This doesn't mean anything for Chuck.  This was most likely a decision made by both Chuck and Grigson so for those conspiracy theorists out there, no this is not a line in the sand for Pagano.  All this means is they didn't want to lose Chud.

Someone who gets it.

I know it might be pretty grim, but what are the chances he is almost like our insurance policy if Chuck goes south health wise.

And Chuck definitely had a lot to do with this promotion no matter the circumstances.

Zero chance that's the reasoning

This was exactly my question.

You can't put two swords in the same scabbard...

You can if you get a bigger one. Which, ironically, actually could metaphorically apply to this situation. They made a job to keep him here essentially. They did that last year, but this one sounds more official.

Very innovative...a good move.

So he is at the level of Head Coach in the Colts organization...Pep's boss, ha, ha, ha.

I don't think it is a matter of who is boss. Pagano, Pep and Chud will be working together. In reality there is only one boss and that is Irsay. He does the hiring, firing and writes the checks.

This a new title and probsbly a pay in reed to keep other teams from hiring him. Don't try to overthink it. The Colts liked what he added to the staff last year and don't want to lose him. Also the Colts know Pep is a "hot" canadit for a head coaching job. If they don't lose him this year they probably will someday sooner than later. Keeping Chud gives you a guy who can step into that poistion and soften the blow if Pep does leave. Also, and I want to stress I hope this is not an issue on several fronts, should Pagano get sick again you have a coach with head coaching experience who has been on this staff who can step in. This is about the Colts keeping a guy they didn't want to lose and protecting themselves for the future not setting up someone else to get fired.

Good for him and us. It'll be nice to have him locked up.

But my question is could Pags ever go back to DC?

if the Colts fire him at some point and another team wants him as DC sure. Will he step down and become the Colts DC? That doesn't happen and there is no reason for it to happen, his team has made the playoffs every years he's been head coach and gone a step further in the playoffs every year he's been here. Pagano is doing fine as head coach.

Lets give Andrew Luck to Bill Obrien, Ken Whisenhunt, or even Gus Bradley and then lets see how good of a coach Pagano is. He's horrible.
