Grigson Appreciation

I know this subject has been covered.  But I so much appreciate Ryan Grigson and what he has done.  Losing Bill Polian was going to be very, very hard to replace.  More often then not, you strike out.  But you can really tell that Grigson is firmly rooted in scouting college players.  Not just by our draft picks, but college free agents.

- Harrison  ©  He certainly possesses all the traits and smarts to be a good NFL center.  I love his run blocking ability, which we have not had in a long time. Saturday, towards the end of his career, was getting pushed back far too much.

- Zack Kerr (DL) I love this guys motor, size, and speed.  And he looks like his arms are 8 feet long. It is always very hard for rookie DLineman to make an impact.  So for him to be performing at the level of some high draft picks is very promising.

- Purifoy (CB)  Hasn't had a chance to play much, but he appears to have great potential and size.  I think he will be a good #4 if not more.

- Swoope (TE) I know this is a reach, but I have a feeling this guy is going to be another very good NFL TE who played basketball.  The reason being is he is so smart, so dedicated, and from all reports, just picks things up so fast.  I think he will actually replace Fleener or Allen as they won't be resigned.

- Dewey McDonald (S)  Again, hard to project with such limited game experience, but he seems like a guy with great speed, size, and striking ability.

Ok, then what he has done with the draft.  Not only perfect, but how do Mewhort and Thornton look now?  Key parts of our offense for years to come.

And the NFL\CFL free agents he has brought in I think, for the most part, have been very solid.  Sure, guys like LaRon Landry haven't lived up to expectations.  But nobody is perfect.  And coming from a guy who has said he prefers building through the draft, he did a good job of building a team to win right away while he slowly has his young guys take over many of those spots.

Finally, the offense and defensive structure. I know much of that has to do with Pagano.  But Grigson hired Pagano and gets all the players for him. How many times have I heard that running the ball and stopping the run is a waste of time and it 20 year old strategy.  Well, how does it look now?  I would argue that use stopping the run so well is a BIG reason why teams are failing so often on 3rd down against us.  It is often 3rd and long.  And our running attack has really opened things up for Luck.

So I am very, very pleased with what Grigson has done.  I do think you will see guys like Walden being replaced with draft choices.  Nothing against Walden, but I don't think he was brought in to be a long term starter.

So, Grigson gets credit for bringing in guys that haven't done anything in the NFL yet?  I would say every GM in the league does that on a regular basis.  I mean Harrison and Kerr seem to be good finds and are getting playing time as rookies but to say Grigson is great GM because he brought in a CB that only plays special teams, a TE on the practice squad and a no name safety (literally according to your post) is a bit of a stretch.

Additionally, while I like some of his draft picks it hard to call them perfect, when 7 of his 17 picks from 2012 and 2013 are are not even on the team and an 8th is a healthy scratch every week.

Grigson has done well and I'm glad Irsay hired him as the GM but some of the posters on here act like he eats hay and craps gold.

Grigs has done an incredible job of building around his franchise quarterback and creating success after the 2-14 season. Many talk about his 2012 draft as his only success but his other drafts are looking good as well. As long as the Colts are perennial playoff and super bowl contenders, there shouldn't be any fire Grigson threads.

You do realize that the 7 who are not on the team are all 6th and 7th round draft picks.    And two of them, Brazil and Boyett, it's their own damn fault.

There are a number of things to criticize Grigson for,  but I don't think draft picks is a legitimate one....

Grigson has us in IMO great shape with Many young players to develope. I suggest as good as ANY Team out there.

Really, like ANY player, Walden was brought here to be as good as he can be and earn his spot. I hope Newsome becomes as good and challenges him, but Walden is Earning his $$$ lately.

Because of his Blocking, Allen ain`t going anywhere i would bet.

When you draft guys with character concerns, and they turn out to have character concerns in the NFL, that's on you as well.

Sure.    But it depends on what round you take guys with character concerns.    So, investing a 6 in Brazil or Boyett is not a worry when they don't pan out as most 6th or 7th round picks don't pan out.

In other words,  it's worth the gamble.    Using a high pick on a guy with character issues is more risky.....

Obviously. But you don't just get a free pass on a guy having messing up just because you got him late in the draft. Late draft picks are still valuable.

Not as valuable as higher picks.....   that's why teams are willing to take a flier on a late round pick.    If it works,  it's all upside....  if it doesn't,  you only lost a late round pick.

Really?  Wow, well that changes everything.

Of course, I wasn't criticizing Grigson for the draft picks just offering facts as to why his drafts have not been perfect.

I'll let you guys discuss the Grigson dilemma.

I just wanted to chime in that I really hope they get a chance to bring up Swoope at the end of the season.  From what I saw in the preseason it looks like the kid can play.  I know it comes down to - can be block at least as good as Coby.

So Allen's saving grace is his blocking? The guy's a beast in every aspect of his game.

Interesting.  But I never said Grigson was great.  And on every player, I said from what I have seen, the player potentially could be good.   I would much rather be in that position like the Raiders who don't have that many even potentially good players.

Remember, everything is speculation on these boards.

Speaking of Boyett, he got arrested again:

@PostBroncos: Police: Ex #Broncos S John Boyett punched cabbie, urged cops to call Elway: http://t.co/RgfmaF3pum by @JesseAPaul http://t.co/ysxAlDxa0s

Edit:

And Broncos just released him:

Wow. What a head case. I hope the young man gets his life in order.

He has. I just finished Ben Gundy's analysis on Colts Academy. He points out how much Coby has improved since the Jax game.

I don't know enough about Swoope to say anything about his blocking. I did like the way he moved off the line thogh, he seemed very fluid.

My concern about Swoope is that sometime around late November/early December some team that is clearly out of the playoff hunt and is going to get a top-10 pick in the '15 draft is going to start sniffing around rosters.    I'm concerned that some team is going to snatch him off our practice squad and put Swoope on their 53.

I'd hate to lose Swoope that way......   I think the kid has quite a future....

I get why people say Fleener won't or shouldn't be resigned, but why wouldn't Allen? He's improving every game and he's playing an important part in run blocking. Allen actually considers blocking an integral part of his game. I'm not sure that the same can be said for all these converted basketball players/wide receiver hybrids/Jimmy Graham types.

I'm not saying that Swoope can't develop into something but I reject the idea of not holding onto a good player who's already producing.

I appreciate what Grigson has brought to the franchise, and don't mind his minor hiccups on late round picks. You never know when you'll get the next Burfict. I like how Irsay has entrusted him with so much power and he is responding. Dare I say he is more like Bill than Chris.

My only complaint has been the offensive line. Not anymore. Because we have a very effective young unit to grow with Luck this helps assure his longevity.

I will say Fleener is improving in all facets, he just needs to become a more violent runner before and after the catch. It is easy to dismiss him because we have Allen. I think we're bound to see a lot more of Allen and Fleener in two TE sets if Reggie misses time.

It's only a matter of time until Grigson receives GM of the Year.

Agreed. I rewatched about the first half of the Bengals game last night and was focusing on fleener when he was asked to block. I saw him whiff on one block, which was on a play that went to the other side of the formation.

Other than that, fleener completely took the RDE (Geathers I believe) of the play on a sweep to the offensive left side. A few plays later he was the lead blocker through the middle and he drove burfict to the ground. He also had a nice block on #51 taking him out of a run play, plus several nice blocks on DBs. And that's just off the top of my head.

If that happens I'm relatively sure the colts get first opportunity to promote swoope to their active roster instead of losing him. Of course they would have to cut someone to make room for him but if they think he's worth it then they'll find a way to make room
