Could be they're waving the flag for this year and just want to cut cap and get younger.  I'm not sure if he has anything left, you usually don't get faster as you get older.

If he was cut there is a reason. As far as the cap hit I don't think the Titans can not pay him for the rest of his contract this season. I am not too sure about when a team is not obligated to pay the player.

His pay is guaranteed, but if another team claims him off waivers, they pay him, not the Titans.

 

And if he clears waivers, but another team signs him, his guaranteed money gets offset, and the Titans only pay the difference between what he gets from the new team and what they would have been paying him. 

 

Either way, he doesn't have a big contract, so this isn't about the cap. The Titans would save a few hundred thousand, at best, this season, and they are more than $10m under the cap this year. They can save $2m or so next year, but they didn't have to release him now to save that money; that could have been done after the season. 

 

They probably wanted to bench him and play the younger guys, and he asked to be waived instead. Either that, or they don't think he's good enough to do anything for them this season, or next. Could be a combination.

Well, he has two sacks while being the general 3rd option pass rusher, so it isn't like he can't get to the QB occasionally. I'd support it if we picked him up. If not, oh well I guess.

If Walden got hurt, I'd be all for it. But Phillips would just take away snaps from Newsome, who is more explosive than Philips already, and just like the Titans, we need to develop our young guys.

 

Ironically, I wanted us to sign Phillips the past two offseasons.
