Jay Cutler benched

Funny you bring up RGIII.

I think Tressman and Gruden know they are done. Hence the benching of RGIII and Cutler. Kind of low road, like you cost me my job, you're not playing for me.

Also Gruden has taken shots in press conferences at RGIII and Desean Jackson.

Yep, and Cutler's OC took shots at him too, anonymously at first, then owned up to his comments and apologized and eventually Cutler still ended up benched. It doesn't take much math to correlate the things lol.

Cutler is done in chicago, he is a coach killer he doesn't give a shi*t and is really just not that good and the management have finally figured this out. They will release him in the offseason hoping that another team will pick him up for 5-10 mil which will in turn be deducted from the 15 ml guaranteed that they owe him. If nobody signs him which im sure one team will be dumb enough to they will just bite the bullet and move on. It is a very obvious situation

An angle I overlooked: Cutler's 2016 salary is partially guaranteed for injury. So if he gets hurt in the next two weeks and the team wants to release him, they have to pay that guaranteed money anyways. His benching probably signals that they plan to release him, and they are protecting themselves from that injury guarantee, more than trying to save their jobs and/or take a look at Jimmy Clausen or shake up the offense.

I was previously about 85% sure that they'd be releasing him. Now I'm at 99%. He won't be a Bear in 2015, barring a significant development in the next two weeks.

So you blame Jay's issues on the OL?   You are totally in left field, he had "good enough" protection against NO and has for most of the year.      He has simply plain sucked.

The OC was SPOT ON on that O's issues...       He destroyed his career by saying it to who he did but the fact remains.     It is obvious what the issue with Chicago is.       It is Jay Cutler.       Plain and simple.    He just got another STAFF fired.

He is near DONE in the NFL.   He just does not want to play.    And the Bears are on the hook for 26m over the next 2 seasons for this clown.       Good luck Chicago fan.

FYI - Clausen sucks even worse.

For a moment, after the Aaron Kromer fiasco, I thought Cutler would come out with some fire and at least TRY to prove people wrong. Unfortunately, he proved any bit of support for him that is left wrong by showing he does not care.

Brian Billick was right in using the words "Jeff George" - gun of an arm with a bad attitude/approach to the game.

I wouldn't bet much on that. I loved him in South Bend, but he hasnt seen the field in a long time and it was a short week of preparation. I'll be rooting for him though

Playing the Lions, I think only bet should be on how many sacks he takes. Over 5 or Under

I know it looks like a blowout,....'J'

But the Lions aren't great in the secondary and the Bears wont turn the ball over with Jimmy C.

Word is ..some of the Bears wanted this change weeks ago

Cutlers attitude is the problem.. he shows no accountability.. ive never seen a nfl player have such a selfish attitude

I wouldn't say he shows no accountability. He frankly doesn't give a darn as long as the check clears. I'd be curious to follow him around for about 2 weeks & see what he does in the film room & how he handles constructive criticism of his game.

Hard Knocks: The Special Jay Cutler Addition...Ratings Gold Baby!

I love watching dysfunction as long as it's not a team I like & watch all season long. Plus, if a squad is unraveling before your eyes, it makes you feel better because your life no matter how boring looks fantastic by sheer comparison.

Cutler barely shows any emotion, has no leadership quality and basically does not give a damn about winning, send him to the titans haha

jay-cutler-meme.jpg

Exactly, Chad. Hey Jay, what's worse apathy & indifference? "I don't know & I don't give a crap." LOL! Man, I love watching Cutler press conferences.

Can't you just picture his wedding proposal to his finance?

"Listen, you're a good cook & gifted behind closed doors. Do you wanna walk down the aisle & stuff my face with cake or not?" Yep, Mr. Casanova.

I was thinking Tennessee, also. I think Whisenhunt would love to get his hands on a veteran QB with some arm talent. They have some weapons, too.

And I agree, they have major issues on the line, and the defense is brutal. But Cutler has been faulty for some time now. Compare him to Philip Rivers a couple years ago, and you could see that Rivers was struggling, but there weren't questions about his ability to snap out of it. Cutler is a different story. And pretty much every team has questionable protection in the NFL. Colts fans sometimes feel tortured, but it's not just us that struggles in pass pro. So you need your QB to be able to perform at a high level with noise around him, you need him to be able to throw from different arm angles, etc.

Also, to the bolded... ewww. I just watched Breaking Bad a few months ago, and... ewww.

