where I'm at with it. I've said many times that I don't like his back story, at all. But a young person can do a lot of growing up in two years. And even if he hasn't, oh well. We can wash our hands of him at any time.

I totally agree...     He or AA would be HUGE gets if it can happen in the second.    First has got to be OL or DL help.   It just has to be.

John , IMO  Coleman is the best all around RB ive seen , this is no knock on Gordon , just being honest.

    • To be clear, I have no issue with anyone trying to read into what Ballard says.   None.    My comment is ONLY regarding the Behind the Pick video series.  Thats all, only that.   Otherwise, I join with everyone here trying to figure what Ballard is saying and is there anything to read between the lines.
    • even with another injury, you think they are going to scrap AR and spend next years 1st on a new qb? I don’t… Ballard could be fired, but Steichen wouldn’t be, and a new gm isn’t going to rush it when they have a talented qb on roster. I think he’s going to get 3 years minimum, good chance of his entire rookie deal to show he is the future. Hope he holds up.
    • its not a very strong safety class, so I don’t doubt that he’s viewed as the top safety prospect, but there have been plenty of talk that several teams view him more as a corner. And he fits the corner mold here. His tackling is far better than what we had last year at the position. If anything he’s rated high as a versatile defender that can be moved around depending on circumstances (injuries, personnel, etc). I just don’t think they are going to view him as a safety, when he fits the defense as a corner. The biggest reason teams are calling him a safety is because of his man coverage struggles. They think he would fit better at safety in certain defenses. That doesn’t apply in Indy. He can play multiple spots here. And Chris Ballard loves versatility.
    • Cubs defeat Astros 7-2. Now only .5 out of 1st place.   NL Central Standings as of April 23rd: 1. Brewers 14-8 2. Cubs 14-9 3. Reds 13-10 4. Pirates 13-11 5. Cards 10-14
    • I guess media could be saying stuff that I don't hear, I should acknowledge that. I just don't think anyone sourced or serious is saying it. It doesn't seem like those opinions are based on anything reputable.    I was personally concerned that the way things went with Reich and Saturday could undermine the coaching search. It doesn't seem like that happened. The Colts interviewed a ton of good candidates, and wound up getting one of the more sought after guys. They got a highly sought after GM in 2017. There was the McDaniels treachery, but I think he was just a slimeball.    The Colts are not a big free agent destination, I don't think that has anything to do with Irsay. I think free agents sign with the team that offers the most money, almost all the time. We've seen the Colts attract QBs like Rivers, Ryan, etc. Even Baker Mayfield listed the Colts as a desired landing spot in 2022. Maybe there's a player here or there who's turned off by Irsay, but I don't think anything like that has ever been reported. Like you said, the players only say good things. Anyone who goes on the record says good things. Former players call on him to introduce them to the HOF.    I just wanted to throw out there that despite the whispers and stuff, it doesn't seem like there's any substance to the idea that the Colts operation is negatively affected by Irsay.