I agree..that bolded was out of line lol....but overall I think the defense is the bigger problem over the offense. Cutler definately has problems....no doubt about that. I think you have to take the ball out of his hands and run it more honestly. He has too much Brett Favre in him but yet not enough Brett Favre if that makes sense. He isn't a guy that is going to be great at taking care of the ball....he will make big plays and can deliver the ball into places other qbs can't but he isn't a qb that can carry a team on his decision making alone. Give him about 30 throws a game instead of 40-50 and if your successful running it will limit the rush a bit and hopefully give him good down and distances....but honestly when his team is down 14-0 after the first quarter...he is going to wing it. Not saying he hasn't contributed to his team falling behind but certainly the toothless Bear defense imo is a bigger problem. Cutler can be managed...that defense...ugh needs an overhaul...a spark plug....some heart. No Urlacher, Briggs/Jennings/Tillman all old there just isn't that leadership to motivate these guys. Bears have always been known for their hard nosed workman defenses etc....and these guys couldn't carry any of the previous Bears defense's jock straps.

It looks like the dead cap would be 19 mill for releasing him, It looks like to me the right thing to do would be release him after next year when his dead cap is only 3 mill vs taking on the 17 mill cap hit

Josh McDaniels saw this with Cutler a long time ago and was vilified for it. But I don't think too many people wouldn't say at this point that he was right.

Cutler is a serviceable NFL starter, but that's about it. Big arm, small heart.

An excellent observation GP. I know Josh failed in Denver, but if NE wins the SB, he will get a second shot at running a franchise's football operations & flourish this time I think.

I actually thought McDaniels did okay in Denver considering that QB Kyle Orton is decent not great. He beat Bill Belichick in those god awful throwback Broncos jerseys too.

Cutler will never be successful in this league. He's soft...Doesn't understand leadership, doesn't have the right attitude, doesn't have killer instinct...The list goes on...

Jay's not soft because under OC Mike Tice in Chicago that o-line was pathetic & Cutler took a ton of sacks & vicious hits. But, I agree with you 100% that Jay's leadership skills are non existent & he doesn't inspire anybody to play better around him like Manning does, Luck does, Brady does, or Rogers does TCC.

Exactly. He doesn't inspire the people around him. His body language conveys all the wrong messages. He'd rather sit and sulk than actually step to the plate and make things happen. The instinct isn't there, period. And, it was evident going back to 2005 or whenever he entered the league. There have been many with talent and a great arm, but the size of the fight in the dog is all that matters.

You make a lot of sense...but 4 coaches have tried to find Jay's path to success...

and he has been an underachiever for 8 years...

..when the Bears were dominant defensively, Jay didn't win because he didn't have enough weapons..

///when they got him a strong set of WERs and backs...he cant do it because he's always behind..

//When you step back fro it..its amazing that the Bears have him that superbucks deal.

He has no playoff success whatsoever,

You cant get max bucks for that. but I think they almost have to keep him due to that deal

The whole team stinks on both side but Cutler is the highest paid offensive player in the NFL and that strengthen the case for the entire country to step back and examine the outrageous salaries pain in pro sports. Look at baseball if you really want to flip out. It is no different than slipping on a wet floor and get a 100,000,000 even though there is no proof of injury. Lawyers destroy everything they touch except their bank books.

If he's on the roster in March of 2015, $10m of his 2016 salary becomes guaranteed. So if they release him after the 2015 season, the cap penalty is $13m, not $3m. That $10m staggered guarantee is the primary reason they appear to be ready to make a move prior to March of 2015.

I read through the contract and it's for sure as you're saying. He will not be a Chicago Bear past the 3rd day of the start 2015 league year. Otherwise , they are on the hook for 10 mill in 2016. Looks to me like they can't trade him and have to just release him. Here's something I found in Roto world that gives another scenario. I don't think this is too likely and I even think they have his guaranteed money wrong. I believe it's as we read it 15.5 now and the other 10 mill in march.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports several unnamed NFL executives believe the Bears may have to give up a draft pick in order to trade Jay Cutler.

Still owed a guaranteed $25.5 million on the seven-year deal signed last offseason, Cutler's contract appears to be trade prohibitive. Schefter's sources believe the Bears could offset the big guarantees by offering Cutler AND a draft pick to prospective trade partners. NFL rules dictate the Bears would have to receive some compensation in return, but Chicago could get around the rule by accepted a late-round pick in exchange for Cutler and a better pick. It would be a high price to pay to offload a talented quarterback, but with coach Marc Trestman likely finished after the season, Chicago may simply press the reset button.

Yeah, looks like they're assuming what the guaranteed money would be if he's not released by March.

And the trade scenario is way outside of reality. No one is going to trade for that contract and commit themselves to $25.5m to Jay Cutler over the next two seasons.

I think he's toast. Once I realized that benching him protects them from the injury guarantee in 2016, it became even more obvious than before.

Yeah .. my take is Adam Sceffer has some really good stuff he's smoking and I'd love to know who these " several unnamed NFL executives are ?" Must be the same ones that said it made all the sense in the world for the Colts to keep Peyton Manning and draft Andrew Luck.

I just re-read the blurb. The executives are reportedly saying that if the Bears want to trade Cutler, they'd have to include a draft pick in order to sweeten the pot. He's not saying anyone thinks the Bears can get a draft pick for Cutler, straight up. There'd have to be a pick swap, and the Bears would be giving up the best pick and the player, in exchange for someone else assuming the guarantees on his contract.

In other words, Cutler's not going to be traded.

If you're going to mock every NFL Insider who passes along something that winds up being false, or untrue,  or incorrect -- whatever words you want to use --  then there will be exactly no one who you can trust or count on for anything.

No one is right 100% of the time.    Not in anything.    And discounting someone like Shefter simply because he passed along someone's view about Peyton and Andrew isn't going to get you anywhere.....

I don't see any upside, but I see plenty of downside....

Your view may be different.

Honestly,  I was stunned when I heard this....  I wasn't expecting it from Cutler.   Props to him for saying something so mature and wise.

I hope this mess gets worked out for everyone's satisfaction....

Right .. I understood that but still is insane that he could be traded with that 26 mill guaranteed. Like you said , he's not going to be traded and it's crazy for anyone to even suggest that it would get done with a draft pick included.

My view would be that this is just a forum and I'm thinking my "mocking him" really means zip.. nada or nothing. Also I'm not trying to "get anywhere"... whatever you mean by that. All I'm saying is something like I said way back when the talking heads mentioned Luck and Manning on the same team. Its not realistic and lacks sound reasoning and judgement. I would love to know who these "multiple NFL executives " that somehow came up with this cockamamie idea are. Either Roto world author is embellishing a bit or like I said he's nuts. If you find it insulting that I'm questioning what I think is a ridiculous report .. ehhh .. I suggest either live with it or put me on ignore.

jay hasn't always underachieved. He has had some solid seasons. He isn't an elite qb so people that pay him like on or expect that....yep subpar seasons but knowing what he is capable of he is having a very poor season but those thinking his career is a disappointment just aren't being realistic with the kid. They expect too much. He isn't being used right nor is he playing well. You have to save the kid from himself. Let him throw 45 times a game and u might as well count on two picks. He isn't a volume passer. Look at his career stats. He is completely consistent. He has an avg passer rating and is an avg qb with spectacular arm. How about Chicago run the ball. All their backs avg over 4 yds per carry and quit asking jay to push it down the field. Utilize those big bodied receivers on crossing routes and over the middle. Jay isn't a really good qb but he has some spectacular arm and coaches fall in love with it and think it's the answer but it's not. It's a train wreck. If he would find himself on a team that runs first and keeps the concepts simple I think he would be acceptable starter.

I didn't say anything about finding it insulting.   Not at all.    It just doesn't further the argument -- that's my meaning about doesn't get us anywhere.

As to the NFL execs,  I'd say Irsay was one.   For a while,  he floated the concept of keeping Manning and drafting Luck.

That's probably the root of other NFL execs saying that......

I heard him say something like that. I don't know exactly what he said, or if there's another segment, but I did get the impression that he'd rather re-do his contract in order to stay with the Bears.

Two problems arise:

1) It's never been done. While many players have restructured their contracts, and some have even taken pay cuts (not a moving around of money, but an actual pay cut), no player has ever surrendered guaranteed money. If the issue really came down to nothing more than the staggered guarantee in 2016, I could maybe see Cutler agreeing to remove the early trigger, but he and his agent would probably still insist that the money be guaranteed for injury. Either way, it's something that never has happened.

2) There's still the issue of Jay Cutler not being very good for the past year. While I think this situation is being dictated largely by his contract mechanics and his overall pay, he also hasn't been very effective. I feel like Trestman is done, and Emery will at least be on the hot seat. I don't think Emery or anyone else -- a new coach, or even a new GM -- will want to hitch their fortunes to Jay Cutler in any way. There's already a tortured relationship between the Bears and Cutler. As long as he's there, I can't imagine anyone having any job security.
